@Candytuft I don’t know about the specific canteen where CL worked but some canteens on UoY campus definitely offered evening meals in term time (and still do). I’m sure of this because I ate in Vanbrugh college canteen a few times after 5pm in 2008-10. Saying that, I agree that most shifts will have been early(ish) ones. But when/if she said 10 early shifts in a row, that could have meant ‘excluding weekends’.
Oh, right. They will all be different. Cheers.

I remember watching PL on a programme and he was talking about the £10.000 reward that was put up.
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. That money is small change among the types CL mixed with. Peanuts.
If anyone knows their types, they care not one jot about the likes of Claudia. Ok for a laugh and a bonk. But that’s it. Not friends at all. Neither were the women. Because it’s true that she was a minx, especially if they were married. I think she was incredibly naive. What she was doing was incredibly dangerous. I was told that PL was there when there was a lot of bantering going on. Jiggling her, joking about in an off colour way.
While her father was there ! Appalling behaviour from those men.
If she wanted to object, her reputation would have made it worse. She wasn’t respected.
“She was a knob, but she was our knob “. What a thing to say. No warmth there. Horrible turn of phrase about someone you are supposed to love.
Time to make a cup of coffee. Phew.
Spot on @Candytuft When they say CL was intelligent... well... she certainly did not seem to be streetwise and maybe she couldn’t read people well. Her sister gives examples of how hopeless she could be with men who took advantage of her. I’m not criticising CL, who is a victim and a very unlucky one at that. For very few equally naive, party loving, vulnerable women end up disappearing like that ...

I think I got some flak for saying this some. time ago....people thought I was having a go at claudia and it wasn't meant in that way at all....but she does remind me in her naivety of a family member with mild learning difficulties.

her mother said her sister was the academic one....ive always wondered if that was putting it mildly and claudia felt she was completely out of her depth in comparison.....I dont mean her sister tried to make her feel like that, but some middle class parents find it hard to accept that a child may have problems in this way.

luckily, my relative has been brought up not to let anyone take advantage ...im old enough to remember a time when young girls were encouraged to believe they needed to please men all the time without feeling insulted.

ive read that before about her father....is it true

Happy to explain. Who are you referring to @Popejohn3 when you say ‘them’? I was referring to the perps, whoever they are (known or unknown people). Do you mean those suspected by Major? In that case, it sounds like you too believe they’re guilty, but they deserve mercy if they come clean and express remorse. Sorry if that’s not what you meant, but that’s how it comes across to me.

P.S. Andyboy has replied and his suggestion makes perfect sense. I think they call it plea bargain in the US but I don’t know if it’s allowed by English law.
I went along with Andyboy
If you quote my post properly you’d know I was referring to the headlines not people

im just wondering how it would rank.....say you had some kind of drug dealer who was involved inn what was going on but not directly in Claudius death.

if they were to give information, would the police look upon them more favourably or would they take the attitude that the dealer had been responsible for many more deaths

Her father. Yes, absolutely.

So the police would have had a detailed account from PL since he was present but your informer hopefully would have gone to the police too ?

The £10000 reward was offered by crimestoppers very early on before most details came out.

And if true, it would explain why Joan L has steered clear of him, the Nag's Head and Claudia's female drinking buddies.

It is allowed, its known as turning queens evidence, ie becoming a witness for the prosecution in return for a lesser (or no) sentence for yourself. Quite rare i think but used in a few famous murder cases, and in IRA informants and the like.

I dont wish to paint claudia as a nicer person than she was because she was a victim, but I get the impression she had no idea what kind of emotional damage she could cause. within peoples relationships.

her. father sounds very odd to say the least

Would probably depend on how useful the dealer was to the police. In major cities drug dealing even at a high level is tolerated somewhat in return for drug dealers keeping there own version of peace on the streets.

I have no idea. It was years ago, not that long after CL disappeared. On that occasion when I was told about this, I was..well, not surprised at their behaviour. I mean the men in the pub.
I wouldn’t blame anyone for being frightened to speak to the Police in this case. But PL has not been thought of seriously as having anything to do with her disappearance. He’s not liked particularly, but I think it’s separate.
Another relative worked at the pub, years later. Not behind the bar. It was a good stepping stone career wise and good experience. And then he was away. I don’t blame him.

Ive heard it say that there is a lot more to PL than meets the eye!

I was previously unclear about the Friday off arrangement but this article seems to clear it up, suggesting she was *due* to be off:

Friend Suzy Cooper said: "She had Friday off work and I was looking forward to a couple of drinks with her. I got to the pub at nine but there was no sign of her. I sent five texts saying "where are you?' with no reply. I wasn't unduly worried because sometimes she would fall asleep after a long day.But on Friday morning I called her and her phone was still switched off. By now I had a very bad gut feeling. In her texts earlier on Wednesday, she was her usual bubbly self. I'm worried sick."

@Yozzer. This is very revealing. Why would Suzy and Claudia agree to meet at 9pm on an evening when she would have been up since 5?
Is this because Claudia was used to early mornings and late nights-We know the next morning wiuld have been an early for Claudia and her arranged night would not have been an early one.
So surprised Suzy didn't walk the few doors to check on her...

Looks like this was their usual routine. Something to do with SC's working hours going by this article:
Suzy last saw Claudia on Friday, March 13, 2009 – five days before she was last seen. She says: “Everybody was in the pub for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Claudia had been in the pub all day. “She was plastered by the time I got there at 9pm after work and I didn’t really spend any time with her. I regret it so much. I kick myself about that. I beat myself up. I would have said different things to her that Friday.”

ive no reason to really think this...but I get the feeling that this was when it was decided that claudia had to be kept quiet....either literally or by killing her....for whatever was going to take place a few days later.

it sounds as if sc told claudia off a bit....I would have said different things...not I would have spoken to her.

it may be that people thought. cripes, even if sc finds her behaviour unacceptable, we've got to do something.......there may have been big drugs boys there, putting the pressure on
