Evil trafficking gangs 'have used same route used by Essex lorry for years'

'"We had a lorry pull up opposite where our unit is. The driver got out, opened up the back and about 20 people got out and ran off up the road.

"The thing is it’s such a quiet area and of an evening it’s very dark. I believe the police are looking at our CCTV going forward.'

Update: Thursday 24 October 2019 14:38

Detectives investigating the murder of 39 people in Grays have secured a warrant of further detention from local magistrates at Basildon for a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland.

The man, a lorry driver, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and will now remain in custody for up to an additional 24 hours.

It follows the tragic discovery of the bodies of 8 women and 31 men in the trailer of a lorry in Waterglade Industrial Park, Grays, shortly before 1.40am on Wednesday 23 October.

Deputy Chief Constable Pippa Mills said: “We continue to ask journalists and those on social media not to speculate about the identity of the lorry driver.

“This is an incredibly sensitive and high-profile investigation, and we are working swiftly to gather as full a picture as possible as to how these people lost their lives.

“Our recovery of the bodies is ongoing and the post-mortem and identification processes, which will be lengthy and complex, can then begin.

“Our number one priority is the preserving the dignity of the 39 people who have died and ensuring that we get answers for their loved ones.”

This afternoon, Superintendent Craig Saunders and Chief Inspector Claire Talbot paid their respects with members of Thurrock Council by signing the open book of condolence at the civic office in Grays.

When is the 48 hour hold time up for MR? They've got to be getting close to needing to formally charge him or let him go.

18 hours or so?

I don't know exactly how it works, but I think they'll have arrested him and been questioning him, and while he's being questioned then any names that he gives, any names on paperwork, his boss, the people who sent the container over, there'll have to be other investigators following those leads to try and get to the bottom of who knew what in the trail of movement.

So maybe they'll find the driver probably didn't know, and then release him without charge or on police bail? On the other hand they might find evidence on his phone or computer to say that he did know what the cargo was going to be. But they have to check into so many things while he's being held.

The first eight bodies from the container are set to be moved to a mortuary later on today.

They will be transported under police escort by private ambulance from the Port of Tilbury to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.

The next stages will be for post-mortem examinations to be carried out.

Police hope to have all the bodies recovered from the lorry before the weekend.

and they have extended the holding time now.

ok so newspapers claiming he was getting out the paperwork as he was at his delivery point and that’s how discovered ..., how do the newspapers know that ? He phoned ambulance, did he phone a friend to tell them that & they told papers? What businesses was the truck parked by that could possibly be expecting a refrigerator load, it looks like he’s just at a random place on the road not outside a business ?

The daily mail article states the lorry was registered in 2017 in Bulgaria but never returned. So was it insured? Do they not require yearly licensing?

Of course it’s insured, insurance is compulsory.

The company who owns the truck, is registered in Bulgaria, it’s a way of overcoming huge tax costs in the UK but skill being able to operate Europe wide. The truck doesn’t have to return to Bulgaria.

Essex: 39 bodies in truck container identified as Chinese nationals -- live updates - CNN

'The chief executive of Zeebrugge port, Joachim Coens, told Belgium's Flemish public broadcaster VRT he thinks that it's "extremely unlikely" the people found dead in the back of a truck were loaded into the trailer at Zeebrugge because of the checks that take place at the port.

“One makes a visual check with cameras, and looks if the seal is intact, and then is placed at the terminal,” Coens said.

“If it’s a refrigerated container that’s closed with a seal, then it’s also hermetically sealed, so you can’t see inside with CO2 or dogs, so then above all the seal is checked, a visual check, also the driver is checked, and then nothing else happens with it because it’s also not possible that people get inside at that place, because it’s sealed off. Right before it goes onboard, it’s again checked if everything is still in order. And then it goes to the other side,” Coens explained.'

So if it had a seal why would the paper work be in the back. I initially thought he as at the delivery point bit nothing l have seen so far confirms that. I'm on slight side eye awaiting further info facial expression.
