Came to websleuths to catch up on this because the posts on social media are truly unreadable. What kind of a country are we if we have completely moved away from the shock and horror of shootings and we just start saying ‘Your guy did it.’ ‘No, your guy did it!’

I am so heartsick and I don’t know how we can move forward as a nation from here.

Awesome link. Also points out the shooter was unemployed and was planning on moving to OK to live with his parents. I wonder why his brother was interviewed prior to learning his brother was the shooter.

I have absolutely no experience with firearms so I’m sure some of you can answer my question. I know a photo was shown of a bullet with a message written on it and I believe it was an unfired bullet? Would they be able to determine if the fired bullets had messages written on them? Like is there enough of a fired bullet left to see a message on it or if it was written on, even if indecipherable?

Absolutely nothing wrong with not having experience with fire arms. That aside....

First start with some vocabulary and how a gun works.....

- Bullet vs Cartridge vs 'Round': A bullet is what the gun actually shoots. A cartridge is a cylindrical object that holds the propellant (gun powder). A "round" is a cartridge that has a bullet attached to it.

- To fire a gun, a "round" (cartridge with bullet attached) is loaded into the chamber. When the gun is fired, the bullet flies down the gun barrel. Depending on the gun, the now "spent" cartridge is then either automatically ejected from the gun, or ejected manually by the shooter.

Your question.....

- The political etchings were very likely scratched on the cartridge, not the bullet. So... if the gun was fired, the empty cartridge with the political message would be left behind.

But wait, there is more confusion.....

- Many people will use the term "bullet", "round" and "cartridge" interchangeably when they are not. Others may use the technical terms (round, bullet, cartridge) on some occasions, but just say "bullet" on other occasions. Others will use the technical terms all the time.

The article states he (the brother) was interviewed before he (the brother) found out his brother was ID'd as the shooter.
The media already knew, it's just the poor brother that hadn't heard yet. Imagine hearing such horrible news from the media.

yes, unusual, but if authorities notified the parents first, then there may have been a short window of time if they had an early tip before it was more broadly announced. I've rarely seen it happen, but I have seen it. Just my 2 cents and guess.

Oh wow, that’s fascinating honestly. I had no idea, I actually used all of those interchangeably too (especially bullet and round). Casings I had a little better handle on from watching firearm testimony in trials

Someone upthread called the bullets in Patel’s X post a clip. When I think clip, I think of the Rambo movies where the shooter has a gun and then a belt of bullets they hang like a crossbody that just automatically feed into the gun, one after another as the bullets go off. Is that what this is? I have a feeling I’m missing a whole lot of nuance in gun lingo/specifics haha

From what's been released so far, it sounds like he wildly shot into an ICE detaining facility , trying to target ICE LEO's ?

What a cruel and foolish act, he only succeeded in murdering two detainees.
Thankful no ICE officers were injured/killed; they are just working at their jobs and don't deserve to be targeted for murder.

Rest in peace to the two deceased, and my utmost condolences to their families !

Also what a bad day for the shooter's family -- to lose their brother and son in such a manner.
They are victims as well.

From what the surviving brother said, it sounds like everything seemed fine two weeks ago; and I believe if they had any inkling of what their relative was going to do, they'd have called LE for Josh's own sake -- as well as themselves, and any others he planned to harm ?

Has the authenticity f the photo been verified yet? Coming out so soon after the shooting raises doubts, JMO. It’s not typical of LE to share photos of evidence within an hour of the crime.

Did LE share it with the public or share with a leader who decided to post it online?

It was raining this morning at the site, so the raindrops seem to be accurate of a crime-scene photo.
