GUILTY TX - Kala Golden-Schuchardt, 28, Spring, 17 April 2012

An article in today's paper, submitted by Associated Press, said that the way Kala's husband found out about the incident is Kala had a witness on the scene call him and tell him what happened. How awful is this?!

As far as I can tell she didn't call LE. LE were there already there investigating when she showed up and started to talk to them (appearing willing to help).

"When police showed up at the complex, Verna McClain approached them and appeared willing to help. During questioning, however, her story began to unravel. She finally began to disclose her role and revealed the whereabouts of the baby, officers say. Previous reports of an accomplice in the kidnapping and shooting appear to be unfounded, detectives said, though the incident remains under investigation."

When the DA was in the media last night/yesterday, seems he mentioned that some members of Verna's family spoke to police at the complex. Anyone else hear about this?

I still can't believe CPS didn't give the kids back to the father.
The two of them were legally married. Now the guy lost his wife and doesn't have his kids either, even though he isn't accused of any wrongdoing.

This makes me so angry. Sure, let's give Josh Powell his kids back, when all evidence points to him killing their mother! But no, this man, who has only prior drug offenses, nope no can do. So freaking angry. I can't even say what I want because it will get me a time out. :maddening:

Judge Fred Edwards presiding over the 9th District Court in Montgomery County has denied bond for Varna McClain on her Capital Murder charge. He appointed two court appointed attorney’s for her defense who will review the case between now and Monday.
On Monday another bond hearing will be held to determine if she should be afforded a bond.

She works for a Harris County staffing agency that hires nurses. McClain works as a home care nurse, specializing in pediatric care.

I have always been one to point this out. There are generally at least two families destroyed in these cases.

When you have a loved one murdered it is horrible.
Imagining what they went through. How they suffered. What their last thoughts were. Trying to comprehend it. Accept it.

When your loved one murders someone... it is horrible.
Trying to understand how this person YOU love could do this to someone else. Wondering if you missed any signs. Disbelief.

When you have a loved one murdered you have a ton of support.
Law enforcement, family, friends, neighbors, the media, people online. They talk about how wonderful your victim loved one was.

When your loved one murders someone you have very little, if any support.
Often guilt by association. Often blamed for the suspects actions. Listening to people call your murdering loved one a monster.

I like it when the suspect's family and the victim's family are able to see each others pain... and are able to be civil. :twocents:

When Judge Edwards asked the defendant about her assets, Ms McClain said she didn't own a house or vehicle but was employed; so who owns the vehicle she was driving?

I still can't believe she acted alone, imo

If Ms McClain doesn't own a vehicle, I wonder if she has a valid driver's license?

And where did she get the gun? Do guns need to be registered in the State of Texas?

I agree with you that 2 families are destroyed. Let's hope the accused murderer's family continues to be civil towards the victim and her family and help seek justice. Won't hold my breath though. I've seen too many cases where the family in an effort to protect their family member will lie and cover up.

Hope that won't be the case here. Starting with: She's not mentally ill. IMO

I don't think she acted alone when it comes to car and gun. Don't want to be speculating. I wonder if Verna McClain was part of some conspiracy by someone else.

Defense attorneys said they plan to ask the judge to set bond for their client on Monday.

"It is our position that she is entitled to a reasonable bond. She does not have a great deal of assets. If the state wants to hold our client on a no-bond, they have a great burden that they will have to satisfy for the court on Monday," Bond said. "It’s our hope on Monday that a bond is set reasonably, so Miss McClain will be allowed to return home and tend to her children."

Bond said McClain was being held on suicide watch, and described her demeanor as "very upset."

McClain, whose hands and feet were cuffed when she entered the hearing, spoke softly when questioned by the judge and kept her eyes cast downward as she walked slowly out of the courtroom.

She told the judge she does not own a house or a car and has no savings, and said she understood she was charged with capital murder.

"Today, she seemed to be very upset, somewhat confused about the proceedings that were going on and mumbling. So she’s very upset," Bond said.

Bond said McClain’s mental state at the time of the shooting could be the focal point of their whole case.

Though Bond said he believes the case meets the requirements for a capital murder charge, he does not believe it will be appropriate for the death penalty, because it will be difficult to prove that his client would be a future danger to society.

Bond said as far as he knows now, McClain has no prior criminal record.

Defense attorney already setting the groundwork for an insanity defense?

"It will take a while ... for her to have an appreciation for what the situation is, if she ever does appreciate it," defense attorney E. Tay Bond said after the brief court hearing.

oh i'm sure! and while i'm sure her nerves are just totally shot, part of me has to wonder how much of the way she was "acting" in court was just that... an act. i'd probably be playing the same part if i was in her shoes!

This is a little off topic, but why is it in news reports I am reading about this case they are retracting "murdered" to "killed" when speaking about Keegans late mother?

Aren't those the same thing?

And secondly, this has to be the strangest case I have heard of in a long while. Can "insanity" be used here in terms of defense? And, do nurses ever undergo mental evaluations in their line of work?

BRETT LIGON, Montgomery County District Attorney, who appeared on Nancy Grace's Show last night said the plates on the blue Lexus found at the apartment complex lead to that physical address.

Verna told the Judge she didn't own a vehicle but Clark Goldband, NG's producter said last night that Verna stated on her dating site that she has a car.

Most home care nurses require a vehicle.

I've been an RN for 26 years and have never been mentally evaluated. I don't think it exists. When renewing our license every year we have to answer questions relative to mental stability.
