I understand the point you're making here but would detectives really stay away from certain areas simply in order to appease a grieving and shocked mother's feelings?

Is that really how it works? I find that slightly hard to believe but you would know better than me.

A police enquiry would not be negatively influenced by a family member in conducting a thorough investigation and following any reasonable lines of enquiry.

However, the investigating officers may have been discreet about what they told DL and hence this may have impacted on open discourse with DL.

The key issue as I see it, is that other family members (sister - TL), friends and associates may have been reticent about saying what they knew, for fear of upsetting DL even more. Such reticence may have prevented other viable lines of enquiry from being identified.

Of course SJL may have compartmentalised her life so much, that no one was aware of her other associations.

Re JC's dating video, I can't believe all these women thought he was attractive and charming.

First of all physically - he does look 'puny' as someone described him because his shoulders and arms look really small in relation to the small wooden chair and also in relation to the size of his head. I say this because back in the 80s the 'dall dark handsome' masculine look was fashionable. Also his mullet haircut and monobrow and unsmiling face.

Emotionally his answers are clipped, forced, disingenuous, controlled and don't seem at all spontaneous. His answer that he doesn't like people full of ego is nothing but psychological projection (of his own flaw onto others).

Creepiest of all, the way he is rocking the chair. I don't think it's a rocking chair. I think he was doing that horrible thing where people tip back onto the rear legs and tilt the chair back and forth. That's a physical displacement activity right there and it's a 'tell', it's extremely uncomfortable to watch. He totally creeps me out.

Anyway this is off topic. IMO focussing on JC is a distraction.

Are you either a restaurant or theatre critic? ;)

Such a review of JC almost makes me think that painting him as so loathsome and decrepit leads to the conclusion that no woman on God's earth would go within a hundred miles of him. Therefore he can't have abducted SJL!

Whilst I avoid the tail wagging the dog, when it comes to suspects. JC doesn't appear to have much going for him in terms of not being the only suspect.

I'm as keen as anyone to dispassionately explore any information/evidence that undermines JC's involvement, but being repulsed by him on the basis that he's a monster doesn't pass muster. He evidently did have a veneer of charm and a way about him that appealed to women.

My thoughts exactly.

Florists will record who sends delivered flowers. I wonder if enquiries were made of the florists within a certain radius of Sturgis, Fulham and Disraeli Road, Putney, for the personal and payment details provided by those that sent flowers within a certain time period? Definitely a reasonable line of enquiry.

Are you suggesting that this line of enquiry was not fully explored, as that would be somewhat remiss?

Also, if it was, then who sent the flowers?

I would like to point out that someone of JC's diminutive stature would certainly not have needed to push SJL's car seat back to it's furthest position. IMO JMO MOO

edited to add ~ yes it’s just my speculation that JC is smallish built and likely not of stature to need to push the seat back to its furthest setting

Of course that is just an opinion and not evidentially proven as far as we know.

Didn’t his dating profile list height and weight?

JC was very old fashioned by offering chocolates and flowers to his dates. Don't you think his chat up lines would be old fashioned too?

Would that make any difference to his overall appeal now that @Observe_dont_Absorb has thrown him under the bus? :)

Is that not a whole new thread? I've got some crackers :D

About a month ago I found his height listed as 5ft 8 somewhere official and linked it but can’t find it now. He was described by a fellow forum member as ‘puny’ altho not sure on what grounds. He does not look portrayed as tall or muscular in any reconstructions. Obviously his statistics must be very well known. If he was 5ft 8, that is only two inches taller than SJL who was a young, fit, sporty woman and it doesn’t speak to her being so easily overpowered or ‘kidnapped‘ by him in particular IMO.

Height and musculature have little to do with the ability to overpower another, when the attacker has perilous intent.

What counts is surprise, aggression, experience and the ability to put the fear of God into someone.

If they are holding a knife or gun to one's neck or head, then there ain't many that would fancy their luck.

Extreme violence or the threat of it paralyses nearly everyone unless they're either trained or experienced enough to counter it.

I fully agree to this aspect. Having worked in pubs and clubs including some seedy places I personally know it’s the violent person who acts suddenly, out of leftfield, and is armed ~ with even only makeshift weaponry (glasses, bottles, ornaments, even furniture) ~ is the most dangerous, doesn’t matter how puny or unfit or elderly they are. The element of surprise and the fact they often have no off switch and can’t be reasoned with all adds up ~ if that’s how they can strike terror in public, imagine what they do in secret / private

You've experienced it, so you know the reality. Many haven't so they have no concept of how things can flare up out of nothing, just from the element of a blitz attack.

As you say, in private a very dangerous person with intent can totally overwhelm an individual, unless they are skilled in self defence/martial arts, can read a developing situation, and respond accordingly.

Thinks of the guys that had no chance against Joanna Dennehy!

When something shocking happens people don't react immediately unless they've been in such situations before and can rapidly identify what is happening. It takes time for the brain to work it out as there is no previous experience it can draw upon. it's this reaction time which gives the attacker a huge advantage.

He certainly seemed to get lots of girlfriends, including the solicitor. He must have had something about him. He certainly wasn't a gym bro though but perhaps in the 80s that wasn't yet a thing.

I guess he fitted in the tall, dark and handsome category somehow

Agreed - I watched the Channel 5 documentary after it was posted here yesterday, and the reconstructions looked like they were true to real life - I assume the surviving victims were involved in describing what happened to them. The actor was the same kind of build as the real life JC, and portrayed his “blitz” attacks well, I thought.

Yes he must have!
You sometimes cannot tell people's charisma from photos or even video, maybe he had some qualities in real life that were attractive to some women.
