Ok so this begs the question how do we prevent LEO from being assaulted and killed by those with mental illness? Not all answers are as simple as some think.

Better communication between dispatchers and officers and more training on dealing with people with mental health issues would be a start. IMO

Imo, he didn't like Sandra standing up for her rights.

That is debatable. What's not debatable is she was combative. That never ends well when dealing with LEO. While everyone is focused on his behavior and placing blame on him I find it curious not many question her behavior.

In no way do I condone LEO misconduct but it must be said that there is a right way and a wrong way to respond if you feel you are being mistreated.

The answer is with the proper training.

No not really. There is no training that adequately deals with handling mentally ill perps. It's just too unpredictable. I certainly don't envy those that have to deal with it day in, day out.

Ok, let's say that a LEO took you away from his dashcam and sexually assaulted you, with no witness around. What sort of responses do you consider appropriate? (I'm not suggesting that the LEO in this case assaulted SB, but you were discussing general ways to respond to LEOs.)

Well, marijuana is still illegal in all states, because it is illegal federally still. Regardless of states jumping ahead and declaring legality by state, the federal law overrules. Not to mention that any legal marijuana in the future will be controlled production and medicinal use only. Marijuana can possibility detected in blood tests and urine for up to 20 days or more after use, but one report implied her levels were not just traces, which would indicate recent use, and of course if it was in her system, then it would affect her behavior. Marijuana can increase heart rate nearly twice of normal, cause low blood pressure and liver problems. It is also linked to mental health issues such as depression, paranoia, suicidal thoughts, and anxiety. Marijuana significantly impairs judgment, reaction time, and muscle coordination. The heavier the use, the greater the risk of these conditions, and with someone who is already mentally ill, it would exacerbate those conditions. It is the number one illegal drug found in the blood of drivers involved in accidents, and studies show it doubles the risk of accident. It is illegal, in all 50 states, to drive under the influence of marijuana, which means any at all. So the limits are that it is not allowed at all, and completely illegal. And, I'm guessing that many people are proud of the fact they smoke this weed, but there are real reasons to not.;-)

Are you saying no one on WS has ever intentionally attempted to get a thread shut down? People? I said someONE.
I know it has happened, on a thread last summer but we were able to keep it open in spite of that.

I don't think it's right for police officers to go around shooting unarmed citizens who are mentally ill and I don't think we should just shrug our shoulders and let it continue. Training will help them deal with and be better prepared for these situations. It might not prevent every single tragedy but it would make a difference.

It appears that he took her to the sidewalk to get her out of the road. She was pretty much out of control, and there was traffic going by them. The last thing he would want was for a driver to wind up in the middle of traffic because she was upset.

I don't know if you know any LE at all, but if so, please feel free to ask them if they'd rather be dealing with people who had been smoking pot or people who had been drinking alcohol.

Straw man. Who thinks what you stated is ok? Are you saying those defending LEO think it's ok for them to gun down people with impunity ? There is a middle ground that needs to be met but will never do so as long as the mentality is us against them.

Thanks so many tragic stories when LE feel the only response is to shoot. I know that will rile some but there it is. IMO

Sometimes it's like they don't even think or make an effort to do anything else. A kid on a street car ALONE and with a knife gets shot eight times and then tasered? What kind of response is that?

Because she wasn't getting medicine if needed?
And they knew her background of being an activist for justice. They knew there would be hell to pay if she died of anything but at her own hand.
Just throwing that out there as I'm not sure what to think about the circumstances of her death.

Having never been arrested or in jail, I can only assume that they would get the inmates their needed medications if they didn't have someone to bring them to the jail. We know they have a nurse there, as she was called per the Autopsy Report.

I know in the hospital they bring meds in a little cup like seen on the table in this CNN video. I was thinking that may have been her medication, but unknown. One story indicates she moved there because of a man she was seeing, and planned to move in with him.

I think that the Mods and Tricia are smart enough to not allow one person to shut down a thread.

Multiple alerts by many members will do it. One person posting will not.

The middle ground I'm talking about is getting better training for LE. When did I say people think it's okay to gun anyone down? Getting them proper training benefits ALL sides. No us and them. It's better for LE and for citizens.
