Equally valid question.

I do not think China "blamed the EU" but suggested that they and the UK bore SOME responsibility. This must be the case .. surely all states have SOME responsibility for everything which occurs within their borders.
True. But these poor souls did not climb into this refrigerated lorry while in the UK, if I understand things correctly. They snuck in illegally. So I am not understanding why the UK would be to blame, for this horrendous situation.

Mrs Maher is named in documents as the last known owner of the Scania cab, which was registered in Bulgaria and driven by Mo Robinson.

Officials think the migrants entered the refrigerated unit before they got to Zebrugge and attention on mainland Europe is now on the driver who delivered it to the port.
source told Dutch-language newspaper Het Nieusblad: ‘We hope to catch him soon. His truck was filmed ten times at the port site.’

A Belgian police officer, who asked not to be named, said it would be ‘virtually impossible’ for migrants to get into the lorries at Zebrugge because of security.

However, if they were placed in lorries further afield and the refrigerated unit switched on, they would avoid being detected by heat-sensing cameras or sniffer dogs at the port.

I have another technical question ..... I wonder how many mobile phone calls were made through the masts along the 10 minute route from Purfleet Docks to Eastern Avenue at that time of the morning? .. Surely there is a log ?
Masts aren’t that important now I would imagine given we all walk round with GPS in our pockets, being tracked by apps when we d t realise (like camera app / google etc)... also on mo’s Facebook up until about 2016 there’s loads of check ins to ports and services on his profile publicly so one can see where he was a regular historically as well.

Blame is such an odd term .... I always think ...however in any transaction there must be shared responsibility

In this case the UK is clearly responsible for dealing with the bodies with respect, and is responsible for investigating the incident to try to determine what has actually happened ... at least on UK soil.

If it turns out that policies and procedures within the UK contributed to the event, then the UK must be responsible for addressing that... Similarly the EU... and any other states along the way.

Sorry, the question was how many calls were made ........

through those particular phone masts

in that time frame

Police are urgently trying to track down the driver who delivered the trailer, later discovered to contain 39 people, to a port in Belgian before being shipped to the UK.

Essex lorry latest.

4 people being questioned:

* Mo Robinson (25) from NI

* 48yo from NI arrested at Stansted Airport

* Joanna Maher (38), her husband Thomas (38) from Warrington.

Before their arrest they denied having anything to do with the lorry, having sold it last year.

That is an extreme view. They may have died in other ways if there were no borders.

China blaming the EU seems unfair. WHY are these immigrants so desperate to leave their homelands? Maybe some of the blame should go in that direction, instead of the country that holds the answer to their troubles.

Why not ask the hard questions about why they are fleeing their homelands in such desperation?

BBM they are economic migrants. One or more family members come to work in a more prosperous country then send money back to their families. Otherwise they could claim refugee status when they get here.

I think we need to be careful about dragging other potentially controversial issues into this that take the focus away from the criminal investigation (not aimed at you @katydid23 )

According to the Sun newspaper

"
A spokesman for the Belgian prosecutor's office confirmed they are investigating the truck, saying: "We're trying to identify the driver."

He said Belgian authorities were also working to "track the route of the container" and find anyone responsible for "collaborating with the transport".
"

And yet .. the GTR website claims the containers are fitted with BlueTree.. and it was reported that they (GTR) have handed the logs to the UK police.

I understand that the Blue-Tree system can log all sorts of information including the GPS co-ordinates of the container, and the temperature (in the case of a reefer)
