Also to add that I am disappointed in those sentences. I know they are rarely given out but surely it doesn't get much worse than the prolonged physical/psychological abuse, beatings, poisoning, starvation and torture of a young child before ultimately murdering them to quantify a whole life tariff?

Emma Tustin will be treated better in prison than Arthur was alive, she will have a warm bed with a mattress, 3 meals a day, which Arthur never had.

And probably end up in a place away from others in a special wing or something due to people obviously wanting to hurt her.

Has ET really spent 529 days in custody already??

TH will be out in 12 and a half years from now as the clock on the 14 years started in June 2020?

Ms Hughes: "I have also listened to barbed comments by a witness that the death of Arthur did not affect him, which is sickening and abhorrent. It is clear from Miss Tustin’s evidence we, as a family will not have a definite answer or explanation of how Arthur died, yet another burden we will shoulder for our lifetime.

"It is also clear from the evidence that I have heard that Arthur was failed by the very authorities that we, as a society, are led to believe are there to ensure the safety of everyone. As a mother and grandmother it is with a profound despondency that I have failed in my sole purpose to keep my loved ones safe and ensure their life is filled with only joy, happiness and contentment.

"This, woefully, is no longer the case for any of us and it is with a heavy heart that we have all realised this will never ever be the case again.

"Finally, we as a family, are emphatic that Arthur would be alive today, a happy, contented, thriving, seven-year-old with the opportunity to reach his full potential during his lifetime, if Tom had not met Emma Tustin.

"We believe this now and for evermore
.

I am really disappointed in the family for this comment. I was ragged on for believing that the family had a need to believe it was all ET's fault, and here is the proof. It suggests they are trying to shift blame to ET by ignoring TH's culpability. They have not addressed their evil son/brother at all.

Arthur would also be alive if many things hadn't happened, namely lockdown. But With TH's lack of empathy and love for his son, there would have always been the latent risk that he would do something terrible to Arthur. The gun was already loaded, in the form of Thomas Hughes' lack of parental love and responsibility, lack of capability as a father, inadequacy as a man, resulting false pride, and man-child tendencies. It only took the stress of being forced into full-time fatherhood, combined with a relationship with a woman who hated his son, in order to pull the trigger.

I will believe for now and for evermore that TH was the worse abuser, up until the day before he died.

Finding it hard to say anything about this pair that won't get me a warning.

These were the sentences I expected but it doesn't make it any better. Both should never have seen daylight ever again.

As for allowing that evil thing to not to be there in court? Disgraceful. Drag her there if you have to.

14 years. Like think back to 2007, not that long ago.

Imagine that ET had not “lost her f****** s***”. And TH had continued to deny Arthur food and beat him and abuse him with the long list of tortures. Arthur would surely have died within days. And then TH would surely have gone down for murder as the primary caregiver. He had nearly killed him. He had deliberately pushed and pushed Arthur down the long hill to death. And she stepped in and finished it off. If she had not done so, the sentences would probably have been reversed.

TH got away with murder because ET murdered Arthur.

Absolutely. If ET had not lost her 🤬🤬🤬🤬, then Arthur would have died anyway. He already had a blot clot in his brain. It would probably have been TH who killed him.

TH has got away very lightly. I will always believe he abused Arthur just as much, if not more so than ET. And TH's psyhchological abuse was far worse IMO, deliberately giving him false hope of escaping to his beloved grandparents, then turning round and driving back home. Getting rid of his cuddly toy, and ripping up his Birmingham shirt. As his father any abuse from him would have hurt Arthur's little heart that much more.

Can somebody explain to me in simple words why to bother give 21 year sentence when, in reality, the monster will leave prison after only 14???

Let's just be honest and say:
The sentence is 14 years.

How do the charges work out, TH guilty manslaughter, child cruelty and child assault. Do they add years for each of those? And add them up in a total sentence?

how the hell did he get not guilty for food deprivation? Outrageous
Absolutely. If ET had not lost her ****, then Arthur would have died anyway. He already had a blot clot in his brain. It would probably have been TH who killed him.

The Judge pretty much rubbished the jury's verdicts with his statement. I would be pretty embarrassed if I was a juror listening to the judge.

I hope he has his conviction upgraded to murder, based on the fundamental principles of law the prosecutor spoke of during trial.

Yep as I said he pretty much rubbished the verdicts without directly saying so. And you can see it also in his sentence for TH

I agree with you. Arthur had faced the searing reality that his father wanted him dead. He stopped calling for him when he was in his most desperate hours of need, he called out into the universe for his uncle and their family dog.

That's what I thought too. He pointed out that they were both aware of what physical abuse the other was doing.

It's to make them behave in prison. You can't add to an existing sentence, given after a fair trial, for prison misbehaviour, but you can tell them they can't get time off their sentence if they misbehave.
