That makes a big difference. Helen could stay hidden for a fair amount of time with that.

Are B&B owners naive enough to just take cash these days? What if the guest wrecks the place? Anytime I've stayed in one I've paid by card which proves who I am. I had some vouchers as payment for a hotel stay once and was also asked to show ID.

I suppose it depends whereabouts it is.. If it's a fairly remote venue, that doesn't have much business right now, then someone turning up and paying for a month, up front, in cash, might be welcomed without too much checking.

Having said that, she may possibly have access to a friend's property which would require no money.

I really don't think she is hiding out somewhere. What would she do all day in a B&B, sit in her room? That behaviour would seem very odd. A friend would have said something by now if they lent her their home given the concern by the police.

I think sadly she is no longer in this world, most likely by her own hands or maybe someone else's.

If she wanted a bit of time to be by herself and just think, then I could quite understand her sitting all day and just letting time pass, sometimes its a good way to resolve stuff. And, if she went to London, she could go out and about each day, no one would notice her there.

Re the possibility of flat or house loaned by friend. I was thinking along the lines of a friend ( or close acquaintance ) who has gone off somewhere for several months - say Australia or similar - and has said to Helen, if you ever need a place to stay, here's the key. Hence this person would not necessarily know that Helen is now missing.

Having said that, I still do worry that 16 days is a bit too long to make no contact at all, even if just to say I'm not coming home yet.

I agree. It's the media who have said foul play is 'unlikely', the specific words LE used are " there is nothing to indicate "foul play" in connection with her disappearance". This is probably quite true - no body, no bloodstains. They can't publicly talk about foul play until they have hard evidence. But that doesn't means foul play didn't happen. Or possibly an accident or suicide.

This whole idea that she would sneak off with a wad of cash and hide out in a bedsit sounds like something someone would say to try to get rid of nosy police.

I agree. Even if she hadn't seen any online posts or been aware of police involvement, she would surely have realised people would be concerned by now.

Mmm, I wondered same. It's the usual, isn't it. Also body language of the partner can give a lot of clues as we have seen on many previous occasions. Is it because police are treating it as a case of her having gone away of her own volition?

Perhaps I've watched too many episodes of Forensic Files, but I do believe police are never going to ignore the possibility of foul play, they would miss crucial evidence and come under immense criticism if that's what it turned out to be.

So Helen had access to a four figure sum of money in the house which she may have taken......surely whoever knew the money was there will know if it is missing? It was mentioned that she had more than a passing interest in starting a new life, so just maybe that is a possibility. With regard to paying by card for a hotel or B&B....my brother in law and his partner don't have any cards and only ever use cash, yet they manage to pay their bills and go on holidays every year. I am still hopeful that Helen and her little dog are safe somewhere, although I agree that she would know that family & friends would be very worried by now.

Not necessarily, especially for a writer. It's quite common for writers to go on a "retreat" - somewhere quiet and away from distractions to work on starting a new work, editing a manuscript or similar. Going somewhere different or unfamiliar can be an inspiration. She wouldn't just be sitting in her room all day, but working.

That said, her long silence does seem more ominous than that.

I have just been looking at the fb page that Helen's friends have set up, it seems that Helen had contacted a dog rescue before she went missing. According to her friends the police have a list of the last phone calls she made and the rescues number is among them. The rescue apparently confirmed this on a local news page and have put out an appeal asking if anyone local has taken Boris in. Of course there are various reasons for contacting a rescue but for me this does lend weight to the theory that Helen was planning to disappear or leave her home for a while. We don't know if Boris is with Helen or not, but I do think it will be easier to trace her if he is.

As far as I know the police have not released any further details about the calls Helen made. The woman that runs the rescue put up a post asking if anyone local had taken Boris in, but that post has now been removed. According to this article Helen's partner was out running errands when she left. Yes, I saw that comment on the FB page. Found it a bit strange. Rescue Centres do not usually offer a boarding facility, so it may have been to ask their advice re something. Perhaps something to do with Boris and travelling ?

With regard to not leaving Boris with her partner. Perhaps she felt it would be too much to ask, being as it was reported that he had not been well recently.

I did think that but, maybe she wasn't thinking straight and thought he would be better off without her. Her partners 2 sons were living with them, I'm not sure of their ages, they might help care for their dad.

I have no knowledge of cat or dog rescues but I am familiar with several rabbit rescues here in the UK, and they do tend to offer holiday boarding for animals that they have rehomed. For a very small local animal charity, seasonal holiday boarding can be a very useful source of income.

Police have made an appeal to Arsenal fans for information about missing Gunners season ticket holder and Royston author Helen Bailey.

A police spokesman said: “We are hoping Arsenal fans may be able to help in our ongoing investigations to help find Helen ahead of their home game with Norwich City in the Premier League tomorrow afternoon.”
