US threatens to annex Greenland - 2025/2026

  • #201
As soon as Mark Carney was elected Prime Minister of Canada, he initiated global alliances. One of the first was to pivot away from reliance on US for military. Until then, 75 cents of every Canadian dollar for defence was given to the US.

In December 2025, the deal was signed to procure defence supplies from EU countries, and to collaborate with the EU for defence spending, training and security. The US will no longer receive the bulk of Canadian defence spending.

Although not linked, Canada is also looking at procuring submarines and fighter jets from countries other than the US. As soon as the US waged war against Canada, it was clear that the relationship between the US and Canada is permanently broken. Canada is rapidly aligning with the global community, including EU, Australia and Asia. The US is unreliable and cannot be trusted.

June 2025
"The prime minister has said he's been in talks with European countries for months about closer defence co-operation. Carney wants to build up Canada's defence capabilities and expand its military suppliers beyond the U.S. as President Donald Trump wages a trade war on Canada and most of the world.

"Over 75 cents on every dollar of capital spending for defence goes to the United States. That's not smart," Carney told Power & Politics host David Cochrane on May 27.

December 2025
"Today, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, announced the conclusion of negotiations for Canada’s participation in SAFE – unlocking billions of dollars in potential defence opportunities for Canadian businesses. SAFE provides up to $244 billion in loans to EU Member States to support large-scale defence projects, including acquiring critical capabilities such as ammunition, missiles, drones, artillery systems, and infantry weapons. As all 27 EU Member States increase defence investments, greater cooperation on procurement opens massive new opportunities for Canadian manufacturers to build and export Canadian-made technologies and capabilities.

As EU countries strengthen their defence capabilities through SAFE, Canadian participation will give our defence industry expanded access to the European market, attract new reliable suppliers for the Canadian Armed Forces, and catalyse massive private investment in Canada – creating higher-paying careers, growing Canadian industries, and bolstering transatlantic defence readiness. With this agreement, Canada will become the only country outside of Europe with preferential access.

Canada’s participation in SAFE will be facilitated by the new Defence Investment Agency, which will remove red tape, centralise review and approval, and bolster industrial capacity. With negotiations now concluded, Canada and the EU will work to swiftly ratify the bilateral SAFE agreement, with the goal to officially launch Canada’s participation in SAFE in the coming weeks."

"On June 20, 2025, representatives of the governments of Canada and Australia signed a landmark technology partnership arrangement, a critical milestone in the rapid development and deployment of Canada’s A-OTHR system.

Through this arrangement, Australian industry partners will work with Canadian companies to build expertise and capacity in Canada, grow our domestic sovereign defence industry, support high-paying Canadian jobs, and help Canada scale up its own radar system and technology.

Canada’s Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar (A-OTHR) system is a key component of Canada’s North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) modernization plan and will provide advanced early warning, enable faster detection and decision making by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) for airborne threats, and provide long-range surveillance to meet Canada’s domestic and continental security needs."

At this point, I am afraid, the only cure for the NATO is to extricate the USofA from it. The USofA became a threat and they are very unwilling to see anything else but very warped American interest. We, European part of the NATO need to start relying on each other and work together to make Europe more stable and safer. IMO, of course.

And he will say that's what he has wanted all along - for USA to get out of NATO and Europeans to fend for themselves.

He will declare victory no matter what happens.

The world needs to ask the question: if 32 NATO countries including the US are prepared to provide security in the Arctic and around Greenland, why does the United States assert that they can do it better alone? Common sense says that's not true ... so security is not the reason for wanting Greenland. The US is proposing a hostile takeover of a sovereign nation in order to steal natural resource wealth without respecting the people, culture, and environmental law.

"We've come here after some, how shall I put it, remarkable public statements about Greenland," Rasmussen began. "We haven't succeeded in changing the American position." Although the countries haven't come any closer, he called the conversation "open and constructive."

It's clear that the US president maintains his desire to conquer Greenland.
...

Rasmussen also referred to this during his press conference. He said Denmark has already stepped up its defenses. "Not with dog sleds, but with ships, fighter jets, and drones."
...

Denmark and Greenland announced today that they will immediately increase their military presence in and around Greenland. Sweden, Norway, and Germany are also sending troops to the area.

Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Commonwealth Nations, and the EU anticipated that the United States intends to be hostile towards Western Countries, and have laid the groundwork to move forward without the United States. It's unfortunate, but everyone can see the writing on the wall ... while the United States government sleep-walks into a country where one man appears to unilaterally make all decisions.

The issue might be that not everyone at the negotiating table is a "democratic" partner?

The US "democratic" partner has to cooperate with NATO and the global economy, or there will be war in Greenland ... a war started by the united states against a sovereign NATO country and the Kingdom of Denmark. Canada knows it will be next, but Canada will never agree to giving up our quality of life for a few US dollars. Therefore, Canada must stand with Greenland.

"Denmark and Greenland are immediately expanding their military presence in and around Greenland. This includes aircraft, ships, and troops. The countries announced this shortly before their meeting in Washington.

Swedish Prime Minister Kristersson says several Swedish troops are arriving in Greenland today. The troops are part of a group of allies sending troops to Greenland at Denmark's request. He did not specify how many troops or which countries they were from."
...

US President Trump wants to take over Greenland, part of the Danish kingdom. "Whether they like it or not." The European Parliament said in a statement today that it "unequivocally condemns" the Trump administration's statements.

The EU has labeled the statements a "flagrant violation" of international law, the UN Charter, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a NATO ally. "Such statements are unacceptable and have no place in relations between democratic partners."
...

In today's statement, the EU referred to the 1916 treaty the US concluded with Denmark, in which the US recognised that Denmark had full sovereignty over Greenland."

In my humble opinion, I think this means that Denmark and Greenland are invoking NATO Article 5.

"The European Parliament calls the European Commission and the European Council to define concrete and tangible support to Greenland and Denmark, upholding EU principles and law, international law and the NATO Charter."

I’m not sure if this article has been discussed here, it’s from last April but seems fitting to share now as well.

Good luck with that. Ensuring that technology and machinery works in cold weather is something altogether foreign for the California tech crowd. They should build their tech Utopia in Florida, where they understand climate.

They could operate data centers there, imo. I posted a link upthread that Denmark might also be eyeing Greenland for data centers.

I was quite confident these countries would unite against the US, although I'm surprised at how quickly. Pleasantly surprised. We are sending a message and hoping there are enough good Americans with power and clout to stop Trump's expansionist goals. I know my country, Canada, is prepared to go to war to prevent the US from taking us over if we have to. Many, many of us have parents and grandparents who went overseas to fight for freedom and democracy in the world wars, so the idea is not really that foreign to us.

Environmental law would govern use of massive amounts of freshwater for AI data storage. Salt water data centers are fine, but they deteriorate faster.

Whatever was said today at the meeting shocked Greenland and Denmark enough that troops are being deployed to Greenland immediately.

Canada knows it's next if the United States tramples Greenland and Denmark. It's tremendously unfortunate that the US government is shifting to a warring country.

"We've come here after some, how shall I put it, remarkable public statements about Greenland," Rasmussen began."

While the US government is watching imaginary ships sailing past Greenland, Canada is in China re-establishing a trade relationship.

This decision looks like a green-light for the US government to initiate military action against the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland. The problem is that the US government reacted after the fact, and then decided they don't really care about a military invasion of Venezuela.

A responsible government would take action beforehand.

Today is the time for the government to decide that military attack against Greenland is not okay. After the fact is useless, but it looks like those who can make a difference are unwilling to make a difference ... at this time.

"A resolution aimed at limiting President Trump's options to attack Venezuela was rejected by the US Senate by a narrow margin of 51 votes to 50.

The resolution would have prohibited Trump from further military action in Venezuela without Congressional approval. But Republican senators voted against it on Wednesday."
