I think you might be right, describing her as a menopausal woman doesn't sound like something a man would write

I'm not sure about that ( though did not see this description in context, so this could be completely off tangent)

My point being that many many times my ex- husband would throw PMT, hormones or Menopause into the mix if we were having a disagreement!
Men can use these terms in a derogatory way.

When I wanted a divorce after 25 years of marriage my husband & my own parents & brother, discussed the possibility of a brain tumour, to account for my "personality change".

I did not have "women's problems" or a brain tumour.
I did not want to remain married to him, for my own, very valid, reasons.
I am now very happily single.

I agree Bethan. A friend of mine had a partner ( now thankfully ex ) who was very like this. He would make comments which were derogatory about her, but would then try to make it sound as though it was all in jest - always trying to qualify his original comment with I was only joking, where's your sense of humour etc....

When eventually, we, her friends got tired of this, we began to do the same back to him. He took offence and tried to persuade my pal to no longer associate with us.

Oh this totally resonates with me too.

Meaning that, if Helen was expressing dissatisfaction with the relationship, her partner may have labelled her as "menopausal"

A lovely tribute from Helen's brother, John, posted on the Planet Grief blog.

My sister loved writing from an early age and this blog Planet Grief was her way of restarting that writing following the traumatic and tragic loss of her husband John. Written from the perspective of a widow, Planet Grief has been (and I hope will continue to be) a valuable resource to those who have lost their partner and seek support through dark days.

I have read every single one of the comments posted here and wish to thank each and every one of you for them. They are all much appreciated.

Helen’s writing style was very much a reflection of her persona. If you felt you knew her despite having not actually met, then let me assure you she was in life as she appeared in print. Helen was witty and intelligent and even in times of great distress her humour lifted both herself and others above the tears.

Helen was exceptionally unlucky to lose both John and her own life in different and tragic circumstances. However, despite those tragedies I think her mantra 'It will be alright in the end, I promise you' remains an enduring message from her to us all.

My best wishes,

John

Remembering Helen Bailey
By Kelvyn Gardner
August 22, 2016

LIMA UK md Kelvyn Gardner leads the tributes to the licensing agent and children’s author.

When I came into the licensing business more than 30 years ago, there were already a handful of UK licensing agencies pioneering this work.

One of them was Patrick Sinfield, PSL for short. The tragic death of my friend, Helen Bailey, has brought those early licensing days back, sharply in focus.

Chris Patrick and John Sinfield were already well on the way to consolidating their business as a significant player when Helen went to work for them in 1987. At the time Helen was ‘between careers’ I guess she would say, in her winningly self-deprecating style. I reckon she already had ambitions as a writer even then, but she’d previously flirted with science and medicine.

She was, I guess you’d say, a bit of an all-rounder, probably the model for the typical, effective licensing executive of today. Right away Helen fitted the PSL style, especially John’s wry humour. Any meeting with Helen and John would start with an exchange of ironic views about the state of the world and of the licensing business. You simply could not meet Helen or John without a few laughs. Discussions were about business but about so much more besides, Newcastle United and Geordies in general often creeping in.

My business back then, Merlin Publishing, was very new, and in 1990 we submitted a proposal for rights in Nintendo, represented at the time by Helen and team. Against a challenge from more established players, Helen and John licensed us. We were delighted by their faith in our capacity to deliver. We had some fun with what happened next.

Knowing I was an Alien fan (PSL were agent for 20th Century Fox), Helen invited me to a screening of Alien 3 one Friday afternoon. At the end, I gave John and Helen an envelope containing our royalty cheque for the first quarter of Nintendo sticker sales. Neither of them opened it until Saturday morning. Tuesday morning, I got a letter of delight from them: the cheque was for twice the guarantee.

Nowadays that would have been a text message or an email, though Helen loved the formality of a letter, it should be said. You know, I’ve never, ever, received a letter like that again since. It wasn’t just the money, you see, it was Helen and John’s delight that their faith in me had been repaid. We had succeeded together. We’d joked, laughed and worked for that shared outcome. A partnership, a word so rarely invoked with any honesty these days.

Helen’s happy life was struck with a first tragedy when John, by then her husband of more than a decade, drowned on holiday. Helen, already established as a children’s writer, found her soul sparked in another direction, and her blog, Planet Grief, was much respected and admired by others recently bereaved. Last year the blog was published as a book, When Bad Things Happen in Good Bikinis.

I spoke with her and exchanged tweets often last year. She was in great spirits. When I tweeted ‘Just met two of the most uncooperative women you could know’, she fired back, conspiratorially ‘Do tell!’. It was the last message I had from her.

So we’ve lost a true talent, in literature and licensing, a charming, open, honest, witty and simply very human soul. Helen, we all miss you, and hope that you find the peace you deserve.

That's a lovely tribute Milly...thanks for posting it up.

I had Helen on my mind a lot yesterday, which would have been her 52nd birthday.

Well, here we are in October. Not long til he's back in court again. Anyone going?

Were the post mortem results ever given, or do you think cause of death might be revealed with this court appearance?

  • #889
Hi Milly
He has to go in person this time and enter a plea doesnt he .... anyone think he will plead guilty ? I think he will go for not guilty.

I have not been able to find any note of the PM results. Am thinking the information might be given during his appearance, or rather that the journos will talk about it afterwards ( for sure I bet they already know ).

Just having a scroll round to see if I could find out any more and have come across a page that Helen's brother has set up, fund raising for the Dogs Trust, in memory of Helen and Boris.

I know I am not allowed to put the link up here because it is a funding site, but it's easy enough to find if you think of just giving and Helen Bailey

Guilty. Not guilty. No plea. I want to know the reason why.

Remind me - was Boris ever found?

Is that so? How disingenuous if that's the case.

I did put a similar link up, back on another thread ( cant remember which one now ) and it was taken down and I was told such links were not allowed.

Oh, the irony!

I can't find it, as there seem to be quite a lot of people there by the same name. But I think it would be fair to assume that the ban must have been lifted. :)

Politely assuming that since the Go Fund Me page for Bessie was posted on the front page of the forum that its a rule that no longer applies?

I can't find the page through searches, I'll just go directly to Dogs Trusts and send an email along with it

I couldn't find a link for Helen and Boris/Dogs trust either so I'd be happy to have a link posted too :)
