This is a little off topic, but why is it in news reports I am reading about this case they are retracting "murdered" to "killed" when speaking about Keegans late mother?

Aren't those the same thing?

And secondly, this has to be the strangest case I have heard of in a long while. Can "insanity" be used here in terms of defense? And, do nurses ever undergo mental evaluations in their line of work?

"Killed" is not necessarily equal to "Murdered". Think of George Zimmerman. We know he committed homicide (killed). But we don't know if he committed murder. Homicide is the killing of another human being, but you have to figure out if it was carried out with intent or was in self defense for example.

Where I live, Nurses do not undergo a mental evaluation unless they have been charged with a serious crime and then the Judge or their lawyer will request it.

Nurses only require a clear criminal record, a diploma/degree and references. Their licenses can be suspended or revoked if there is just cause and in that case, they are ordered to appear before a disciplinary committee which regulates their affairs.

Defence lawyers Darryl Cohen and Mickey Sherman who appeared on NG last night believe the defendant is insane and Greg Kading, former LAPD Detective & author of "Murder Rap" said "Well, I think there`s going to be a distinction between whether she is insane or whether that will simply be her defense. I think that her defense attorneys will give her that defense because it`s the only one that they can practically apply in the situation, like you said.

She is caught red handed. The evidence is overwhelming. Insanity is the only way she can go. Whether or not it`s true or not is a different matter."

Yes, insanity can be used as a defense in TX. Remember Andrea Yates?

http://www.khou.com/home/McClains-g...gun-after-burglary-at-her-home-148176745.html

"The grandmother of Verna McClain, the woman accused of killing a young mother and kidnapping her baby, says McClain recently bought a gun."

http://www.khou.com/home/Father-of-...ard-to-reuniting-with-children-148188735.html

"All of them [the children] are staying with a nearby relative and Schuchardt has 24-hour access. Child Protective Services officials said he can even move in with them until the situation is resolved." They are waiting for his urinalysis to clear, possibly Monday.

Thanks! Also from that link:

In addition to baby Keegan, he and wife Kala Golden had a 2-year-old son, and she had a third child through a previous relationship. All of them are staying with a nearby relative and Schuchardt has 24-hour

Wonder what will happen to that 3rd child. Anyone heard if the father of that child has spoken with the media?

Still think CPS is being ridiculous. Keep trying to spin it, CPS. When it boils down to it, you're still holding this man's children hostage.

how can the grandma say she bought a gun for protection but didn't know about it until the shooting?

Maybe someone told her, after the crime, that Verna had bought the gun for protection? I don't know. I'd be curious to know if there really ever was a break-in on her apt. and car. Maybe she just bought the gun as part of her plan to grab a baby and used "protection" as an excuse. Maybe there isn't even a fiance. Maybe she never even had any miscarriages. I am very skeptical of anything she claims. :moo:

I haven't heard anything about the father of the oldest child.

I think it's very odd that they're checking into the father so thoroughly. I thought CPS couldn't do anything unless there was clear evidence of abuse. I don't condone marijuana use, but it just surprises me that they are being such sticklers about this when they often give kids back to all kinds of obviously horrible parents. Double :moo:

wow,she looks like an old frail woman, hard to imagine that's the same person as in those overly revealing pictures from the dating website.....wth happened to her?It always blows my mind to begin to imagine what went through someone's head to get to that point...it's completely beyond my understanding.....
What happened to her?
No make up and hair is not done.

I want to see and hear from the bf/fiance. Piece of work.....I'm sure. IF this (her) story is true, imo, she does have mental health issues...and the family has known about it for years. Maybe "helping" her as far as employment, kids, place to live, etc....but otherwise not taking care or facing the real problem. The mother said she graduated HS at 15 and then went to nursing school. Maybe so, but she also began having children shortly after too,...and continued. She needed a baby to make sure she could hold on to the bf for her own financial security. She didn't even have a car. So many things are still not adding up

Just who was she living with, whose car was she driving, and WHERE is the media in reporting about the bf? Afterall, he was the reason VM gave for doing this.
JMO

eta: Her family certainly hasn't said much about the bf.........??

Good article that describes how the baby was found. Also this case clearly illustrates how wrong the witnesses can be in their descriptions. But despite all these problems witnesses did get right that the car was a "Lexus" which eventually led to finding the baby.

"Verna McClain walked up to detectives, saying she had information about the Lexus, which was registered to her sister, Corina Jackson, who lived in apartment No. 68."
