Dr Carey said Zoplicone was in Helen’s system for a number of months, but he cannot say whether Helen took the drug herself. “That is for the jury to decide”, he tells the court.

I can’t say when she died, and I can’t date it to April 11,” Dr Carey says, during questioning from the defence barrister. “It’s possible she could have been put down the well in an unconscious state, that would be another possibility to consider. I wouldn’t be able to completely exclude that. It’s so scenario dependent.”

[h=3]'It seems it was likely she died at the hands of a third party'[/h]Dr Carey confirms there was no bruising to Helen’s face, no facial fractures, and there was nothing damaged at all. “This was not a case of a violent physical assault that had caused deep bruising or fractures”, he said. “Not only was Helen concealed by a third party, but it seems it was likely she died at the hands of a third party by some means.”

[COLOR=#141414][FONT="][h=3]No evidence of a struggle[/h]There was no evidence of struggle or of injury to this particular body. No obvious bruises from gripping, or so on, Dr Carey said. If Zoplicone is taken in conjunction with alcohol it increases its effect. This would be similar to a ‘date rape drug’, Dr Carey said. It was however, not possible to tell whether there was alcohol in Helen’s system due to the decomposition of her body.

If someone was sedated, smothering would show little signs on the body, he said. That is the end of Dr Carey’s evidence, he has now left the witness box. [h=3]GP giving evidence[/h]The next witness will be Dr Afshan Kahn, the court is told. She is a GP, who worked in a Hertfordshire surgery last year. As of October last year, she was employed as a medical practitioner for the previous eight years. She qualified as a doctor in 2001 and had been employed at Ashwell Surgery since July 2015. The surgery had a system for storing medical records, called System One, the court was told. Her last contact with Stewart was in January 2016. She met Stewart in January, and this was the only time she ever treated him. The consultation she had with Stewart on January 23, 2016, lasted just 10 minutes.

Where I was lodging my horse there was an old septic well for collecting cow poo not in use any longer. I rescued a cat who fell in it but the vet had to put him to sleep because of the toxins he swallowed and inhaled. Just an old memory that just came back

[h=3]'He was finding it difficult to sleep'[/h]Dr Afshan Kahn: “When he came to see me he was reporting that he was finding it difficult to sleep. The record showed that he had previously used Zopiclone, and it had helped him.
“Zopiclone is a medication frequently used by GPs to treat sleeping disorders. It’s a very mild medication and usually the first drug we offer to patients who complain about sleeping issues.” It is usually dispensed in doses of 3.75mg or 7.5mg, she tells the court.

[h=3]'Stewart had previously been supplied Zopiclone'[/h]On August 17, 2010, Stewart had previously been supplied zopiclone, at a dosage of 7.5mg. He also had the same dosage in June 2005. “In terms of dosage, body weight is taken into account and as a larger person, it seemed to me that the higher 7.5mg would be likely to be more effective than the smaller dose. “7.5mg is a normal dose for an adult.The 3.75mg dose we would use for a really frail or elderly patient.”

Sounds like a very short cross examination by the defence counsel, because the next reports are about the next witness for the prosecution. Dr Afshan Kahn who prescribed the Zopiclone for Ian Stewart in Jan 2016.

[h=3]Stewart prescribed drugs in January, 2016[/h]“In January 2016 I supplied the same dosage as before for Stewart, for a 28-day period.
“I gave the defendant some safety advice for potential side effects of the drug, if he felt extra drowsy he shouldn’t drive or operate machinery.
“I also saw he suffered from another medical condition, so I would have emphasised this safety advice. The 7.5mg dose of Zopiclone is dispensed in 28 tablets, with one tablet to be taken every night,” Dr Kahn tells the court.
