Now that's a million dollar question! What would provoke such an altercation between two high level, highly educated surgeons? I worked with two doctors who absolutely hated each other. They would constantly disagree about treatment pathways for patients,make complaints about each other. One saw the other as 'lazy' and so resentment and frustration used to boil over. But to actually stab someone? I wonder if one had found out the other had made mistakes or been negligent and was going to blow the whistle and so the other wanted to silence him. ALL MOO of course!

I assumed that Brooks had not worked as a Doctor since 2016. Maybe he has then.

I suspect Brooks didn't expect Perks to survive. I'd also expect Perks family to be aware of the hatred, so perhaps Brooks was prime suspect from the start.

[...] Four days later, Jonathan Peter Brooks - a fellow plastic surgeon and former colleague of Mr Perks at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - was charged with attempted murder and possession of a kitchen knife in a public place.

The 56-year-old made a brief appearance at Nottingham Crown Court this morning, where he spoke only to confirm his name.

No pleas were entered and Brooks, of Southwell, Notts, was told to appear again on May 28.

A trial date was set for September 27.

Mr Perks, who lives in the village of Halam, Notts, with wife Beverley, 68, and one of his four kids, was "not yet in a condition to provide a formal account".

As well as attempted murder and possession of a kitchen knife in a public place, Brooks is accused of three counts of attempted arson with intent to endanger the lives of Mr and Mrs Perks, and their son Henry.

A doctor accused of attempted murder has had his custody extended ahead of his trial next year.

Brooks was unable to appear in court as he has tested positive for Covid - the court heard that he had been taken to the Queen's Medical Centre for treatment but returned to Nottingham prison on Wednesday, October 6.

Presiding over proceedings, Judge Dickinson QC said: "The defendant is unable to attend because he has tested positive for Covid, so he can neither be present in person or be moved around the prison to the video link room."

Judge Dickinson QC said: "Following careful consideration of submissions of the prosecution and defence, custody will be extended to February 4 2022.

"Written reasons will follow - it would not be helpful or appropriate to give those reasons now."

The trial is set for January 31 next year and there will be another pre-trial hearing on December 10 2021.

I currently work in NHS and I am currently experiencing bullying. Not the first time either. I found this article particularly interesting, especially the comments from NHS staff at the bottom!! Some of what goes on people would be horrified by...

It's interesting to note that defendant is representing himself and was definitely not in attendance on the first day and maybe day two also?

Brooks is expected to cross examine five witnesses! Given the history this is, shall we say, 'unfortunate'. It all shows a controlling/power narrative at play.

Brooks may not choose to give evidence himself when the time comes! In which he cannot be cross-examined either.

The forensic evidence does appear compelling though.

So it looks like I was kind of on the right track with motive. I've seen this kind of deep hatred alot between doctors/surgeons who work closely. It would be interesting to know what the disaplinary investigation against brooks is for? Although, I doubt we will ever find out...especially with the NHS cover ups @Whitehall 1212 ...I've actually left the NHS now and feel so much better for it.

I am wondering why this trial appears to have stalled after the first couple of days last week? It has not been listed at Nottingham Crown Court since!

This case has been proceeding, it just wasn't showing on the court listing service I used (past tense - now sacked)

Brooks apparently attended his trial on Wednesday 20th July.

The jury were told, in evidence from his wife, that Brooks had been quite depressed.

Mrs Brooks telephoned police to report him missing after she found blood in the garage, on the night of the alleged offences.

At the time police were dealing with the assault on Mr Perks. They identified the common link and proceeded to Brooks home address to secure the scene.

Police found Brooks a short time later. He was taken to hospital for treatment and arrested whilst there.

Today (Thursday 21st July) the court heard from Consultant Surgeon Adam Brooks (no relation to the defendant), who, together with mefical colleagues, saved Mr Perks life.

He asked the witness, who is a surgeon, if he had ever had any concerns about him - presumably in reference to the disciplinary matter. I wonder if he's trying to show that he had no motive because he was confident that he would be cleared in the disciplinary.

Maybe, but there isn't an offence in English criminal law that requires a motive to be shown for a conviction.
