UK - Car drives into pedestrians at Liverpool FC victory parade. Man detained, 26 May 2025

"No bail application"

Yep.
No surprise here.

After all
I don't think this defendant could roam the streets of Liverpool safely,
even with
"his head bowed" and...
oh wait!
"close to tears" cough, cough
sporting a fancy suit, white shirt and a grey tie.

JMO
Those aren't really what a court would consider, though. It's things like risk of flight, that the defendant might interfere with the course of justice or may commit further offences and suchlike.

I'd suspect that he made no application because he's probably better off inside, tbh. Also, perhaps if he thinks he's going to be convicted then he may as well not bother as any time on remand will be taken off the sentence handed down.

All just my opinion, obviously.

I have a question.
MSM reported about 70+ victims.
But the charges show 6 victims.

Will the number of charges increase in future?
What about other casualties? 🤔
Or do only those in hospital represent others?
But,
one never knows what long term effects can be,
even if some victims have already been discharged from hospitals.

JMO

Quite possibly there will be more charges as it's still an ongoing investigation.

Regarding the GBH charges, the injuries have to be serious to qualify for GBH. Maybe the majority had minor injuries.
But I suspect he'll face further charges.

If anyone subsequently dies from their injuries (not that I think that's on the cards) he'll be staring down the barrel of a potential murder charge.

It'll be interesting to hear if any drugs charges are brought, given that that was one of the reasons for his initial arrest.

"A total of 79 people
suffered injuries in the incident on Water Street in the city centre just after 6pm on Monday,
with the age of the victims ranging from
9 to 78 years old.

More than 50 people
have been treated in different hospitals.

Chief Crown Prosecutor:

'It is important to ensure
every victim
gets the justice they deserve'."

Of course they’d be no bail applications, Dotta you know that.

I agree with you completely
It also gives his wife & Kids time to move away rebuild their lives ;I was surprised the court allowed his street today to be broadcast - they could’ve put that under media embargo to

It's highly unlikely that a court would make orders for things like this.

The reason that the media gives details over and above the simple name of the suspect is to prevent someone else with the same or similar name can't sue them for defamation. His name isn't particularly unusual, I bet there's a few Paul Doyle's in the UK. If they publish his address then Paul Doyle who lives closeby can't be mistaken for him.

It's happened before which resulted in legal cases which gave rise to the reasons why the press provide these details.

I'm not sure that's too likely, tbh. They aren't witnesses and I can't imagine they'd be in such danger that it would warrant police protection.

I agree.

Sure,
they could move places for the time being,
but it would be private decision,
like visiting relatives in other parts of the country, etc.
and certainly not some Safe House provided by Police/Authorities.

Let's not demonize folks living in Liverpool.
I doubt anybody is going to hunt/lynch kids & wife.

Let's be serious.

Doyle is asked to stand, and the charges are put to him.

On count one, dangerous driving, he is accused of driving a Ford Galaxy Titanium, vehicle registration number DC18OPW, dangerous on roads between his home address on Burghill Road and Water Street.
Interesting that the dangerous driving isn’t just linked to that Water Street. Wasn’t a spur of the moment behaviour it seems.

Whether or not his kids and wife might be in danger, I do not know.

The world has gone somewhat crazy IMO and all it takes is one person to decide to get revenge, possibly even somebody who is not connected to the case at all. So not the "folks living in Liverpool", just one possible deranged person who may not even live in Liverpool.

Personally, I think it's unlikely, tbh. As long as they don't go out of their way to be noticed I can't see anyone wanting to do them harm. They'll just disappear into the background.

Possibly. We don't know what they claim he was doing between leaving home and the time he was arrested yet so we will have to wait and see.

To be honest - and this is merely my intuition/opinion here - I get the feeling that we may very likely see guilty pleas being entered here.

All just my opinion, obviously.

I think that's just the way the charge is written, to cover the whole of his journey on that day.
In much the same way that a murder suspect's charge can sometimes give dates that encompass a whole week, when it is known for a fact that the victim died on a specific date during that week.

Unless they have done ANPR /CCTV checks ( where available ) for the whole of his drive from West Derby to the city centre, then I think the dangerous part was just Dale Street and Water Street.

JMO of course

The same thing has happened in Grenoble, France, last night, with a car ploughing into PSG fans injuring 4 people. Not sure whether this has always happened or if it's a new thing due to overpopulation, and poor event planning, more awareness of events due to social media, increase in anger due to cost of living crisis/toxic masculinity, or something else completely.

If I'd done what Paul Doyle allegedly did (and obviously he is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law), I'd be pleading guilty at every opportunity, acknowledging my alcohol/drug/anger issues and seeking counselling, writing to each victim individually to apologise, selling what I could to donate to the victims' fund, offering to give talks to schools on the consequences of alcohol/drug/anger issues and absolutely anything else I could think of to show my remorse. Not to mention feeling guilty for the rest of my life.

I would not make everyone suffer through a trial.
