Any ideas why they shut off cameras briefly when sentencing Urfan and Beinash? I'm wondering if he made no contact orders for their other children or something. Does that seem like a feasible explanation? I know they were referred to throughout the sentencing remarks, but possibly something that will affect future contact is deemed as confidential?

No reaction from defendants as they're jailed
13:04

Helena Wilkinson
Reporting from the Old Bailey

There was no reaction from Sharif as he was sentenced, he looked down.

As he was sentenced there was some clapping from the public gallery, and the judge asked for quiet.

Batool looked as if she was about to cry, but no reaction from any of them apart from that. Malik had his head down.

The defendants were led out of the dock and down to the cells to begin their long prison sentences.

The judge thanks the teams involved in the case, all members of the counsel teams and the court staff.

Good.
And so they should.
The thing is whilst we are typing here there will be hundreds/thousands of children suffering abuse at the hands of their so called parents in the UK and the world over.
It just hurts my heart.

I had wondered why the cameras shut off. It might have been because comments were being shouted out.

Cheers and cry of 'evil' from the public gallery

There are cheers and applause from the public gallery as the judge passes sentence, with one person heard to say "evil" before the defendants are taken down to the cells, writes Henry Vaughan in court.

How long before they are given 'Jail Justice', I wonder ....
Only those convicted of similarly heinous crimes (NOT many of *those*) will give them any time. They will probably hoping that BB, US and FM will drop them slightly lower down the 'Watch Your Back' order. Because, have no doubt, there is a whole raft of different reasons for prisoners to be separated from the general prison population. From sex offenders to convicted police/prison officers. They are all vulnerable for different reasons, and from different people. There is a pecking order on the segregated wings, and the likes of BB and US will be the bottom feeders ....

Have a Great Time, guys ......

He's 43. By the time he's eligible for parole he'll be 82. Effectively, it's a Whole Life Order in all but name.
Hopefully he’ll be dead before then.

Last we heard was that Beinash was having long chats and playing cards with Lucy Letby.

It was reported today that BB is now best mates in prison with Lucy Letby!

They'll be held with the other lifers and not mix with the general prison population.

While this trial was going on, there were simultaneously also the trials for at least 3 other infants, Isabella Wheildon, Abiyah Yasharahyalah and Charlie Roberts - all killed by their parents/caregivers. It's outrageous.

I don't know about you lot, but whenever I see stories in the news about the goings on of infamous prisoners I always take the news with a massive pinch of salt as there's very little detail about who the source of this information is.

A life sentence doesn't mean automatic segregation. Lots of lifers are quite happily jogging along in general population.
Being brutal, it depends entirely on *who* and *how* you killed. 'Simple' murder of an adult is viewed (by fellow inmates) completely differently to murder of a child, or paedophilia, or rape of a child, or being a 'bent' copper, or other such vile crimes. Someone can be 'on the wing' with a pretty short sentence ...

It’s just abysmal agreed.
These little ones don’t ask to be born … if you find children such an inconvenience ( or insert whatever ) then don’t have them in the first place.
It’s not rocket science.

Just logged in . I'm delighted to see justice being served good long sentences bienash and urfan be in their 70s and 80s before release. And 16 years for malik with earliest release 11 years .

Unfortunately I do see malik and possibly the other two attempting appeals

The victory today is bittersweet as Sara lies dead in a grave and no amount of jail time will repair that but prehaps if those responsible in social services of turning a blind eye and acting with gross negligence are also punished instead of protected it might just help the next vulnerable child . Sara's death was just so avoidable . all the diabolical errors are shameful.

  • Sara's father Urfan Sharif was sentenced to life in prison for her murder, and must serve a minimum of 40 years
  • Her stepmother Beinash Batool was also given a life sentence for her murder, with a minimum term of 33 years
  • Faisal Malik, Sara's uncle, was not found guilty of murder, but received a jail sentence of 16 years for causing or allowing the death of a child
  • The judge said in his sentencing that Sara "was battered with great force again and again" and suffered "a campaign of torture"

As the judge said “take them down”, Sara’s father, stepmother and uncle were led out of the dock and down to the cells, bringing an end to a case that has heard weeks of unimaginable horror.

But it was Sara’s memory that lingered in the courtroom after they’d gone.

Her “unquenchable spirit” as the judge put it, her courage and her love for singing and dancing.

This has been a heartbreaking and traumatic case to sit through.

There will be many questions in the days and weeks ahead about what more could have been done to save Sara.

But for now justice has been publicly served.

I doubt that story is true to be honest.

Liz Hull (host of the DM Trial of Lucy Letby podcast) wrote an article the weekend before last and said Letby has very minimal contact with prisoners and even then very few prisoners. She is locked up for 23 hours a day. This wouldn’t really fit in with the story at the weekend of ‘playing cards with Batool on the landing’. Also, when Sian Hedges was sentenced earlier this year for killing her child, the media ran a story saying she was friends with Letby in prison but the story was completely refuted and the media later admitted it was factually incorrect.

Just been looking at the legislation and this is the relevant section for what would normally attract a WLO. I think the judge would need to convince himself that there was a sadistic motivation in order to apply one -
If years of sustained torture isn't sadistic I don't know what is.

The only real justice would be for US and BB to be subjected to exactly the same treatment as they inflicted on Sara.
