UK - Car drives into pedestrians at Liverpool FC victory parade. Man detained, 26 May 2025

The same thing has happened in Grenoble, France, last night, with a car ploughing into PSG fans injuring 4 people. Not sure whether this has always happened or if it's a new thing due to overpopulation, and poor event planning, more awareness of events due to social media, increase in anger due to cost of living crisis/toxic masculinity, or something else completely.
Imo - it's football! I'm not sure whether it brings out the worst in people or just attracts more than its fair share of idiots but it's always been the same.

You never see riots, trashed city centre's, violence and death associated with other sports - only football. Never could stand the game myself and I'd be quite happy to see it banned.

Rugby = A thugs game played by gentlemen
Football = A gentleman's game played by thugs

Sunday rant over - wine o'clock soon

According to wikipedia Sports riot - Wikipedia it isn't just football/soccer. I'd assume it's the sport most people feel particularly passionate about in a particular country.

In the UK my impression is hooliganism is most connected with violence in people's minds. But in Canada, I'd say more violence in ice hockey. MOO

I don't know about France but my impression is that a certain segment of population is happy to riot there, about politics and possibly sports. MOO

The number of people injured when a car drove into a crowd during Liverpool FC's Premier League title parade has now increased to 109, police have confirmed.

Paul Doyle, 53, appeared at both Liverpool Magistrates' Court and Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, where he faced seven charges including wounding with intent, causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, attempting to cause GBH with intent, and dangerous driving.
The court heard that the dangerous driving charge related to Mr Doyle's home street of Burghill Road, Water Street, and other roads in between.

I think the decision of his family to decamp - possibly temporarily, maybe permanently - has more to do with intrusion from the press than any perceived physical threat ...

I agree. I think their lives sadly could be made very unpleasant for them for quite some time if they stay in the family home.
I would move personally but that’s just me.

Four of the victims of the Liverpool parade crash have been named for the first time after reporting restrictions were lifted by a court.

The two men and two women are among the 109 people who have been reported injured after a car was driven into crowds at Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade last week.

Doyle is charged with another count of wounding with intent and a second count of attempted GBH, which both relate to children, for whom reporting restrictions remain in place.

there is more detail at the link..................

Think Paul Doyle is in court tomorrow for a plea hearing. Pretty much guaranteed he will plead not guilty, judging by his head shakes at previous court appearances.

Just adding this in for the record. As @bbsaz said above, the plea hearing is tomorrow

Liverpool FC parade suspect Paul Doyle appeared in court today.
The 53-year-old, of Burghill Road in West Derby, faces a series of alleged offences after a car was driven into crowds of fans during the Reds’ Premier League title celebrations in Liverpool city centre.

Doyle has been charged with ;
two counts of wounding with intent, against 52-year-old Simon Nash and an 11-year-old boy,
two charges of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, in which the complainants are named as 66-year-old Christine Seeckts and 77-year-old Susan Passey,
two of attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm upon 18-year-old Ethan Gillard and a 17-year-old boy
and dangerous driving.

His case was listed before Liverpool Crown Court this morning, Tuesday, for a case management hearing.
Doyle, wearing a grey t-shirt and glasses and sporting short, slicked back dark hair, spoke only to confirm his name and sat taking notes with a pen and paper during proceedings while appearing via video link from prison.

The Honorary Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC further remanded him into custody
ahead of plea and trial preparation on August 14.

His trial remains listed before the same court in November 24, 2025.

Yes it’s tomorrow.
Let’s see what gives.

Court listing for tomorrow. Might not be him as his name has been redacted for some reason. And the hearing afterwards is for... another person some people might be familiar with!

Ah, I hadn’t kept up with any repercussions for his ongoing mission to prove how unpleasant he can be.

His kids were at my kids school. His wife seemed lovely and I only saw him once at the school, where he joined in the parent race on sports day and went flying, did a full Rolly-Polly. Couldn't have happened to be better idiot

Oof, he's been hit with a load more charges. Plea hearing delayed for a fortnight to give him time to digest the 20plus new charges (including 2 babies under 1)

Which idiot are we referring to here - the footballer?

He now faces a total of 31 counts, including 23 further assault charges and one count of affray.

Six of the new offences relate to children, including one six-month-old and one seven-month-old, Liverpool Crown Court was told at a hearing on Thursday
