Yes, it doesn't tally with what we know of him- the Royston neighbours found him quite taciturn in comparison to Helen, from what they've said. And her friends and family met him only once, by most accounts, which seems strange to me for a relationship of, what, five years?

Why would he send her a text of just 3 kisses at 10:10pm 11th April?

What was his scenario at that time?

Finished eating Chinese takeaway with Jamie. Played his 'actor' role with his Son - now Jamie is in bed - and IS is left with his demons, his defence for his survival and another ploy comes into his head. Ah Yes - this will prove she is missing but I am not interfering with her request to be left alone.

His motto- One Life, Live It.

Except he appeared to only apply that to himself in the end.

Yes indeed. I wonder how early.
Departing at 7.15 from Royston would indicate an arrival in Cambridge at 7.45-8.00 am

so if his hours are - say - 8 am to 4pm, then even a stop off at AMs on the way home to collect his satnav, could still have allowed him to get back to Hartwell Lodge by 5pm - which would mean arriving home at the same time as IS ( if ISs times are correct of course ! ) and would mean them both being in the house for at least half an hour before IS has to depart to the bowls.

More time to talk and time enough for IS to mention that he has just found a note from Helen.

Brilliant as always, Alyce and thank you. The 'note' happened to come to IS's mind on Tuesday - but he has to say he read it on Monday. And his defence in not sharing this note with his Sons is that he 'believed' it to be in their private relationship - a difficulty with Helen. And as he thought further, overnight, his brilliant brain engaged into the note of her own choice of disappearance .. breathe and tell my boys ..back to them believing their Dad - just as they have all of their life. And for poor OS listening to latest concoction of Nick and Joe.
Slowly thinking makes him a Master, he believes, but tripping is easy when he is not the most able to fulfil 'calculation'.

from your link, am surprised at her description of Ian
"GGHW is a man who will talk to anybody and is one of the kindest people I have ever met, but his advice was to leave her alone."

If he would talk to anybody wonder why he didn't have much to do with her family and friends.

He sought to isolate her? Maybe he used excuses( sickness) when they had invites?
Everyone said to HB "Well done I am pleased you're happy again" but people , privately, were not keen on him so they got less invites?

yes it's the "talk to anyone" that surprised me. Confident enough to approach strangers. Was assuming his social skills weren't so great.

H&I press photos compared to his Flickr photos- he seems to have reinvented himself.
Slimmer, slightly smarter, freely smiling .

Maybe this socially gregarious Ian was the early persona he adopted ?

as for kindest man she'd ever met, I guess those of you who've read the full book must have seen some examples of his unique kindness in print.

Wasn't his first public message when Helen first went missing something along the lines of "Everyone seems worried". Which struck me as odd...if my OH was missing I'd have a lot to say about how I felt, not how "everyone" seemed to feel. I agree that not appearing worried must have been his plan, him thinking that to be less suspicious.

I've just read all his posts on the widow page and I've concluded this is a man with low intelligence. He's VERY poorly written. I think Helen made him feel emasculated, no doubt. She's incredibly intelligent and sharp, even her responses in the same posts as his you can see there's a world of difference between them. I really think Helen has projected this knight in shining armour onto this man because she was so desperately sad. He comes over like a dummy. I do not get it at all.

Also, this. http://planetgrief.com/2012/06/11/good-samaritans/ see his response in the comments.

She was a strong minded person who did what she wanted. He obviously couldn't handle that.

The lyrics posted on that thread by Helen - Life Must Go On - are just desperately sad to read now.

Yes it is like 'everyone is giving the impression of being worried'

Odd

I was so disappointed that they weren't able to proceed today... the people involved must feel that multiplied many times over.

In fact as I had missed the whole weekend of comment on here, being away from my PC and an antiquated person who still hasn't got a smartphone, tablet or laptop, I read all those posts today and am very grateful for all the new thoughts and useful recapitulation, timelines etc - brilliant.

OMG, I wrote a post about this aspect earlier and deleted it as I thought it possibly a bit trite. What I basically said was that previous 'unknowns/convictions' and also criminal investigations etc. are left out of court cases so that the Jury can make the correct decision and also aren't 'swayed'. That information will be in the judges hands when sentencing.

I have said similar here several times and how I would not be surprised to hear at end of trial of previous convictions and/or acquaintances cropping up in the press telling stories of him and showing another side to perhaps the one HB saw.

I see people have been questioning the 'to tumble dry or not to tumble dry' matter. I don't see anything too odd in that. I have one and never use, drying clothes over the rads or outside in summer. If HB was an environmentally conscious person she would have been aware that tumble dryers are energy guzzlers, and perhaps preferred the 'old fashioned' way that being from up north she may have been brought up to do.

The question of how his wife died is something we may never know. I don't know if anyone here knows her family (particular the sister who has been most vocal on FB and seemingly most distressed by the loss), but it would be very interesting to hear their side, even if through another party or privately off board, as I am sure they are wary right now of saying anything publicly until this case has achieved a conclusion.

I can't find it now on a quick run through the posts, but someone(s) called IS 'unintelligent'. I would disagree. He did go to university after all (wonder what he read?) so must have had some of the old grey matter functioning to a certain level. I think, while he is maybe not a Mensa candidate, he is artful and clever in a practical way. He may not know much about art or fine wines or travelled the world to gain knowledge, but he seems able to apply himself to making things and in learning all those computer jigareepoos - which totally baffle me! - and lets not forget he can mend a faulty drain when called upon, but I think he is emotionally 'unintelligent' or at least is not one able to easily feel and express warmth and true emotion, but more 'acts' out the role of what he thinks is expected.

It's pretty stupid to kill someone for money and think you can get away with it by sticking them in a cesspit, as if you are never going to be found out, as if that cesspit is not going to be drained in your lifetime, as if you are not going to become a suspect yourself as the last person to see her alive etc etc. These are not the actions of an intelligent man. Whether he went to university or not (and I don't know how you know that) is neither here nor there really.
