I didn't realise the trial had started until I heard a rather disturbing headline on the radio yesterday, I didn't hear the rest but good to see we have some detailed coverage here for me to catch up on.

The first witness this morning is consultant forensic pathologist Nathaniel Carey, who is taking to the witness stand now. Dr Carey says he carries out research into a whole range of unexplained deaths, including murder. The job involves carrying out postmortem examinations and giving evidence at courts of law.

[FONT=&quot][h=3]Body in cesspit[/h]As far as Dr Carey was aware, Helen Bailey was last alive on April 11, 2016, and her body was finally discovered on Friday July 15, 2016, immersed in a cesspit.
Jurors are looking at photos of the cesspit in the jury bundle. In one of them, Helen Bailey’s arm can be seen sticking through the top of the cesspit. Dr Carey said he knew that care was taken to extract Helen’s body out via the side of the cesspit, to not damage the body.

I agree LozDa. I already had doubts about his first wife's COD, and now we're hearing how much planning went into this and therefore more about the nature of him, it is even more pertinent that this may be his MO.

I've thought more on his motive for killing Helen, and I'm drawn back to the time we know at least he started to set his plan in action. January. And January was when Helen hinted in her blog that she was getting cold feet. I think it is linked, and he didn't want to take the risk that Helen at any time could change her POA and her will without him knowing.

I agree. And that links in with him asking, twice, during the time that Helen was * missing* to see her Will. As far as I know, he would not be allowed to do so.

[FONT=&quot][h=3]Decomposition was slowed[/h]Helen Bailey’s body was immersed in human excrement from April 11 to July 15. Dr Carey said the effect this has on body tissues would mean that decomposition would occur, but because this was a well in the ground, decomposition would not advance particularly rapidly. Complete immersion in water would also limit oxygen to the tissues, slowing decomposition somewhat.

[FONT=&quot][h=3]Body was fully clothed[/h]Dr Carey tells jurors: “Exposure to the air with a high load of bacteria from the sewage material present would cause decomposition rapidly when she was extracted.”
Helen’s body was fully clothed, but she wasn’t wearing any footwear, the court is told. Clothing was well preserved but some damage had occurred from being immersed in the excrement substance. July 18 - a postmortem was carried out on Helen’s body by Dr Carey. Helen was 174cm from heel to the top of the head, and weighed 76kg.

Interesting. I read in MSM last night that toxicology showed Helen had been taking Zopiclone since at least February 2016.
I will try and find it again.

Yes I read that too and the report said this was the same time that it was first prescribed to IS.
Could have been prescribed for him after the op, to try and allow him to get some sleep and stop worrying about the results ...or could have been prescribed before the Op, for the same reason.

Dr Carey added: “None of these marks crossed the threshold in my mind that constituted definite injuries in life. “I couldn’t convince myself that these injuries were made pre-postmortem.”

I know it shouldnt make any difference and I sincerely hope it does not, but I would really like to know the male / female ratio of the confirmed Jury now.

[FONT=&quot][h=3]No evidence of head injury[/h]Dr Carey said there was no evidence of bruising around Helen’s neck, relying on examination of the tissues around the neck itself. Dr Carey said Helen’s scalp was well preserved, there was no evidence of bleeding to the scalp and no other injury to her scalp. Her skull was not fractured, her brain was decomposing and was ‘semi-solid’. It was possible to exclude hemorrhaging inside the head. There was no evidence of any injury, Dr Carey said.
