Charley Gadd: Police search river in missing student inquiry

Police are searching a river as they investigate the disappearance of a student who went missing in Manchester.

Charley Gadd, 20, was last seen on CCTV outside Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre at about 01:15 GMT on Saturday after he ran off following a night out with his family, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

Officers confirmed they were searching the water near Salford's Lowry Hotel.

Why was he trying to escape from his father? What's all that about?
Does his father live in Manchester?
Hmmmm....
Maybe his father was drunk too? Also father states 'we, were out with Charlie which implies others were there too

His brother. Not sure if there were any others.

It was a family outing.

I don't think there's anything sinister about this one when it comes to circumstances of disappearance - he was with his family at a gig, he had a bit to drink, and either decided to or accidentally got separated from them in the early hours.

Hoping for a good outcome but it's not looking brilliant...

Been thinking of Charlie today. Posting before I go to bed. Can someone in the UK please update here if the search resumes Sunday? Prayers for Charlie and his family.

The parents of missing 20-year-old student Charley Gadd issued an urgent plea for information, as he has not been seen since the early hours of Saturday, December 11.

Charley is studying a film and media degree at the University of Essex in Colchester, and was attending the Warehouse Project in Manchester with his family in the early hours of Saturday morning when he ran off.

A CCTV image of his last known movements was released on December 13 after it was discovered he was last seen just before 1.15am on Saturday outside the Royal Exchange Theatre heading towards St Annes Street in the city centre.

Charley is described as a white male of skinny build, 5ft 9 inches, with mousy brown hair, wearing a red jacket and blue jeans.

Charley’s father, Jolyon Gadd, said: "We were out with Charley on Friday night and Saturday morning on the 11 December and had a lovely time together.

"We have heard nothing from him since he ran off and my wife and I and his brothers Bruno and Rufus are desperate for any news of him. We are obviously extremely worried.

"As we do not live in the area, we would ask local people and businesses to help us by looking in outbuilding, vehicles, bins, and anywhere else that Charley may have taken shelter to keep warm on Saturday morning.

"We really appreciate all the support and kind comments given by local people on social media, and ask that you please keep this in the public eye locally until we find Charley. However, we would ask that our privacy also please be respected at this time."

The Royal Exchange theatre and St. Ann Street is in the city centre, so that's where he was caught on CCTV, last known location.

But his route to the canal (or anywhere else!) surely should also be on CCTV too.
It's about 500m as the crow flies to the canal, and his walk there would have also involved city centre streets filled with shops and businesses, most if which would also have cameras too.

I live in Manchester and I really hate to say this, but I think it's likely he went into the water. The canal pathways in certain areas (particularly one that runs under a small bridge) are ridiculously narrow. I obviously really hope not, but it's sadly not a very rare occurrence in the centre. Praying for Charley.

If anyone is interested in tracking his route, this location closely matches the CCTV image, would put him travelling S-SW down Exchange St at 1.15am.

Could part of the reason drunk guys go missing near water so much be because they are vomiting, not just peeing as we think most often? That railing in the image on the last page from the news article seems like it would be very easy to fall over if you're super drunk and draped over it vomiting, especially if you're on the taller side.

Maybe it could explain some of these cases. Could it even explain suddenly "running off" - feeling ill?
His family in this case hasn't speculated publicly about why they thought he ran off, correct?

Charley's family must be completely heartbroken. I'm thinking of them and their Charley.

Looking through Charley's FB and related family links, his mother was going through chemotherapy a couple of years ago and Charley shaved his hair off in a Macmillan fundraiser.

Really is so tragic. And going into 2022 with him still not located.
