Expert: Ex-Balch Springs officer not justified in killing teen Jordan Edwards

The shooting of teenager Jordan Edwards in April 2017 by a then-Balch Springs police officer was not justified, a former federal agent said Tuesday.

Philip Hayden, an expert on the use of force, also testified that a properly trained law enforcement officer would not have opened fire in the same situation.

In a fourth day of the murder trial of a former police officer, the jury began to hear testimony early Tuesday afternoon.

Roy Oliver, a former Balch Springs police officer, is on trial for the murder of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards. He’s also facing two counts of aggravated assault.

Tuesday, jurors were shown new dash camera and body camera footage from other responding officers at the scene. In the footage played in court, one of the teens in the car with Edwards can be heard crying and asking why an officer opened fire on them.

“He’s only a freshman at Mesquite High School, sir. Why did he shoot?”
