Just wondering how a teacher is taught to respond to being physically assaulted by a student. Anyone know?

Yup. Remove yourself from the situation. Do not touch the student. Do anything to get away but never touch the student.

In our district, there are authorized and trained crisis teams in every building. They handle the situation.

Hopefully, we talk to the student identifying their feelings before it gets to that point. Affirming their frustrations.

The jail was negligent in not performing the proper timely checks. Someone should have flagged the whole "suicidal not suicidal" thing for more inquiry.

My question is what (if any) are the responsibilities of a person in jail for their own well being.

I have never been to jail. Do they give you a list of responsibilities?

Would it help if they did?

There is a really good summary (second paragraph) of the last year with LE issues.

It wont cut and paste?

CARIIS, I have read along with many threads you have posted on, and actually "thanked" quite a few, and commented on some.

All this to say, you are a to-the-point, astute, yet always kind and considerate poster.

Sorry for the slight O/T. But it needed to be acknowledged, IMO.

In theory, that sounds fine. I sincerely doubt the practice is as cut and dried.

Agreed. Only touch the children if they present harm to others or to themselves, even then, we are taught to hold them in an "embrace" and speak to them soothingly until someone can come to remove them from the environment for their own safety. Nobody threatens them with physical harm. That is just sick. :(

This would be an example of de-escalating, rather than exacerbating an incident.

So you think we just taze the kids or yank them around and scream at them? Really?

This is why teachers are so undervalued. People think we treat children the way cops treat citizens. Not so.

Lol, really. No, I don't think that, and I did not say anything of that nature. I agree that some teachers are undervalued. Just like LEOs.

Here is the series of posts. Scmom simply expressed doubt that the protocols described always work out neatly. She didn't ever say or imply that she thinks teachers taze kids, yank them around and scream at them? Where did that come from?!!!

I would like to know why she wasn't given Keppra? ( I've read that she wasn't given Keppra) Did she not have an active/valid RX? Did she refuse the med? Did the jail fail to contact the pharmacy?

Catching up, I haven't seen any of the reports since I logged off earlier, so curious if they told which meds she took there. IIRC was on the first thread, I took a ss of a little paper cup was on the table, and wondered if it was for meds (they do that in the hosp). Someone I forget who (sorry whomever it was) said that she would have to have a prescription or someone bring her meds for the Medical team to disburse to her. She didnt even have a purse with her (per her inventory of personal property) so that sounded true. OK off to see what ya found out.

I only had thirty years experience in my district . We had trainings on not touching students especially after students had died in other parts of the US. I can't speak for everyone, but I know there is no way I was going to court over some thing I did by putting hands on a student, No thank you.

And affirming someone's frustration and pain does work. Perhaps it is not that great with a psychotic student.

My friend works in a residential treatment school and they teach the kids to go to their safe spot to handle their frustration. The students there are quite severe having all kinds of issues . For instance , some have witnessed a parent murder the other parent.

I could go into the techniques used but that is a long topic. It is always about responding to the inner turmoil in positive ways.

But they do not have the most severe. Not sure how those kids are handled.

Sheriff in Sandra Bland Case Was Fired in 2008 After Racism, Brutality Allegations

Texas County’s Racial Past Is Seen as Prelude to Sandra Bland’s Death

Harris County Medical Examiner's analysis show levels of THC in Bland's bloodstream that could suggest she ingested marijuana while she was being held in the jail. A more likely scenario according to Assistant Waller County District Attorney Warren Diepraam, is that Bland ingested a very large amount of marijuana prior to her arrest by a Texas state trooper in Prairie View on July 10.
[h=1]Trooper in Sandra Bland Case Is Under Criminal Probe[/h]growing doubts over whether she was appropriately monitored before her death.

The place where the young Chicago woman was found dead in a jail cell has seen more than a century of racial violence and oppression

had at least 10 encounters herself with police in both Illinois and Texas in past years
she still owed a total of $7,579.00 in court fines resulting from five traffic stops in various Chicago suburbs (including a DUI), and she had been cited several times for her failure to pay those fines. (uninsured motor vehicle and driving with expired license plates

court found her guilty of one DUI charge, and all the other charges were dismissed-on this one LE charged her with: two counts of driving under the influence (???????????? how does that happen?) ; speeding 15-20 mph over the speed limit; improper lane usage; disobeying a traffic control signal; failing to signal when changing lanes; driving on a suspended license, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle

speeding 15-20 mph over the limit.

misdemeanor possession of a small amount of marijuana and driving while intoxicated. Court records show that the DWI charge was dismissed,

misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, but the charge was dismissed.

Driving too fast for conditions or failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

2004 one count of retail theft of less than $150. sentenced to community service and supervision.

How does this relate to an Impaired driver high on DOPE on public roadways endangering lives and 6'00 175 lbs fighting with Police ? smh

Hopefully all these excuse makers will never have family / friends killed by an impaired driver and I bet they change their tune .

How about acting like a proper lady instead of a nasty foul mouthed . I empathize family must be so Embarrassed her acting like that . I'd be Ashamed to have a child act like that to ANY human being much less an authority figure .

Thank you, this was what I meant when I was pulled over and while looking for my registration I pulled out my cigs & he scolded me by saying it would stunt my growth & he was not as tall as me (5'7"), I could have said something, but I as the one about to get a ticket kept my mouth shut. I will never understand why some folks think it is ok to curse or talk down to a police officer, I just don't see how doing that is going to help them. Yet every time there is a bad cop story, this is what I see, someone that won't listen when a cop tells them what to do. They have an attitude the moment the cop arrives at the vehicle and them cry foul when they get a ticket for the offense they are accused of. idk jmo If you get caught doing something wrong... just own it, pay the fine and move on with life.

Average number of people per day that receive a speeding ticket 112,000

http://www.statisticbrain.com/driving-citation-statistics/

I wonder how many of these 112,000 people didn't think they did anything wrong and got irritated and then arrested? I didn't hear of any other arrest that went bad that day or any day since, could have missed it. jmo idk

Not all traffic offenders are treated the same. Primarily black and white drivers. Take a look at this video. A white guy deliberately provokes cops to stop him. Then he disobeys an unlawful order to turn off his camera, just like Sandra Bland disobeyed an unlawful order to put out her cigarette, but he doesn't get arrested. He doesn't get ordered out of his car and handcuffed. The cop just grovels and gives him his license back anyway. Because he is white and they don't generally arrest white people for stupid things like that. This is a racist country, and anyone who can't see that is just burring their head in the sand.

Nice of you to say so -- but are you seriously trying to suggest that SB was given that choice to 'pay the fine and move on with life'? Really?

She clearly stated that our practice was cut and dried. I have committed my life to my profession and for someone to cast doubt that teachers use peaceful methods to handle scary situations, well that is just accusatory.

The subject only came up after her asking "well what do teachers do?"

She then cast doubt on our truthful answers. That is her right. But it is also our right to defend our practices.

Good night.

BE said that SB wouldn't look at him during the stop. I bet she did when he asked her in a cold tone of voice if she was done and that she could exit her car.
Maybe what she saw frightened her.
I'm not so sure anything would have changed if she had meekly done what he had asked.
IMO the guy seemed unstable.
I just never heard any fear in her voice, and after watching that dash cam video, then watching her FB video's. Then watching the dash cam, she had the same tone and attitude as the videos. JMHO
