Updated statement from Essex Police

"Update: Thursday 24 October 2019 11:37
A 25-year-old lorry driver from Northern Ireland remains in custody after 39 people were found dead in Grays yesterday morning, Wednesday 23 October.
Throughout yesterday, our detectives worked with partners to conduct initial enquiries into these tragic deaths and we continue to work diligently to piece together the circumstances of this horrific event, which has led to the largest murder investigation in our force’s history.

Our work continues today, and for the foreseeable future, to be focused on providing the victims and their loved ones with an investigation that is filled with dignity, compassion and respect for those who have died.

Our lines of enquiry are extensive and will be thorough. This means that we might not have all the answers straight away. We do have some key facts, which are:

  • The tractor unit of the lorry had entered the country via Holyhead on Sunday 20 October, having travelled over from Dublin.
  • The lorry then collected the trailer, which had travelled from Zeebrugge, at the port of Purfleet at around 12:30am on the 23 October. The cab and trailer left the port shortly after 1.05am.
  • We were called to Waterglade Industrial Park in Eastern Avenue shortly before 1.40am on Wednesday 23 October by our colleagues in the East of England Ambulance Service to reports that 39 people had been found dead in the trailer of a lorry.
Of these, 38 are believed to be adults, and one is a young adult woman. We previously reported that she may have been a teenager. We have since confirmed that eight of the deceased are women and 31 are men and all are believed to be Chinese nationals. We arrested a man on suspicion of murder, who remains in custody.

We want to be clear – we have not speculated about the identity of this man, and we will not do so. We can confirm that three properties in County Armagh have been searched in connection with our investigation.

The lorry has since been removed from the industrial park to allow the next stage of our investigative process to be conducted in peace, and to give the utmost dignity to those within the trailer as we prepare for a coroner’s post-mortem examination.

Each of the 39 people must undergo a full coroner’s process to establish a cause of death, before we move on to attempting to identify each individual within the trailer. This will be a substantial operation and, at this stage, we cannot estimate how long these procedures will take.

Local residents and businesses have shown us the utmost kindness and respect as we deal with this difficult and sensitive investigation. Thank you for patience, your offers for cups of tea for our hardworking teams, for the flowers that have started to appear in Eastern Avenue, and the signatures we know will appear in the Book of Condolences at the Civic Centre.

We would also like to thank all of our local and national partners for their assistance and support, especially the Red Cross who gave our officers a quiet place to go when they needed a moment, and Thurrock Council who have continued to help us ensure that disruption to the local community is minimal.

We will continue to work with partners and other law enforcement agencies to establish exactly how these 39 people lost their lives in such an untimely way. This process will be complex and lengthy, as well as incredibly challenging for all those involved, but we will not stop until we get answers for the loved ones of those who have sadly died.

If you are worried about a family member, friend, or loved one please call our dedicated hotline on 0800 056 0944 if you live in the UK and 0044 207 158 0010 if you’re dialling internationally.

Anyone who has any information about this incident can call 101 or submit information to the UK Police Major Incident Public Reporting site"

24 October 2019:

A "horrified" lorry driver found the bodies of 39 migrants inside a trailer he was hauling when when he went to check paperwork, a friend claims.

Friends have said the trucker, named locally as 25-year-old Mo Robinson, raised the alarm himself after finding the victims - all Chinese nationals - dead inside the refrigerated container.

A friend claimed Robinson was innocent, telling MailOnline: "(Mo) wouldn’t have known those people were in the back.

"Apparently he’d parked up at the industrial estate in Essex and had gone to fetch the paperwork from a pocket on the inside of the lorry door.

"When he opened the container up and saw all the dead bodies, he was absolutely horrified - as anyone would be - and called the ambulance service who in turn alerted the police."

Friend on how 'horrified' Irish lorry driver found 39 bodies in container

IMO this was a release point for illegals.

why did ‘someone’ open the load at this point ? It wasn’t to unload to another business as IMO no business people were there to take the cargo.

Ambulance staff were called then the ambulance called police , so it wasn’t police who opened it on a routine stop.

who is the someone who opened the vehicle ? IMO it can only be the driver.

why would driver open load when not at delivery point ? IMO to release the illegals .

terribly sad don’t get me wrong , but my feelings are is the driver is part of the chain .

Essex lorry deaths: All 39 victims revealed to be 'Chinese nationals' as Mo Robinson remains in custody

All 39 victims found dead in the back of a refrigerated lorry trailer in Essex were Chinese nationals, it is reported.

The bodies of 38 adults and one teenager were discovered inside the container at an industrial estate in Grays in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police have arrested driver Mo Robinson of Portadown, Northern Ireland on suspicion of murder and raided two properties linked with the 25-year-old in Co Armagh overnight.

Officers have not said he has been released, despite reports to the contrary.

10:20am

The investigation into the deaths of 39 people in a lorry container is continuing today.

10:21am

We are aware of strong rumours which have been circulating on Facebook concerning the custody status of the man arrested in connection with the deaths.

The most up to date information is that Mo Robinson, from Portadown, in Northern Ireland, is still in custody.

Police have up to 48 hours to questions anyone arrested on suspicion of murder.

10:28am

The lorry was driven from the industrial estate yesterday evening to a secure area of the Port of Tilbury, where today, we expect police to focus on removing the bodies from the lorries.

10:28am

We understand the post mortem examinations will not start today, which means there will be a wait while for an official cause of death.

10:31am

Shaun Sawyer, the Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police and the National Police Chiefs Council lead for modern slavery and human trafficking, said the incident is a tragedy.

It is, he says, a tragedy which law enforcement, NGOs, the church and faith groups are working "every single moment of every single day" to prevent.

He added: "So how many have we prevented? How many lives that we saved? Turn it on its head.

"It will be hundreds and thousands. But sadly, tragically, for 39 people that didn't work yesterday."

Mr Sawyer added: "You can't turn the United Kingdom into a fortress."

He said even if there were routes that were perceived as easier to get through, organised criminals would still exploit people who do not access those routes.

10:33am

Councillor Paul Berry said the village of Laurelvale, where the Robinson family live, was in "complete shock".

Mr Berry, who has been in contact with Mr Robinson's father several times, said he learned of his son's arrest through social media.

10:35am

Mo Robinson, 25, remains in custody this morning and his parents have flown to England to support their son.

Here is the latest update from the County Armagh town of Laurelvale.

10:39am

Independent Mr Berry, who has been in contact with Mr Robinson's father several times, said he learned of his son's arrest through social media.

He added: "He had said he had been getting messages via people on social media on what was happening and at that stage it was not confirmed to him or his family that his son had been arrested.

"In the local area the feeling is one of complete shock and hope this is not a true story in terms of his involvement."

Mr Berry, who knows the father well, said the family were "very well respected" in the area.

He added: "The local community is hoping that he (Mo Robinson) has been caught up innocently in this matter but that's in the hands of Essex Police, and we will leave it in their professional hands to try to catch the perpetrators of this."

He said the family had been left upset by the "unwelcome spotlight" the incident had shone on them.

"It was very distressing for the family as they just felt they were captive in their own home," he said.

10:48am

It has now been confirmed the 39 people found dead in the back of the lorry are Chinese nationals.

11:08am

Originally, police believed the container had entered the UK at Holyhead having travelled from Dublin Port.

Later on yesterday, investigators confirmed the container had in fact docked at Purfleet - from Zeebrugge, in Belgium - shortly after midnight on Wednesday.

A number of migrants have been detained there this morning.

Police bosses say the probe into the deaths of 39 people who were discovered in the back of a lorry container is the "largest in the force's history".

In an update issued just minutes ago, Essex Police also confirmed 25-year-old lorry driver Mo Robinson, from Northern Ireland, remains in custody.

Officers have also confirmed a young woman - initially referred to as a teenager - is among the dead.

Eight of the dead are women and 31 are men and all are believed to be Chinese nationals.

12:19pm

So, with that news in mind, this is what we now know:

  • The tractor unit of the lorry had entered the country via Holyhead on Sunday 20 October, having travelled over from Dublin
  • The lorry then collected the trailer, which had travelled from Zeebrugge, at the port of Purfleet at around 12.30am on Wednesday. The cab and trailer left the port shortly after 1.05am
  • Police were called to Waterglade Industrial Park, in Eastern Avenue, shortly before 1.40am on Wednesday by the East of England Ambulance Service to reports that 39 people had been found dead in the trailer of a lorry
  • Of these, 38 are believed to be adults, and one is a young adult woman

Meanwhile, councillor has called the events in Grays “a terrible crime” and promised the council will make a donation to the Red Cross to thank them for their support.

James Halden spoke about the incident during a sombre council meeting last night, telling colleagues it was an event that “assaults our understanding of humanity”.

12:26pm

Mr Halden, speaking in council leader Rob Gledhill’s absence, said: “Let us be clear, this is a terrible crime, and we will do whatever is needed and put in place whatever is needed to support enforcement agencies to eradicate this evil."

He continued: “I want to put on record my thanks to all partners.

“From health partners such as the Clinical Commissioning Group and Basildon and Broomfield hospitals who stepped forward to support necessary arrangements for the deceased, to the businesses in Lakeside and charities who supported the men and women in our emergency services, to the council staff who ensured organization still functioned during such a terrible situation.

“To this end, Thurrock Council will make a donation to the Red Cross to thank them for their help and support, and myself and the Acting CEO will visit the area tomorrow to thank staff."

12:26pm

He added: “Of course my biggest thanks go to the police. We see the police each and every day, but it’s only when you sit on the other end of the phone and hear them talk about the most gruesome events and approach it with such professionalism and clarity, that you truly see the depth and breadth of their work.

“They saw and dealt with things today which we all have the good fortune of being kept away from, and we salute them for that.”

The tragic news of what is being reported as the bodies of 39 Chinese nationals discovered in a lorry in Essex seems baffling to me. If they were part of a human trafficking ring, you'd expect more young women and children, but 31 of them were reportedly men. (1/2)

(2/2) ...and these days, Chinese nationals are able to travel to/from Europe w/far more ease than, say, a decade or two ago, when this sort of human smuggling was more common from China...so what happened here?
