UK - Car drives into pedestrians at Liverpool FC victory parade. Man detained, 26 May 2025

Snipped from the live blog.....

“Shortly afterwards, the defendant’s friend sent him a further message, asking whether he, the defendant, wanted Dave Clark and his family to walk anywhere.
The defendant informed the system that he did not want to reply

Dave Clark sent Paul Doyle a message to say that the defendant might find the area where the family was, which was in the area of Castle Street, blocked.

And that one piece of evidence is what, to me, condemns him absolutely. He could easily have parked further up the city centre and collected the Clarks in safety.

adding link for clarity

In addition to it being very fortunate that no-one was killed in this incident, I think it's also a very fortunate that no-one else was in the car with him at the time his outrageous driving unfolded, as he would have also put those people in incredible danger too.

It seems that he was in such an apallingly destructive mood that no-one would have been able to calm him down and stop his his rampage or its' consequences.

So how long might he get? I think the most serious charges he faces are GBH with intent. These are the sentencing guidelines that the judge has to follow. The start point for the highest culpability and most serious harm is 12 years, with the maximum being 16 years. But he's charged with so many counts, will the judge decide that some sentences will be served consecutively, rather than concurrently?

Very rare, almost unheard of for sentences to be given consecutively

Has he got substances problem?

Because, let's be honest,
this rage didn't appear out of the blue IMO.

Is it behavioral pattern?

Previous convictions?
Like
DV, road rages, unruly behaviour in public??

Sounds similar to steroid rage, tbh.

I don't think 16 years would be enough for the damage he caused. I think there are multiple aggravating factors that will increase the sentence. The fact he hit over 100 people including babies, children and the elderly, plus I think one was a police woman and one was definitely a paramedic. Also, he had several chances to stop and just carried on. Then he lied at the police station, trying to blame the fans, and didn't plead guilty till the last possible moment.

I don't know how anyone can consciously drive into people. I can't even drive towards a pigeon when one stands in front of my car,

Other aggravating factors:

  • Offence committed against those working in the public sector or providing a service to the public or against a person coming to the assistance of an emergency worker
  • Offence was committed against an emergency worker acting in the exercise of functions as such a worker
  • Presence of children

Agreed.
Well into double figures I’m guessing.

Horrific injuries. So many people with broken bones. I'm thinking (hoping) it's going to be 25 to 30 years.

But then, what he's done is a very rare, almost unheard of crime.

The thing is, under the sentencing guidelines, the maximum sentence he can get for one offence of GBH with intent, after taking into account all the aggravating factors, is 16 years. In theory, the maximum sentence for GBH with intent is life, so I wonder if it'll be life with a minimum of 16 years, which would mean he actually served 16 years behind bars, rather than being let out on licence after 8.

I think it will be around 20years, give or take. The impact statements really bring home the damage he caused to so many people, physically, mentally, financially etc...

  • #252
The victim impact statements we have heard so far are horrendous and will continue again tomorrow.
Apart from he’s “ sorry “ mitigation scant here.

I still can't believe there were no fatalities. And no one left in a vegetative state or survived but now living life as a paraplegic, for example.

What speed did he reach, do we know?

Don't think it was very fast. Not that it's needed to cause serious injury or death.

As yourself, I'm amazed there were no far more serious injuries or fatalities.

So, my guess for the sentence is 12 years plus. Perhaps up to 16.

I'm not too convinced it'll go much beyond that. I know there were lots of aggravating factors but this isn't attempted murder or anything.

I've been wrong before, however!
