Irish company confirms it leased refrigerated trailer at centre of Essex tragedy

A spokesperson for Global Trailer Rentals Ltd (GTR) has confirmed that it owns the refrigerated trailer in which 39 people were found dead in Essex yesterday.

GTR is based in Dublin but also has locations in counties Louth and Monaghan.

The spokesperson said the trailer leased on 15 October from Global Trailer Rentals' yard in Co Monaghan at a rate of €275 per week until it is returned.

The company has contacted the incident team in Essex police directly and gave them information about the person and company that leased the trailer.

Trailers owned by Global Trailer Rentals are equipped with GPS trackers.

GTR said it will make the data from its tracking system available to investigating police.

The company's directors said they are "shellshocked" at the news and "gutted" that one of their trailers had been used in such a way.

The company extended its sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of the those who died.

In a statement this afternoon GTR said it was "entirely unaware that the trailer was to be used in the manner in which it appears to have been".

It says the company contacted Essex Police yesterday "immediately upon becoming aware that a trailer on lease from this company had been involved in this incident".

Police bring parents to visit Essex lorry deaths suspect

The parents of a man arrested over the deaths of 39 people found in a refrigerated lorry have been brought by police to England from their home in Northern Ireland to see him, the Guardian understands.

[...]

Three properties in Northern Ireland – Robinson’s home, a nearby property he used to share with his parents, and a third site in Armagh – were raided overnight. Computers were taken away as part of the investigation, sources said.

Well whether he is involved or not, he is only a part of a wider ring of criminality. If EP want to get to the bottom of it, l'm not sure letting the world know where he and his family live will help that. There is a significant element of fear in these crimes from the top down and our suspect was at the bottom of the rung. The sacrificial lamb.

I offer mine & @EssexPoliceUK condolences to the families who have lost loved ones in tragedy in Essex. My thanks to all working on the investigation or supporting it & I appeal for information to help detectives investigate this crime. @ukhomeoffice @NCA_UK @thurrockcouncil

I'm shocked that there haven't been additional arrests yet. I think if he were completely innocent, he would give up everything he knows. It's almost impossible to believe he knew nothing if he is innocent-wouldn't the secrecy arouse suspicion?

Had been wondering why the victims fled from China, as i perceived it to be a wealthy and powerful country...
39 found dead in lorry were Chinese nationals
"Analysis
By Celia Hatton, BBC Asia Pacific Regional Editor

When China makes the news headlines, it's often painted as wealthy global power.

However, its boom has also fostered extreme inequality, with the top one percent of Chinese citizens holding one-third of the country's riches. That gap is widening: a continuing trade war with the United States has forced many factories to close, disproportionately punishing some of China's poorest workers.

Surveys have repeatedly found that China's upper and middle class citizens are eager to leave the mainland, citing worries about the lack of high-quality schooling and health care, and lingering pollution and food safety problems.

Poor people in China have the same concerns but they have less opportunity to emigrate overseas. The Chinese government controls who can get a passport and who qualifies for an exit permit. Ever-tightening controls allow people smugglers and human traffickers to prey on those who are desperate to find work.

We don't yet know the story behind why the people found on the Essex lorry had taken that journey. A UK government report on modern slavery published one year ago found that China was the third most common foreign country of origin for victims of human trafficking."

If he's completely innocent , surely there is nothing to give up?

I'm still wondering why and when and who turned on the refrigeration. Was it supposed to be at a milder setting but the thermostat malfunctioned? Or was it supposed to be on only for a short while but then wasn't turned off as planned?

How do these things work? Is there the possibility to adjust the temperature or switch it on/off inside the trailer, or are all the controls on the outside?

I have a weiner jk im mo robinson

This looks like our man. Odd.

Edit it's a link to a Facebook page set up in 2011, in case it looks like spam. Well someone didn't like him, anyway.

I agree with the possibility that he was only transporting the victims on the final leg of their journey.

As for not having any knowledge, he evidently opened the container at a strange time and place- then made a "discovery". My guess is that he was shocked by the deaths, but not by the presence of the people.

Ah, I hadn’t heard it reported that he had opened the container. I thought because it was a refrigeration container, it would have been shut with one of the bolts they use that can only be accessed with a bolt cutter, and the final recipient of this would reject the load if it was opened. That is a very unusual place to have stopped and opened the container.

If he were completely innocent, he would give up the people who hired him for the job. Since there haven't been any additional arrests yet, I can only imagine he has not done this.

I would strongly assume that the people who set this up did not provide real names and contact numbers in addition to fake paper work. It might take LE a good while to get to the bottom of this.

THE 39 Chinese migrants whose bodies were found in a refrigerated lorry trailer in Essex had been dead for at least 12 hours before reaching the UK, it is claimed.

The trailer arrived at Purfleet from Zeebrugge in Belgium at around 12.30am on Wednesday after a ten-hour ferry ride.

Vehicles must arrive at the Belgian port around one and a half hours before the boat leaves.

The Mayor of Zeebrugge, Dirk De Fauw, insist the migrants were dead before they arrived at Zeebrugge, or they would have been detected by heat cameras.
