Sisters dance with fairy lights in photo taken an hour before they were both brutally murdered by mystery knife killer

"At 2.30 am another of the party guests attempted to ring the sisters on their phones, but the calls went unanswered."

"Bibaa, who lived in Wembley, and Nicole, of Harrow, were part of a group of 10 people who gathered from 7.40pm on Friday for the birthday picnic in the 254-acre park."

"They were reported missing to police late on Saturday"

"But DNA from the killer’s blood found at the scene has not been matched to any profiles held on the national database."

"He said it was not yet known whether the women were initially attacked at the picnic site, or within the line of trees where their bodies were found a short distance away."

Thanks Robin - very useful updates

another snippet from the article

We have interrogated the phones recovered from a pond around 100 yards from the Valley Drive entrance and a similar distance to the hilltop picnic site.

Because of the items found in the pond, we believe he left the area by the Valley Drive entrance.”

That must be the small pond marked on the OS map just below Valley Drive.
Which seems to indicate that the killer did not go out of his way to find a pond, but just used the one that he passed on his way out of the park.
Also, that it was this finding which suggested his exit route to police - rather than a blood trail.

I just still don't understand, if they were reported missing late Saturday...why wasn't th park checked by the friends and why weren't they found.

If he knew that pond was there, in the dark, I'm betting he was a regular user of the park. Which suggests to me he either lived within walking distance, or slept rough there.

I can't understand that either. It's the logical first place to go and search.

So someone from the party tried to call them, l wonder if this was to check they got home..or why they didn't follow up. If l have a missed missed from a friend l and most people would call them back. Otherwise you would try again the next day, no? Probably reasonable explanation though.

Unless they did check the last place they were and they weren't there. I'm not sure you would logically check the last place though, unless they knew they were sleeping there..they aren't children. I'm not sure they intended to sleep in the park tbh. It's not the safest area and parks aren't really safe places anywhere after dark.

I get that, but there was enough alarm bells for whoever to report them missing. And IMO , the park would of been somewhere to check. They probably went to the sisters place that lived there, the calls went unanswered and I then would of thought someone would say, oh I'll go check the park.

''The group, which included Bibaa’s grown-up daughter, drank moderately and ate finger food, but did not have any cutlery.

Det Chief Inspector Simon Harding, leading the murder hunt, said there had been other groups in the area earlier in the evening and a continual stream of dog walkers.''

''The women were not sexually assaulted and there is no clear motive for the murders, say police.

“We are exploring all possibilities,” said DCI Harding.

He said it was not yet known whether the women were initially attacked at the picnic site, or within the line of trees where their bodies were found a short distance away.

''A knife used in the murders has been found but police are still searching for other weapons which may have been wielded by the killer.

The grass in the area where the sisters were attacked is now 2ft high and DCI Harding said: “It is a massive area to cover.”

''Locals have reported that a man in his 50s had been scaring women in the park in the weeks leading up to the murders and police have received more than 100 calls from potential witnesses, including some "notable sightings."

“We believe the attack was carried out by one male suspect at this stage, but cannot definitely rule out whether a second person was involved.''

So the knife was brought by the attacker it seems and not from a knife lying around from the after-party. I guess that changes the intent, and not an argument that got out of hand as I had thought previously.

Just some thoughts...

1. A person from the other group of people that were seen on the hill, they could have had cutlery. I wouldn't know what their motive would have been and seems unlikely to me.

2. A person who was stalking the girls, brought the knife with him and arrived at the park intent of killing and saw the lights from the sister.

3. A person who was annoyed by the noise they were making and might have gone to have a word with them and that had gotten out of hand.

I can't really think of anything else, I mean there's always the rough sleeper angle but as somebody else mentioned; surely they would have took the phones instead of placing them in the pond. Another would be somebody that knew the sisters but seems incredibly unlikely now.

Just because they weren't sexually assaulted doesn't mean it wasn't sexually motivated, I think that can go on your list too.

ETA: The FBI phrases it better than I have:

Sexually-based is a motivation driven by the sexual needs/desires of the offender. There may or may not be overt sexual contact reflected in the crime scene.

I think they need to find this man in his 50's, even if it's just to eliminate him.

Is it possible they had finger food, but brought a birthday cake and knife to cut it with.

I always thought there would of been a knife for the cake but surely they would of mentioned when they talked about the cutlery.

Wondering if they brought cupcakes, they are easier to serve and eat in the park, imo.

Makes you wonder if police have a Delphi situation where they have more evidence on the phone of the perp
this is what I’m thinking too.

Were the photos actually from the phone found in the pond or did one of the women send them to a friend or post them on her Instagram or Facebook? Can you retrieve pictures that quickly from a wet phone?

My train of thought is leading me to wonder if at some point in the evening someone had inadvertently taken a photo of the killer. Maybe he’d been hanging round the party? Did the police then try to trace everyone who was there and ask if they knew all the people in any photos of the party, thereby eliminating people one by one and being left with someone that no-one knew?

I'm leaning towards random psycho rather than someone who was irritated by the noise. They were unlikely to be disturbing anyone other than a rough sleeper.

Fryent Country Park Walking Route

click on the Ordinance Survey map link then scroll over the park - this shows the pond locations

Cags, have a look on this map...there is a small pond, located between Gotfords Hill and Valley Drive exit...
On the map it’s just below the line where Valley Drive curves round.....police said the pond was about 100 yards from Valley Drive exit, so this should be the one
