Next witness is Detective Constable Jonathan Lockwood

The next witness is Detective Constable Jonathan Lockwood, who is part of the Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Major Crime Unit.

He says on April 21 last year, he was working on the investigation into the disappearance of Helen Bailey. He says on that day he went to the house of Stewart, and Stewart was there with a friend of his.

“Stewart made it clear he wanted his friend to accompany him on some occasions while we were talking to him.

“On April 22, Stewart had called Hitchin Police Station and wanted to speak to me. I went to his home address.

“When I arrived there were vehicles in the driveway. There was a tanker style lorry there to empty a cesspit, police vehicles, and fire rescue vehicles.

“Stewart was very stressed and very anxious. He was upset and pacing the floor in the hallway.

“There was also a dog search taking place. Someone was emptying the septic tank in the garden area.

From earlier: “He said if ‘Helen does come back, I don’t want to be with her anymore’."

What a strange thing to say...?

And, although this was 25 days since Helen had been missing , he says that she has been missing for 10 days

Stewart mentioned missing items

Dc Lockwood said on April 23, Stewart sent him a text saying ‘any news?’

“There was conversation about an image of someone at Morrisons - he was adamant he had been shown an image of a woman at Morrisons but I didn’t know anything about it.

“As far as I was concerned, there was no image.

“Stewart wanted to see a CCTV image he had seen previously, but we weren’t prepared to email that to him.

“On April 23, Stewart said he had found an iPhone belonging to Helen, a white iPhone 5.

“Stewart also said that a cream of Helen’s was missing from her bedside, she didn’t take medication other than vitamins, and none appeared to be missing.

“He also said a yellow collar of Helen’s dog, Boris, could not be found.”

Stewart 'did not want officers to search in the garage'

Dc Lockwood said on May 18, police wanted to do a further search of Stewart’s home for electronic devices, but Stewart wasn’t happy with this.

“He said we wouldn’t find anything like that in the garage, they would be in the house.

“He didn’t want officers to search in the garage but did consent for photography to take place there.

“On May 20 Stewart asked if there was any news on the phone to me, he was calm.

“He said he’d felt calmer sometimes but when he did see something in the house such as a photograph of Helen, he’d become angry and upset.

“He explained that he was angry because Helen had not been in contact in any way, with anyone.

“She hadn’t said to anyone she was alright.”

He was trying to say that Helen was selfish for running off and hiding and leaving him in this mess :(

Stewart told police he was angry Helen "had not been in contact" after she disappeared. Stewart was "generally very anxious & stressed".

Police asked by defence counsel why they had not shown Stewart a CCTV image of a woman in a supermarket despite his repeated requests.

Dc Lockwood talks about Stewart's demeanour

DC Lockwood is now asked to describe Stewart’s demeanour in general.

“He was very anxious, very stressed. When we would talk about a neutral subject, such as furnishings, he was calm.

“If he wanted to talk about the day Helen went missing he would become stressed, anxious, and try to control the conversation by shutting us down.”

Ah yes - a kind of double bluff!

and yet, tying himself in knots with :
"He admits that Stewart was anxious even after he was told the dog search had finished at his house. Dc Lockwood told jurors that on May 18, Stewart refused to give his consent to allow a thorough search of the garage.

He said: “Stewart said he wanted to make sure Helen’s affairs were maintained in readiness for her return.”"

Wondering who this accompanying friend was also -so he did have friends.

Again IS has used the term 'Helen has not been in contact in ANY WAY' this is the same language that was used on the supposed note left by Helen. To me it is his language.

Dc Lockwood is cross-examined

Dc Lockwood is now being cross examined by the defence. He admits that in the two police video interviews with Stewart, he did not try to shut officers down then. He admits there were constant requests by Stewart to see a CCTV photo of a woman in Morrison’s, but clarifies that he himself was never shown this photo.

He admits that Stewart was anxious even after he was told the dog search had finished at his house. Dc Lockwood told jurors that on May 18, Stewart refused to give his consent to allow a thorough search of the garage.

He said: “Stewart said he wanted to make sure Helen’s affairs were maintained in readiness for her return.”

Dc Lockwood reiterated that there were two log-in attempts on Helen’s bank account, at 1.16pm and at 7.58pm on April 11. One of these, the 1.16pm attempt, was via a mobile.

Dc Lockwood said on one occasion, Stewart had asked for a photocopy of Helen’s passport, so he could use her passport number to cancel the holiday to Spain.

That’s the end of DC Lockwood’s evidence.

If they can see that the 1.16pm attempt was made from a mobile, would they be able to find what area this phone was in, at 1.16pm? Why have they not said what device the 7.58pm attempt was made from?

Assuming the body cam footage of the 7am arrest on July 11th will make it into the inevitable TV programme when this is over - would be interested to see his reactions when the game is up.

Remember the footage of when Sadie Hartley's murderer was arrested, she had not got out of bed yet- I have to say that was satisfying to see.

Jurors to watch bodycam footage from Stewart's arrest

The next witness is police constable Darryl Hancock, who was one of a number of officers who visited Helen Bailey’s home on July 11.

On this occasion, he was equipped with a body worn camera fixed to his chest area.

Jurors will watch that bodycam footage in a moment.

Pc Hancock said: “At 7am the front door of the house was answered by one of Stewart’s sons.

“Officers went into the house, Stewart came downstairs, and at 7.02am Stewart was arrested on suspicion of the murder of Helen Bailey, and other offences such as disposing of her body.

“What then happened, is me and another officer went upstairs with Stewart while he got dressed.

“He collected some medication from his bedside cabinet and then he was taken out of the house to an unmarked police car.”
