UBLIC STATEMENT BY PHILIP R. KLEIN, PRESIDENT
This morning on the radio show broadcasted on KXDJ radio in Perryton, Texas, host and DJ Chris Samples once again went on the attack of Penny and Chris Meek, Tucker Brown and this firm regarding the homicide of Thomas Brown of Canadian, Texas. He uses a co-host in his attack, a man named Michael Crain.
When we first met Chris Samples, we believed he cared about finding Thomas Brown, so I interviewed with him several times. I wanted to make sure the area's citizens did not fear the unknown and gave information that could help the case. During the interviews, we continually informed the public that our focus was Lake Marvin Road. We made the statement because that is where the evidence led us. We were right – Tom’s remains were found on Lake Marvin Road.
Samples became upset with me one morning and off-air asked me if I thought Law Enforcement was involved. I retorted that all avenues of this case were on the table. Sensing that Samples was not going to be objective any longer I advised staff that we were not going to do the Samples show. We received 12 requests to do the show and did not appear.
Post that decision, a man named Michael Crain began to appear on the KXDJ show. We were given recordings of the show and listened closely to what Mr. Crain said. In just listening to Mr. Crain, we offered to fly, let him stay in a hotel room, pay him a per Diem for his meals, and host him (Crain) in our offices to read the entire case file along with all of the evidence. Mr. Crain never accepted the invitation which made us concerned. He was sold ON AIR as a “former state investigator” but in being a law enforcement officer as those that were involved – all accepted our invitation to review the investigation in our offices. Crain refused.
Post Crain’s refusal to come down and take a look at our investigation, the state investigation, and the USDOJ’s investigation that we had (and have) in our possession, it concerned our team. We launched a side investigation into who was Michael Crain, “the former state investigator.”
We discovered that Crain was a used car salesman who had a long history in North Texas of jumping from one car dealership to another. From Dallas to Dalhart, Crain had a long-sorted history. As such, we discovered that Crain had portrayed himself as a former Navy Seal. So, we made a request to the Department of Defense for his service records. During this time, we found advertisements in papers from his employers stating his credentials as a former Navy Seal. We found that Michael Crain had never been a Navy Seal. Even worse, he had been kicked out of the Navy after being involved in a serious fight that injured an innocent Navy seaman, and he was diagnosed with “A Personality Disorder.” We further learned that the only job he had was as an electrician’s apprentice which he never completed. He was “discharged” according to the records. He was NOT “honorably discharged.” To say the least, we were shocked. Crain had stolen valor issues that the DOD (Department of Defense) was previously aware of, however, began a secondary investigation. We cooperated fully with the investigation.
We proceeded to file a §552 request with the State of Texas for his law enforcement background. During one of the shows with Chris Samples, he touted his training and background in all sorts of investigations. His records showed that he was never involved in any investigations other than being a “bottle” reader for liquor stamps and inspections of liquor stores. He was employed for only 18 months, according to the records, and left for the US Navy where he again was discharged. During our interviews with his former employers, they stated clearly that they had concerns about Mr. Crain, and thus his termination. They too stated that he claimed and told stories about his Navy Seal training and operations “overseas” which they doubted after listening to him.
We also checked his credentials with the Texas Department of Public Safety Private Security Board, which he had none. He was acting in the course and scope of an “investigator” but did not have a license to do so. And he did not have a client. He, along with Michelle Gomez of Central Texas began to attempt to insert themselves into the Brown case without a client. In the end, Crain did get licensed, and Gomez settled with the DPSPSB for a fine and reprimand. As well Gomez was voted out of the Texas Association of Licensed Investigators for deception.
The question that not only we had, but the DOJ had was whether Chris Samples knew of Michael Crain’s background before he put them on air. Viciously and with anger both Samples and Crain attacked the Meeks and Tucker Brown with false, misstated evidence and most of all flat-out lies – which continued on this morning's broadcast.
When Samples and Crain suggested that Meeks and Tucker Brown found Toms's body at their home, and then packaged the body and dumped it “somewhere” to hide the embarrassment of suicide – they had enough. They sued Samples, his radio station, and Michael Crain for liable and slander. The case was heard (preliminary) in Lubbock, Texas. Samples and Crain’s lawyers filed under the TCPA (Texas Citizens Participation Act) that Samples and Crain had the right to have an opinion. The Appeals Court upheld their opinion. It was then appealed by attorneys for the Meeks and Brown to the Texas Supreme Court and they too upheld the TCPA ruling. Meaning that even if statements made by Samples and Crain are false, they are entitled to their “opinions.” Crain also set up a GO FUND ME page which he collected over $2,100. He has never shown or proven that he paid his lawyers any money – as they are insurance lawyers we are told. Meaning? What happened to the money? We are more than sure that he gave the money to his lawyers – right? That will be followed very closely.
Further, as an “entertainer” Samples is entitled to put anyone on his airwaves and has no responsibility whatsoever to research and check their backgrounds. We believe that Samples knew of Crain’s
background and psychological background and problems – which is a disservice to his listeners and the public. As you can see, both chirp about the Meeks, Tucker Brown, and our firm, as they are living the lies and making their show (s) sound like there is a conspiracy when in fact there is none. The Meeks and Tucker Brown have done nothing but suffer the loss of their son and brother. There is ZERO evidence that Samples and Crain’s theory are even viable. The entire group of shows are based upon what they had read in the paper, some police reports that were falsified (remember that Pyne Gregory was served a Brady Act – meaning no prosecutor was going to take any cases from him and he had to quit being a cop), and of course, there was a huge discovery at the Sheriff's Office when TCOLE came in and found false records and stolen items from case files – including from the Thomas Brown Case. This firm was DIRECTLY involved in those investigations after bringing it to the attention of the OAG and the USDOJ to which they acted and the Sherriff resigned post agreement with the state.
Thomas Brown’s remains are now subject to a second lawsuit after Thomas’s father, Kelly Brown, refused to allow a forensics examination of his remains by an independent team of agents and officers. His excuse: “I don’t want Philip Klein in the room.” Not only is that sick, but it is highly unusual – unless you go up the trail of evidence that will be heard by a Federal Grand Jury one day we believe. Kelly Brown’s relationship with a police chief and hired a police officer named Pyne Gregory even after he had a Brady Notice placed on him and did not disclose it to his city council or the District Attorney of Lubbock County. The Police Chief employs Michael Crain as a private investigator, yet, portrays to the public that his boss (the Police Chief) who owns a private security company was “dragged” into the case to the public knowing that every single liar and corrupt police officer has something to do with him. That police chief is friends with Kelly Brown. Thus why every single honest investigator, police officer, and federal agent now has their investigations looking into the relationships between all of the parties.
We believe there is a major cover-up in the Thomas Brown case. We believe either Chris Samples and his radio station are being used or they are involved. We believe that Michael Crain is not only a liar and makes things up as he goes – but he is a mentally ill person as has been previously diagnosed by the US Navy and the man cannot hold down a job. We believe that Chris Samples continues to put him up on the radio as some type of legitimate professional “former state investigator” when he was just a bottle reader and stolen valor punk. We believe Chris Samples is a good entertainer who doesn’t care about the truth – just his chance to be a big dog in a little pond. And lastly, we will say this – many of us want to know the relationship between Kelly Brown and this cast of characters. It was Kelly Brown who first suggested to Law Enforcement the “suicide theory” that again there is ZERO evidence of such according to documents.
We are not done. We are going to continue and as we promised the citizens of Hemphill County we will figure it out. In our opinion, good, honest, and hard-working people have been scared by these clowns and liars who get on the radio, and corrupt police officers in small towns that are hiding what they know. As some, like Kelly Brown, run around and point the finger at us, the Meeks, Tucker Brown try to manipulate this case from behind the curtain all the while acting like some Pope that has no (ZERO) evidence of his ex-wife hiding their son’s body and blaming investigators that were involved from DAY ONE – it is sick. And it needs to stop.
Chris Samples needs to be better. Stop being an Entertainer and be a community leader. Michael Crain needs (as a commander who did the research said) to apologize to the US Navy, the US Navy Seal Team Members, and the public in general for lying about his service. And Kelly Brown needs to take a hard look in the mirror and figure out if he is helping the case, hurting the case, or maybe even deflecting the case.
We are going to find out. And we are going to fix it. That is what we do.
Our prayers and thoughts go out tonight to the Meeks and Tucker Brown who once again had to suffer the tongue of the devils that surround us all.
