The bit I struggle with is how he had the time and inclination to scope out NB as a deposition site. His only opportunity to do so was while on day release from the prison hostel, when he was supposed to be working. Is this really how he spent his weekends? Or did he identify this spot much later?

I suppose he may have gone there at weekends & already had familiarity (?) If him.

He seems to have been partial to day trips. It was never bottomed out who SL cancelled on on early May bank hol weekend re: night away. Weekend SC murdered.

All this relies on a very lax hostel.

I still cannot reconcile with this tbh.

With his purchase of car & proven jaunt to Poole - regardless of responsibility for SC murder - he did seem to have a lot of freedom (?) Also home visits to Sutton Coldfield?? Presumably he could go anywhere at weekend in the car if back by curfew? (And that might be easily broken some say).

If anyone as read the CBD book again recently - he makes reference to a direct line of navigation of his victims to areas he knew quite well . Ie SB and possibly SC. pg 279. How would this analysis apply to SJLs case (he does not go to any analysis in these pages on SJL BTW)

Off topic of travel for a moment found this. Police thought a brand new navy blue handbag and new navy tights found near SB went missing were also maybe bought by her. Broadmead sold the brands.

“It is fairly significant dress, shoes & bag all blue”.

Just reminded me of SL being asked to wear particular Sloaney clothes by someone.

May be nothing.

Hi yes- need to find reference of who found the handbag (a delivery driver etc maybe but will find reference ) and he gave it to his wife at the time when he found it.

I was under the impression that SB bought a new dress AND tights/stockings, and had visited at least 2 stores?

Cannan made her put the dress on before he killed her.

But were any tights/stockings found with her body?

There's an episode of In The Footsteps of Killers with Emilia Fox and David Wilson that analyses the murder and comes up with a deposition site if memory serves me correctly. It's on C4. It assumes JC is killer. Not sure how credible you'll find it, but may be worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

I think it would have been difficult if not impossible to tell. If I recall correctly, the dress was only identified by its buttons, such was its condition.

Yes, the Grand Union Canal in Brentford.

A witness was adamant that he witnessed John Cannan deposit a suitcase into the canal 3 days after SL went missing.

The witness is now deceased, but it weighed heavily on him and he was 100% certain that he saw JC by that canal.

The police didn't believe him

Which doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

“The bag was found by a dustman on his round of Lee Woods, near Bristol…The dustman gave the bag to his wife as a present..He handed it to police when he realised it’s potential importance”.

The carrier bag originally holding new dress was found in footwell of BMW. Did he make SL change at murder site? It’s odd perhaps she wasn’t murdered in clothes she was abducted in. What happened to them?

Then I think of SB’s call to work & odd calls received at pub before SL’s abduction on radar & if any link to it.

Need to look back on that, on tights/stockings good point. As far as I know there’s no proof she bought anything else, police were asking around to this end. Presumably her cheques didn’t help (?)

The bag containing her new dress found in passenger side of JC’s car. If she was car jacked in the mini, she or he must have brought this bag inside his flat at start of abduction (& then JC later brought to Dead Woman’s Ditch area to force her to change on site?) If mid abduction is this likely? What happened to original clothes? There’s a lot to point her going willingly with JC perhaps at first, not least as no one at his flats saw or heard anything untoward.

What's interesting about SB's mini, is that her driver's door was jammed, and she had to get in and out of her car via the passenger side.

So IF Cannan abducted her in her mini, she wouldn't have been able to get out of her car via her own driver's door. She would be physically trapped if Cannan sat in the passenger seat.

IMO, there's a chance that Cannan already knew that her door was jammed, because he may have witnessed her getting out of her car via the passenger side prior to her going to the shops.

He then just needed to wait for her to go back to the car park, and choose his moment to strike.

I think I must be thinking of a different programme. 🤔. I'm sceptical about the GU canal sighting.

Paul Dettman, Crime Guy has the deposition site as the Thames. And why not the Thames? Or the waterworks on the other side of the river? Or the water south of Reading en route to Bristol alongside the M4?

He could've dumped her anywhere, with or without water. Assuming he had transport.

One thing I can't imagine him doing is digging holes in which to bury a body, or lugging suitcases about. Psychological games, yes.

No tights it seems - interesting. Just remains of dress (buttons) & her knickers, fantastic forensic work. Source CBD Prime Suspect.

SC murder took place on may 3rd, which just happened to be SL 25TH birthday. what a strange coincidence.

it mentions black knickers being found. with SB her murder was brutal and clumsy. evidence left behind. rock with blood and hair near her body, and underwear lying close by. JC did not appear to make any effort to conceal her body, but were supposed to believe this is the same man who made SL disappear into thin air 1 yr earlier.
