Aargh. But that case (mentioned by Icemaiden # 579, sorry meant to quote) had only just started. Surely they would do almost anything to avoid such an outcome with a case at the end of four weeks?

It's fair dragging on this case..... [emoji849]

They won't discharge the jury. I expect in that case where the jury was discharged it had only just started.

It certainly is, so disappointing! Surely they can proceed one Juror down if needs be? I guess time will tell. And I was psyching myself up for IS starring role on Monday too, reckoned he'd be practising his limp and sobbing technique over the weekend, lol!

So 6-7 weeks was the time span given originally for the trial.

Next week will be into the fifth week. Also I have next Friday down as a "no court day" which we were told about at the start of the trial. Therefore it would seem like there are going to be few witnesses for the defence. My guess is the main defence witness could be a medical person to explain IS`s illness. I can`t think of anyone else for the defence.
In a previous post I thought of three possible factors which IS will present:
1. Ill health
2. Helen`s and his "loving relationship"
3. Sooty and Sweep (aka Nick and Joe).
Anyone got any ideas to add?

Agree re point 1. I think that will be the main argument - IS inability to carry out this murder and body disposal.

Possibly friends evidence ? I didnt think there would be anyone ( apart from immediate family ) but from Lit Ups info yesterday, it seems the friend who gave evidence ( Priest ) did try to say hello to IS. So there may be others. And perhaps they can also give evidence of spending time with IS and Helen as a couple.

The dynamic duo clearly have to form part of the evidence, although I can see him backtracking on them and saying it was just a wild idea !

Other than that, nope.

Who pays for all this? Is it tax money? I remember thinking when I was called for jury service how very inefficient the whole process was.

oh okay! called off not delayed.

The trial of the man accused of murdering Hertfordshire author Helen Bailey has been called off today after the judge at St Albans Crown Court announced that a juror's mother was terminally ill.

It's hoped proceedings will continue on Monday.

Helen Bailey's fiancé, 56-year-old Ian Stewart, denies murdering the author at their home in Royston last year.

I hope no WS-ers are there waiting!

So this means, no IS on Monday then? Tuesday for him?

This is why I always get a bit irritated when people complain about trials not taking up a full (9 - 5) day. I've never attended a trial, but it's obvious to me that there is a lot more to it than what we see or read about.

Oh a hell of a lot more. As well as sitting in court, the judges would also be doing a fair bit of work privately in chambers. Not necessarily on the cases listed for that day, but in preparation for others that are coming up in future. The courts are also very considerate towards jurors, they don't want them in a stressed out state, so jury trials don't normally start before 10am or finish after 4pm. They want the jurors to be comfortable with the time getting to and from court and going about their other responsibilities such as getting children to and from school or whatever.

Almost a certainty that they will carry on with 11 jurors. Several cases that I have followed recently have faced the same situation with one juror having to stand down and the case carried on. Eleven is a perfectly acceptable number ( well not to me, but then I worry ! ) to bring in a verdict.

Didn't need the money.
Took all 28 zopiclone tablets himself.

I think it's the tax man that pays for the court service. I found this interesting article on jurors.

And this is the legal aid situation for criminal cases:

I suppose if a defendant is on remand and not earning anything they would qualify for full legal aid cover? I'm no numbers person for working out the figures.

Try to look at it that it is prolonging his agony. Ha.

He'll have to rehearse his act a little bit longer. Nightmares. Sweats. Shakes..

Sooty and Sweep made me laugh, as have Ant and Dec, Morecambe and Wise, Burke and Hare and the Chuckle Brothers. And all of them more credible than Nick & Joe!

Interesting post. Yes, he'll be laying it on thick about his perilously poor health, being unable to work for years etc and making out he and Helen were madly in love and he was desperately excited about their forthcoming wedding. Which makes it all the more odd he had never told his sons they were even engaged! Oh and he hadn't bought her an engagement ring either. A friend of Helen's said he had bought her a ring but it wasn't an engagement ring. He received nearly £2k a month and had a six figure sum in the bank - why hadn't he bought her a ring?!

I only gave it a quick scan but means tested usually means they look at your finances.... I'm zonked with the cold but it would be lovely if IS had to pay all his costs himself. Especially since he's definitely not short of cash! So his defence will tell us next week anyway..... lol

And hopefully copious amounts of toilet paper needed as well - just to remind him of where he put Helen and Boris. Sorry, I hate that evil, conniving piece of filth.

What's the bet it was a haribo ring and he ate it?
