Something had happened to him, otherwise he hadn't to go for a medical check, IMO. And I'm thinking about the time and the location, which corresponds to the time/location of CL. Is a blind fitter counting as being from the building branche?

Yes! Creepy weird messages is very strange. location time, You can walk into terrible situations. His experience may not of course had anything to do with the CL disappearance,thats the problem with having so little details his text messages to his wife would perhaps offer a better insight but we are not getting any help there.
Why did he hire a car for work that day was that unusual?
He was able to text his wife with a series of texts that raised alarm but unable to text her to tell her he was Ok.
attempts to contact his phone were fruitless.
A trace on the handset suggested it could have been in the Acomb area
As you say he need a medical check ..that could possibly be for mental/physical reasons.

My initial thoughts were
perhaps he was an innocent guy in the wrong place at the wrong time and was a victim.
perhaps he had a call from someone who had to get out of York in a hurry
perhaps person/persons who had to get out of York took the opportunity to make a stranger with a vehicle and cash card under duress to execute this hence no mobile phone contact.

wasnt the guy from the Acomb pub accused of perverting the course of justice... I understand that charge that was later dropped, but I was never clear to what it was related.

Do we know if the repairs were completed on Claudias vehicle. Thought at first reading the story she had popped to cash point locally or to pick up her car. long time to be in the garage x
