According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, at around 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, law enforcement officials in Colorado took 24-year-old Shaun French into custody without incident.

Glad he was caught. What a pervert

I have been following this case for a couple of days. I guessed at the girls identity after going through his FB account. The scene showed a violent attack including evidence outside of the home. :(

This makes me so very sad. These young girls have no idea how much danger the older guys pose for them. She deserved to live a wonderful life in her happy way.

Rest gently sweet girl.

I can't even imagine the nightmares her mom will have for the rest of her life.

Disgusted. Rest in peace Baleigh.

Yea he lived in the house for a while (but not any longer) so mom knows him.
I wonder whether he was asked to leave because of the inappropriate behaviour towards Baleigh? And that made him mad?

If he was familiar with her routine, he'd know that she called her mom every day at that time. Maybe killing her with mom on the other end of the phone was his way to punish the mother as well. I hate to even go there, but that sort of sadistic plan seems more and more common these days. MOO. Speculating only.

Sgt. Brandon Shearer of the SLC PD said in a press conference that French and Bagshaw had a sexual relationship in the past. The relationship was illegal, but appeared to be consesual, authorities said. Sgt. Shearer had earlier described the murder as “very violent and brutal.” The sergeant went on to say that the job of the forensic team at Bagshaw’s home would be “long and difficult.”

Consensual?!? So, was this man a house guest who took advantage of a young girl, unknowingly to her mother at first, and when mom found out, he was kicked out and charges were pressed?

House guest?
That never should have been allowed.
Just saying.
I don't imagine they knew what he was.

Households have guests sometimes.

People can't see the future and don't expect others to commit violence upon them.

I'm sure her family feels awful and don't need to be blamed for his actions.

Yes, yet another sad case of someone that was helped by a family, but eventually turned on them. He stayed with them - to me that means that in some way, they were helping him. He likely groomed Baleigh without mom realizing it.

I meant that mom will have nightmares for many reasons. One is that she knew him, but the fact that she was on the phone with Baleigh while she was being attacked and could do nothing to help her. Knowing that your daughter was killed violently and knew her killer is the stuff that nightmares are made of. But, to hear the attack happening, to be completely helpless to stop it. I can't even begin to imagine how horrifying that would be. My prayers are with this mother. She will need so much help and comfort in the days, weeks, and even years to come.

I agree cocomod, the anguish this woman must be in now is unfathomable.

I wonder though how much she heard on the phone. She called a neighbour first, to check on Baleigh. Surely if she had thought that her daughter was being brutally killed she would have called police first and not send a neighbour into a very dangerous situation? I don't know. Or maybe she thought the neighbour would be there fastest and could possibly help? Maybe the neighbor was a strong guy and she hoped he could help her daughter. We have not heard from the neighbour, did we? What a nightmarish situation they suddenly found themselves confronted with.

That sounds horrific. What did he do to her??? What a creep.

Maybe he was the one who identified SF as the attacker to police which is why they were immediately looking for him.

More detailed info.

"Every day after school when she got home one of us would call each other," Shauna Bagshaw told KUTV. “She had gotten the mail, and she was telling me about what came in the mail, and then all of a sudden she started screaming. I couldn't hear anything other than her screams."

Then the line went dead.

She told the station that she was aware Baleigh had been in a relationship with French, but did not know it was sexual in nature. Shauna Bagshaw said French had threatened to harm Baleigh and her family if she ended the relationship.

French had moved in with the family in February 2017, when Baleigh was 14 and he was 23. A family member later told police of seeing French having sexual relations with the girl on three occasions, reported The Salt Lake Tribune.

He could have waited until she was off the phone but he chose to do it while she was talking to her Mum. I'm guessing this was a cold and calculated choice.
