To be fair, probably can't go round arresting people until you find something, even then, if you find a body, be hard to link someone with the body 12 years later I would think

To be honest, I don't care about the identity of the killer - find Claudia's remains

Depends what other materials are found with it (e.g. - macabre thought - to weight it down in the water, or tie a bag with) that could be connected to organisations or individuals.

Yes . I was thinking more in reverse..as in the searches occuring from information after an arrest
Which is why I think the search are after something was found

They have been lakes since 1969, apparently.

If it *is* the case that environmental works have uncovered something of interest, then I wonder if it’s her rucksack?

What does an environmental study / environmental works actually mean or entail? Does anyone know?

I agree, a significant find would have to be something fairly large and identifiable - you’d imagine something like her phone or straighteners would be too small/eroded by now to be easily recovered, and not specific enough to trigger such a search. Backpack sounds most likely, unless it’s remains.

I wonder if the 'environmental survey' could actually have been an undercover police operation, possibly didn't want it to be known they were looking in that location at that point?

I think it was probably genuine. I used to work for a local authority and our Environmental guys would head out for things like illegal agricultural dumping.

My first thought was DEFRA had got a tip off a local farmer was dumping waste in the body of water... they've tested the water, found it to be positive for something, then started to drain it and found something else and called the police.

Blue/Green algae is also rife this time of year - and if the water was on their watch list - it might have just been part of a routine check.

I wonder if they could have been using some sort of underwater sonar device or camera, looking for something related to the environmental study, and found something else, related to Claudia?

My first guess was her rucksack.

I hope this really does turn out to be helpful; but my expectations are low. Nothing else seems to have led anywhere.

I agree with thoughts of others although unless the people doing the survey knew about the CL case (possible of course) if they had 'just' found a rucksack or a phone they surely wouldnt think much of it in itself- you wouldnt surely call out the police for just finding basic items.....but if they found anything of significance yesterday her mother would have to be told promptly you would feel to avoid it being leaked and clearly by this morning she was none the wiser. A local has been quoted as saying police told him they could be there for 2 weeks so we just wait and see. As i said yesterday at least having her name in the limelight (far more this time incidentally than i can recall at any other specific time of searches or arrests previous) it can only help. With the passing of her dad there has been a genuine concern the case may get less and less attention as time ticks on but at least this very much keeps it back alive and hopefully make any perpetrator/s increasingly on edge

It’s still a very high profile case in York. If something was found with a legible laminate name card or something on, or in, it then I imagine the person finding it would be calling the police very quickly.

I hope I am wrong, but my expectations are also low. I wonder if the police will release any updates to indicate whether anything connected to Claudia has been discovered .

Admittedly the press are contained outside the search area, but I’m not seeing anything in photos (eg white coveralls, tents etc) that suggests any finds so far.

Yes, even without something as specific as a name card, maybe if just a rucksack someone might call it in if they are aware of the case.

I did wonder if it was something like an eDNA biodiversity survey of the lakes turning up human DNA in the water, but I think 12 years would be pushing it a bit…

The site is close to the main road between York and Malton. At least two of the arrested suspects in the second investigation had businesses located along this stretch of the A64.

One is very close,it seems.
