I think someone had eyes on the diary that weekend and some of the content was shared with another/others.
In my opinion one of those persons was greatly upset and angry by what they learnt and planned on going to confront SJL Monday.
I think the call to the POW by a female called Sarah was an attempt to warn her, after learning SJL had not been there yet she gave the landlord a tel number and asked him to tell SJL to call her when she arrived desperate to speak/warn SJL Sarah asked the landlord to keep her talking and tell SJL he couldnt find the diary and chq book.

We know SJL had a friend called Sarah and its my opinion that SJL had told her or she had learnt that she had lost her diary and chq book and where it had been found and plans to collect it.
I think the caller posing as a policeman was another desperate attempt by a male associated to Sarah to check again if SJL had arrived at the pub and by saying he was a policeman would underline the importance of the calls.

Unfortunately SJL never made it to the POW as the confronter had already made his move.
We know DH was obsessed with SJL they had never fully broken up.
We know he had finnished teaching sailing in Corsica the day before SJL went missing. (Skipper- suntanned)
We know he didnt have an alibi and wasnt seen for days after despite her disappearance appearing in the National Press.

Described as softly spoken but intense in the AS book I think DH warrants a closer look.

These are my opinions only
Some interesting thoughts re DH.

Further to this (and though it did apparently come from DL when she admitted to attempting to “buy” press interest - so should perhaps be viewed with some scepticism) - I did note the mention (AS Page 148) that “somebody had offered to come in with her (SJL) buying a flat and that she did seem to be looking at property beyond her means.”

To my eye that would make sense, but IMO it wasn’t a flat she would interested in, but more likely a property for conversion to flats, which could then be sold on or rented out at a profit. Her flat was on at £73k, Shorrolds (ideal for three flats) was on at £128k. Beyond her means alone, but within budget on a 50/50 split.

In other words, rather than a beauty and fitness business (which I suspect she may at this point have felt to belong in the past) she may have been looking to take the first steps from estate agent to developer. In such a venture, the ideal partner would be a general builder or, failing that a carpenter who could do the conversion work while SJL paid the bills. Within a year they could likely sell or rent out at least two of the flats, take a profit and move on to the next project.

Why would she care if a strange person reads it?

It’s not like her boyfriend found it. CV doesn’t know her and what’s he gonna do with the details call the News of the world?. I can understand completely if she had left it at her parents house or a boyfriends but a random no mark it just doesn’t add up. IMO

Isn’t this another DV theory that the diary was quite detailed in her private life?
Well she did certain things to keep her image clean where her mother was concerned.
Maybe she cared enough about her public image to want it back quickly.
She probably didn’t want to be labelled a slag, which is what happens when a man reads thing into what may have been in the diary.
The diary is a key bit of evidence which is why the police hold it.

I know nobody else agrees but I still would have the boyfriend in the frame. We know LE did a poor job investigating the case and we know Suzy was having issues with him and from all accounts cheating on him.

Now her cutting out of work to clear the air with him as he is being a pest I can why she would do that and if she did make up a fake appointment as it would be a complete embarrassment if work found out that she is was cheating on her boyfriend. It was the 80’s so I’m sure she wouldn’t want that getting out IMO

Then add in his weird reaction in the book

MOO
I wouldn’t say no one agrees with you, he has to be a prime suspect based on having a motive.
The police grilled him, and he was supposed to have an alibi, it depends on who provided it.

Good call, if you’re right and he had access to a boat disposal would be very easy.

Good narrative that accounts for SR, who are we looking at as a partner in this venture?

And a military pedigree apparrently did he know Norton Barracks?

Bristol has a strong sailing history and events calender did his sailing interest ever take him to Bristol ?

But this is a stranger it’s not like he can do any damage to her reputation. Let’s be honest if she was prepared to sleep around and cheat on her boyfriend she obviously didn’t care what people thought about her.

It seems like after she vanished the ex bf got chummy with mummy which is strange considering how he had been cheated on and dumped recently. He was around all that weekend as well and Suzy didn’t seem that happy about it. We know they talked Sunday night maybe he had wanted to meet up with her Monday.

And it might account for AL's comment to DV your never going to find her

He didnt show for days after her disappearance. Its very suspicious to me.

Can’t judge what reaction she might have had, horrified or couldn’t care less.
She was apparently reactive and not likely to take negative comments from anyone who may have read it.
AL’s chummy behaviour may be down to DL’s strong will and overriding desire to keep SJL’s image clean.
His reaction to DV IMO was odd, it suggests that he knows more and felt DV had ignored line of enquiry he was expecting him talk about.

Was AL the person that had eyes on the diary?
Did they spend the night together after going out Friday?
The more you think about it going public saying the diary and chq book was stolen would divert suspicion towards someone else.

Perhaps he agreed to meet DV to see how much he really knew.

Im always interested in outbursts of emotion particulary anger the person can often offer up something they wouldnt normally say when calm controlled and unchallenged

But if your AL why would you play along - it just adds more suspicion to me.

He was treated badly and dumped and cheated on so why would he play the loving boyfriend?

Maybe he is just a really nice guy but then his book reaction certainly comes off as very strange imo

When did Sturgis staff discover that the 37 Shorrolds property details folder was still in the office?

“A perfect combination of Hodgkinson and Hough - the former’s personality, the latter’s money - would make the ideal husband for her, she thought. If only Hodge would settle down and get a respectable job…” (AS P96)

Easier to modify the financial prospects of the former than the personality of the latter, perhaps?

The whole file wouldnt have been taken. Just an indiviual copy of the property details these were printed by the office junior JC.

What perplexes me is that for most estate agents who held keys had was a key book, when a negotiater took the key to a property you would have to sign it out this meant you entered the date sometimes the time the name of the address your and your initials on returning from the you would tick the box as key returned. This was usual practice to keep track keys that went out of the office who took them and ensure they had been returned. Its never been mentioned that Sturgis operated this system which realy surprises me.

Ah right - so it would just be one sheet from potentially several duplicates in a folder. No way of telling for certain whether she took property details or not.

Someone else had stepped into the frame AL's friend who who lived in the Bahamas for half of the year. Apparently she had spent a weekend with him.
SJL was upwardly mobile. Did someone feel spited by this move into what would have been a higher social circle.

Gaah. Just when you think you might be making some sense of the timeline (Shorrolds > Waldemar? > up the Fulham Palace Road (no the BW sighting wasn’t too far north) with a passenger > left onto Kenyon St > right onto Stevenage Road)…

… along comes witness MJ on Stevenage Road saying she saw a woman fitting SJL’s description waiting outside a house with a Sturgis board, then a 40-50 year old man with a suntan, dark brown hair and a briefcase arriving.
