MISTRIAL TX - Nine dead, 20 injured in shootout at Waco bikers' meeting, 17 May 2015

I'm still in the process of waking up, but I think I just now heard on nbcdfw.com that there are so many people in the Waco jail that some are being transported up here to the Tarrant Co. jail. I can't find a link yet so this is what I think I heard. Deputydawg, can you confirm this?.........or are you not allowed to either confirm or deny.

Well, here I am working in Waco today (I live in a rural town just outside of Waco, and work in Waco).
Crazy.

I'm glad the nation is getting to see Sgt. Swanton. He's a great asset for Waco PD.

I think Twin Peaks is going to have a short future here in Waco, whether because their franchise agreement is going to be pulled, or because of the backlash from the local community.

Please pray for our LE today and in the near future, for they are getting numerous threats from these t h u g s (see, I use that word as a descriptor for low life/criminal actions, not a race!)...

192 being processed in our facilities...good job Central Texas.

(P.S. I feel for the "good" biker groups that do a lot of good work...even they were alerted to get off their bikes yesterday because there were threats against anyone riding yesterday, from the criminal gangs.)

The section of the outdoor mall closest to I-35 and Hwy 6 is still going to be closed today, for crime scene investigation and security. That hurts other innocent businesses and employees. Sad that a bunch of t h u g s can affect so many others.

Good post. Thanks for the local insight.
Stay Safe.

I read about this and it is amazing how many bikers were there. Anytime you have rival gangs showing up at same place then something could happen.

I can understand places wanting to be biker friendly but this is ridiculous. It was like a convention for rival gangs to show up and settle differences or something.

It seems there has to be more to this story of how they all knew to show up there together. Something was going on as far as planning and I hope investigators find out what the story was behind this.

I just dont see it as random bunch of bikers showing up on that day. It seems there was some kind of purpose to it. I dont necessarily think it was planned to show up to brawl but it sure seems like it was planned to meet there for some purpose.

No matter what the purpose, it was a very bad idea to have rival gangs under the same roof.
Something seems really strange about this.

Even a Walmart in town completely closed late afternoon, as did several restaurants near the interstate...and even a small shop owned by someone I know. They had alerts all over social media yesterday, with local LE asking people to just go home. I've never seen such a response city-wide. And yes, by reading social media, it appeared many were taking that advice.

Hope you're in a safe place DD, good seeing you out here and thanks for the report.

That is one of the sad parts about this story. Honest people hard working people are being affected and losing money.

Even the long term impact could be affected. For example it may affect peoples travel plans. Some people may avoid the area entirely during their summer travel plans when they may have wanted to visit Waco on way to or from the beach before this happened.
I am sure people sometimes would pass through Waco on their travels to and from the beaches like Galveston and Corpus Christi. Some people like taking side trips to see the different cities when traveling and now people may avoid the whole town through the summer.

The LE is doing very good by acting quickly on this. Hopefully the long term impact will not be too severe. Congrats to LE for acting so quickly and properly.

Good post, Hatfield.

I'm also waiting to hear more of the intel that was known leading up to this. I'm sure more will be leaking out in the days and weeks to come.

They showed a re-run on Channel 10 this morning (KWTX) of an interview with Sgt. Swanton, dated May 7th, where he was talking about this biker gang issue brewing. The local DA (for as pro-LE as I am, I am not a fan of this DA, for historical reasons which I can't divulge), is also on record as saying he knew this was a problem.

My understanding at this point, is that Twin Peaks had been hosting several Thursday night "Biker Nights" or similar name. These were known, through some LE intel, as being used as recruiting for these biker gangs. These concerns were being brought up to the local mgmt, to no avail. There was an event promoted for yesterday there, and that's why these different groups were coming to the restaurant. Rivals, geez. Not wise.

My agency was about the only one not involved yesterday, but we're obviously in great contact with those that were. I'm just as anxious as others to hear more of what was leading up to this. It'll be interesting, I am sure.

Oh, one other comment - Twin Peaks is pretty new to the Central Texas Marketplace - don't quote me on this as a fact, but I think they opened last fall???? Certainly less than a year. Like I said, I don't know that they are going to survive this. Neat looking building, maybe empty soon. JMO, of course.

Thanks, Peli.

I was at a neighborhood shindig yesterday when the news broke. My neighbors wondered if I'd be called into work. Nope, I think we were the only fed LE not involved. I know FBI and ATF were called in, obviously. And, Mr DD (Waco Fire Dept) was off yesterday, so he didn't have to work it, either.

I am soooo thankful no LE was injured or killed. We are all so close here in this area.

Hi faw! Long time no "talk" lol

No, I haven't heard anything about that. I must admit I'm not sure how they're going to hold 192! I know they took about 100 on city transit buses (LOL! But good thinking on their part, to utilize that) down to the convention center to do their interrogations/interviews.

Our jail, like pretty much anywhere else in this nation, doesn't have additional space for 192 all of a sudden. I know EMS services and LE support came from neighboring cities and counties...I would expect they'd try to house overflow closer to McLennan County than going to Tarrant...but I'll listen for any update on that for you.

Crazy.

LOL, oh yeah...darn it all, Waco never makes the news for anything good, ya know?!?!?! We were all doing the community collective sigh, of ..."oh geez, WACKO again!"

That could explain it. If the rival gangs were basically competing for recruits then it was a recipe for disaster. Maybe this special weekend event at the place brought out more numbers than usual too.

Just glad to hear LE and most public is safe. It could have been so much worse. I think LE is doing a great job and doing their best to get this under control.

Whenever I hear of gang incidents such as this, the first thing that comes to mind is the Rolling Stones Concert "Gimme Shelter" that hired the Hells Angels for their security at a concert. It turned into a disaster and was frightening to watch a documentary I saw about it. Linked below is a little information about it. It was a different time and different situation but it just reminds me of that for some reason when I hear of gang incidents.

Okay, some local LE scoop:

I talked to someone who volunteered to go in and help with the processing of those taken to the convention center for processing and interviews.
He said there were about a dozen illegals that were also involved, several had warrants for other crimes and were arrested for those.
He said he has never witnessed such a mass arrest of so many at one time...he said it was unreal to see all backpacks, shoes and personal belongings laid out on the tables/floors in several convention sized rooms. They'd take 4 off the transit bus at a time, process them and then have LE interviews.

He said the second jail in town, was also going to take many/most of those being held.

His opinion - it's going to be a challenge to find out who in this crowd were actual shooters. And, his opinion is SWAT is responsible for some of the deaths. No kidding, that's not surprising, but it will be interesting to hear how many of the 9.

So that's the report I have from someone who was downtown at the convention center last night.

ETA: One of my coworkers just got in the office. He said the corner of the highway that connects I-35 to Hwy 6 is still completely closed. More for security, apparently. They don't want shots fired by drive-bys in case of retaliation from these bikers coming for retaliation, and the threats to the LE officers they've made, knowing there is a large presence still working the crime scene.

I still haven't found a link but will keep looking. Perhaps when I thought I heard that I hadn't had enough coffee. The only reason I can think of for possibly bringing them to Tarrant Co. is that most of the towns nearer to Waco are smaller. If they were housed in a jail in a smaller town more bikers might come in & start another wild west shoot-out. I know for sure that the Bandido gang is extremely dangerous.

DD, are Texas Rangers involved in this?

Yes, Tarrant Co. would be set up to handle a large scale situation.

Yes, I was told the Rangers were on scene yesterday.

INS, as well.

The Twin Peaks Waco facebook page is gone.

And I heard on the news that they just lost their franchise liscense.

http://www.kwtx.com/home/headlines/Waco-Shooting-Near-Twin-Peaks-In-Waco-304043711.html

Thanks! Well, that was quick that they pulled their page, LOL

I was reading it last night. Let's just say the comments were not nice.

Have they lost their franchisee license for good? Wow. It was sounding that corporate was not pleased with the local guy, Jay Patel (IIRC) is his name.
When you have Sgt. Swanton NOT mincing words and hitting back at Patel's statement from yesterday, saying it's all a fabrication, I guess corporate can't have much faith in his franchisee, eh?

A few citizens are now starting the "how many did the SWAT team kill? All of them? It was a planned set-up so gun happy LE could kill bikers" postings :)
It was bound to happen.

If they have not shut this place down for good then they should.

All I heard is that this particular location lost it's franchise.
