To get a search warrant issued you need evidence that a crime occurred. A person disappearing after a car crash is not by itself evidence of a crime. Especially since LE has said publicly that it was a single vehicle crash and they have no evidence of anyone else being involved. So getting search warrants may be difficult in this case. It's often an obstacle in missing persons cases.Indeed.
One would imagine that even a skimpy investigation would have prioritised that basic requirement.
Hard to imagine how an investigation could be carried out without it.
Then again, it's not the first shock I received on this journey.
(ETA type)
And a geofence warrant is a particularly broad type of warrant. So broad that some courts have been finding them unconstitutional recently. So I would actually be surprised if they'd gotten one.
And to answer someone else's question, no the PI can't apply for a search warrant themselves. LE has to do it.
