NEW CCTV footage has emerged during the desperate search for missing woman Karen Stevenson who was last seen more than two weeks ago.

A hooded figure matching the 42-year-old’s description was recorded on a family’s camera system in Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire, the day she disappeared.

Jane Finlay, 50, said her husband checked files earlier this week amid growing concern for the mum-of-two’s well-being.

She said they eventually spotted a person walking past their home and claims police officers told them it was Karen “without a doubt”.

Jane said: “It’s an absolute mystery what’s happened to her.

“As far as we’re aware that’s the last sighting of her. She looks quite calm in the video. But we don’t know where her head’s at.

“The police looked at the footage and said it was her straight away.

"There was no doubt. After that we had more police at the house.

The night-vision recording shows a hooded figure walking along McGregor Road, Cumbernauld, at around 3.15am on Saturday 19 February.

Police said they have had “tremendous support” from the public - but Karen’s family remain “greatly concerned” about her.

Officers were in the area on Saturday to speak to passers-by and motorists following a sighting on nearby Seafar Road.

To me it looks like a light, so may she is taking a drag on a vape pen or its the flashlight from her phone that she is covering with her hand and holding up to her face as opposed to holding her face itself - if you do it with your own phone you would notice the pinkish colour. Just speculation though.
Yes i agree, as a vaper myself, the way i hold mine, my hand sits in the exact same position next to my face, it could he one of the newer types of disposable vapes, you wouldn't see it in her hand as they're so small plus they do always have a light on the bottom of them, the one I'm currently using lights my chest area up a red/pink colour.

I'm fascinated by this case because of the amount of CCTV footage and the fact that it doesn't get us any closer to an answer. We see this woman periodically throughout this strange, meandering night, and yet it doesn't help us piece together what she was thinking or doing at all. My theory is that she was having a mental health episode. She wandered around, and at various points considered telling someone (the police station), but was unable to or decided against it.

I think sadly she eventually became hypothermic during her walk, decided to lie down somewhere secluded, and just has not been found yet.

Thanks for the insight, I have seen them, but didn’t realise they had a light on. They are really small, so wouldn’t be immediately obvious from the angle of the photo.
Hoping for some good news soon

Friends of a woman missing from Cumbernauld believe she may have travelled to Edinburgh amid reports of a potential sighting in Leith.

Karen Stevenson was last seen in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, February 19 after leaving her home in the Lairds Hill area of the North Lanarkshire town.

The 42-year-old was spotted walking towards a community centre via Brown Road and Fleming Road at around 2:55am but has failed to make contact with concerned family members.

Police Scotland has since been made aware of a potential sighting of Karen at the capital’s Ocean Terminal shopping centre, though officers stress it remains “unconfirmed” at this time.

It comes just days after relatives issued a heartbreaking plea for any further information on her disappearance.

Edinburgh police 'made aware' of potential missing Cumbernauld woman sighting

In some ways it’ll be good if she did end up in Edinburgh because it’s covered by extensive CCTV. Leith is densely populated, plenty shops and businesses with CCTV to capture pavements, plenty public transport with cams. The only thing I’m less positive about is that this area of Leith is also right on the water. That said, we still need confirmation that this sighting is solid.

They did some appeals at the football in the last few days (one at Easter Road Stadium near Ocean Terminal and the other at Celtic’s ground Parkhead in Glasgow) so there’s additional activity going on.

I feel very worried for this woman. It doesn’t look like she had a normal going from A-Z purpose for being out that night. Speculation and MOO.

I can't stop thinking about Karen and her family. What keeps sticking in my mind was what was her purpose for going out at that time? The facts we know about are the times and locations she has been seen on CCTV and what she was wearing. I keep coming back to the fact she had her handbag with her - we can see from the CCTV in the lift the strap/chain on her right shoulder. Now thinking of myself and what I take when I'm purposely going somewhere I will take my bag to put my purse, keys and phone in. If I was just going for a walk, especially if I was taking a coat, I would only take my phone and keys and put them in my coat pocket for ease. So this leads me to think where was she going that she needed her bag at that time of night or was it a case of grabbing it because it was quicker/easier and she had to leave in a hurry or was it just something she did when just going for a walk?

I take my bag everywhere - My brother always jokes about it because I’m like Mary Poppins

Her route is not purposeful - her route does not make any sense and she wanders aimlessly.

The road she was last seen is a main bus route into Glasgow, and also can lead easily to other parts of Cumbernauld (north carbrain, greenfaulds, ravenswood etc) hopefully the police are still out there but I haven’t saw much activity this week

It’s great the new cctv was found

RED Circle - CCTV from Lift at cumbernauld town centre confirmed at 2.44am, this leads to a bridge over the dual carriage way and a rooftop carpark if going up. If going down it leads to Fleming House offices and another ground level car park outside the Antonine shopping centre - if the times she is seen after this are correct I believe she took the lift up and went across the bridge and to the roof and I will explain why. If she took the lift up it and walked in that direction it would be consistent with the times she was seen and how long it would take to reach these areas from that lift.

BLUE circle - unconfirmed rumour that she tried to access help by pressing a buzzer and speaking to someone manning the telecoms but not present at this building which is a police station. It is apparently unmanned after certain times of the night. There is not estimated time for this.

WHITE CIRCLE - Muirfield Centre.

ORANGE AND LIGHT PURPLE LINES - 2.55am - was seen walking towards muirfield centre near brown Road and fleming Road.

DARK PURPLE LINE WITH GREEN CIRCLE (near Mcgregor Road)-
Seafar Road with CCTV (doorbell?) Footage at 3.15am.

YELLOW CIRCLE- Lairds Hill, the location of Karen's home.

I think Karen was heading towards her home according to her route and not wandering aimlessly but then for some reason has gone past where she lives and was last seen on CCTV on seafar Road near Mcgregor Road at 3.15am.

Yeah you are right about Seafar Road it is a main bus route but at that time of the morning or even just on a dark night people do walk along the grass at the side of it when going from one side to the other as some of the alternative routes are via underpasses or through paths flanked with trees and bushes on each side which for a lone female would not be appealing.

According to the Stagecoach timetables there should have been buses from Cumbernauld terminating at Glasgow Buchanan St from 04:41 in the morning. From there you can easily travel onwards to pretty much anywhere. It’s a big and busy bus station, and it’s also in close proximity to Queen St and Central Railway Stations.

If it does turn out to be true that she went to Edinburgh, and we don’t yet know that she did, I wonder why that would have been her choice.

It's awful that some police stations are unmanned. Shameful really. It makes me both angry and sad. The one place you should be able to go to for help, and no-one is there. :(

We can only hope the police are checking bus CCTV for that date and time and maybe get another lead - every avenue could be a step closer to bringing Karen home.

Well, the fact she was a lone female on a long walk at 3am is not very appealing to start with, and the whole thing indicates she didn't really seem concerned for her safety at any point.

MOO.

Possibly, or at that time on a Saturday when the local nightclub that's 5mins walk from the lift she was in was just starting to get people to leave for closing time caused a lack of taxi services and a wait for upto an hour (this is a fact as I have unfortunately had to wait in the queue myself on more occasions than I care to admit) has meant that she couldn't get a taxi to take her to where she was going or she had no money and no other option but to walk and to try and take a route along an open well lit road.

I don’t know if it does necessarily indicate that she wasn’t concerned for her own safety. It could be that she wasn’t really thinking straight at all or processing risk, but it could also be that she believed taking that walk and route was the safest option available to her, for whatever reason.

I don’t mean to be persnickety, I just get a little touchy about comments made about women walking at night etc. plus there are other options to explain it.

Thank you for this.

I would want to go back to prior 1am and what was going on at home.

Was her partner and children there, or were they away? Partner especially - did he see her leave, and if so did he question where she was going? Had she been upset about something, anxious or preoccupied during that day/evening? Did she suffer from any mental health problems?

None of this we know, so hard to rationalise this seemingly odd behaviour in the early hours of the morning.
