I understand the point you're making here but would detectives really stay away from certain areas simply in order to appease a grieving and shocked mother's feelings?
Is that really how it works? I find that slightly hard to believe but you would know better than me.

A police enquiry would not be negatively influenced by a family member in conducting a thorough investigation and following any reasonable lines of enquiry.
However, the investigating officers may have been discreet about what they told DL and hence this may have impacted on open discourse with DL.
The key issue as I see it, is that other family members (sister - TL), friends and associates may have been reticent about saying what they knew, for fear of upsetting DL even more. Such reticence may have prevented other viable lines of enquiry from being identified.
Of course SJL may have compartmentalised her life so much, that no one was aware of her other associations.
