I honestly don’t think this guy had any intention of not being caught. He always knew it was just a matter of time

I don't know if anyone else climbed around on school roofs as a young and stupid person, but I did. I would never have dropped from 10 feet like that, but that is another story.
  1. The roof was hot. Not fry an egg hot, but at 85 degree heat, pretty hot. Sweat all over hot.
  2. The edges of the roof are not conducive to holding onto, contrary to what you see in the movies. There is usually metal flashing on the edges which are even more hot, plus loose pebbles
  3. Those pebbles are really rough on your knees and elbows. And hands if you are hanging off the sides. Like scrap your skin off rough.
  4. The descent was actually spectacular. Note when both feet are on the window, the knees are bent before heading to the ground. Ready for impact, no chance of locking a knee or hip when arriving at the ground. Most people would face the building and jump back (which I can attest is a bad thing). Excellent upper body strength and control. Good flexibility. No fear of self harm. This person is not the norm.
Also
  1. The clothing could actually have come from any second hand store. Just mentioning it.
Something is bothering me. I can't place it. Why take the rifle, then leave it?

I can see why he might have ditched the rifle, impulsively. By this time, the crowds were running all over, and LE was now on High Alert, and if anyone saw him carrying that large bundle, he would be instantly noticed and stopped. imo
Looks like a 98, but not quite right. Mini-Mauser 98? Synthetic stock, not that common. And the scope doesn't match. Could it be broken? It got flung around a lot on the descent.

And unless the killer was wearing gloves while loading the weapon, likely DNA there, too.

Given the NFT hat (if that's what it was, which is what I think), the guy could be a snowboarder and or a fan of NFT snowboarding event (s). Earlier this year I think some pre-qualifying occurred in February, then the the main event was for a week ln Revelstoke, BC, March 10-17.

If he went, he probably didn't go alone. Also probably hotel records, or Airbnb, or tickets..

Police no longer believe they have name of 'person of interest' - sources

Several hours ago, police sources told the BBC's US news partner CBS that investigators had the name of a "person of interest" in the Charlie Kirk shooting.

However, the same sources have since told CBS that investigators did have the identity of a person of interest they were working with - but "that lead has not panned out".

In the last few hours, officials gave a press conference where they released video footage of the suspect, and showed images of a "person of interest" - but didn't give a name.

  • More images of a "person of interest" have also been released, with the Utah Governor Spencer Cox saying that over 7,000 leads and tips have been submitted by the public so far

I wonder if any of the tips identify a specific person by name. I'm not even sure I believe it is a male! One thing that does stand out to me. The Converse sneakers - very popular with European teens and 20-somethings. Not as mainstream anymore with American teens and college students, who are more into Adidas Sambas, Nikes and Birkenstock right now. I wonder if its possible this POI is an international student? A long shot I know but just throwing it out there. ALL JMO

Have we considered the possibility that it is a disgruntled former Turning Points USA employee or volunteer?

Shooter was 'probably a hunter', former FBI agent tells BBC

Former FBI agent Dennis Franks spoke to the BBC News Channel earlier, and said that he believed the shooter was likely a hunter.

“It required a lot of confidence to be able to take the shot, to execute and hit where it did,” he told the BBC, explaining that the distance of the shooting would not be challenging for an experienced shooter.

While "anyone could go down to a rifle range and train with a scope", the former FBI agent said it was a combination of the area and the "confidence" of the gunman that suggested to him that the person who shot Charlie Kirk could be a hunter.

“I tend to think from a behavioural standpoint that he acted alone,” he said.

He urged people to be patient, and reiterated that he was confident that the shooter would be identified, after which it would "be a matter of finding him".

In photos: Suspect fleeing the scene moments after killing Kirk

Authorities have just released a new video of the suspect fleeing the scene, which you can watch here.

Here are some stills from that video showing his movements inside the campus:

Governor warns of misinformation

Governor Cox said there is a "tremendous" amount of misinformation circulating online and urged people not to share it further.

In reference to Kirk, Cox said: "I think Charlie said it best, that when things get bad we should put our phones down and spend time with our families."

"Our adversaries want violence,” Cox added, claiming that Russian and Chinese bots on social media are playing a role in spreading false information.

Authorities gathering evidence to pursue death penalty

Governor Cox says that there is "a lot of forensic evidence that is being processed right now" in both state and federal labs.

"More than anything, we are going to catch this person," he adds.

Authorities are gathering all the evidence needed to "pursue the death penalty in this case", he says. "That will happen here in the state of Utah."

He ends his speech - and the press conference - by thanking the public for their prayers.

"I know we are feeling those prayers, I know the Kirk family is feeling those prayers as well," he says. "We pray that God will bless our nation at this very dark time."

I’m a bit surprised they haven’t arrested someone yet.

They have some pretty decent pictures of him. Somebody can put a name to this guy. They also should be able to get DNA from the gun. Serial # on gun should help as well unless he managed to eradicate it somehow.

Looks to me he may have hurt his foot/ankle when he jumped down off the roof. He had an immediate limp. Right leg.

Reading posts now so unsure if this was mentioned but I have to wonder if he was quite athletic and confident in his physical ability.

Maybe a skateboarding, snowboarder, karate or whatever sports that may require skill, agility and maybe some jumps.
I was thinking parkour.

Even if he was, he will have breathed on it while settling himself and lining the shot up. There's DNA in breath.

Yes, it was.

To me, it looks more like he tried to steady himself, then fell down, and had some trouble getting to his feet (might have injured one leg), and then took off.

If he is injured, he may not have felt pain right away. He was running on adrenalin; he just wanted to get away from the scene.

Once the adrenaline subsides, pain may set in with a vengeance. If so, hopefully they're not only checking neighborhood cameras, but possibly Walmart or CVS to see if anyone fitting his description bought pain-relief items.

ETA: I see other posters have come to this possible conclusion as well.

JMVHO.
Watching the videos over and over, and looking at the straps on his person in the photos.

I'm really wondering if he might be wearing a suspension harness; he may have used a descender/rappeller for the upper portion of the drop. Before he goes down, it looks like he quickly casts down some long, folding pouch/bag/thing (?) so whatever the thing is, looks like it shifts/lodges/catches into a grooved/notched area of some kind at the top of the building right at the edge, around where he grasps with his hands as he's preparing to take the fall, and I'm seriously wondering if that's what is going on there. He maybe (??) anchored a descender into some groove up there and used it for the upper part of the fall/descent for very rapid rappel down. It may have been so fast, and so brief, we can't see it with the footage. They got his gun, right? So he's not toting the rifle along.

People use setups like this harness & rappeller for hunting & with tree stands. I'm looking at a video right now for Direct Action Rope Bag. Maybe he used something like that. Just noting, I have a fear of heights and have NO idea how that works, but I've seen them in use.

Do they still not have him? (checking) No. Investigators saying he's "college age." Have also checked into some things on the limp. Can you have a limp that is noticeable when you walk, but vanishes when you run? Yes. Maybe due to uneven muscle memory; maybe neurological basis; psychogenic; some condition/injury that involves certain muscles/joints, as running uses different muscles than walking. Wondering if the limp is actually real. Could be because he's concealing something and as many on here have noted, his shirt might work with that, him trying to pass it off as a limp. If he's wearing a harness, too, I doubt walking in one of those is very comfortable. But if he wanted to avoid drawing attention to himself, that wouldn't seem too wise. Also, watching that TMZ video where he's I think on the way there to the campus, he seemed to discard something on pavement outside a home-- maybe? It seemed like it, but maybe it was some other kind of background noise, dunno.

Really looks like there is something in his right pant-leg in this photo that would explain the limping motion as he walked onto the Campus.

But I do find something strange. For one, the photo of the black synthetic Mauser M18 rifle the Newyork post showed can't really be disassembled. The stock and forestock is one piece; and the barrel on those guns are thread locked. I suppose you could break the thread locked barrel beforehand but I'm not sure if you can just screw it back in later. Thing is, even if he did assemble the gun from 2 or more smaller pieces, why on Earth hide one of the piece in his pants and limp around instead of putting the parts in the sizeable backpack he was wearing?

The rifle fully assembled is about 42 inches long, depending on the barrel. The barrel is 22 or 24 inches long. If it was the barrel that was removed he should have been able to fit both into the bag easily. But what if it was the stock that somehow could be removed in a way just not apparent in photographs? The stock looks to be about half the length of the barrel, so 11 or 12 inches, leaving a larger piece of about 30 inches that would be too large to fit in the backpack which is about 22 inches across diagonally per the Amazon dimensions.

Seems this guy's DNA is not in any database. I think it's much easier to get lost out West than it is in the crowded Northeast.

  • #498
They don’t know who he is, only have his image and DNA. If he was a college student, they would know who he is by now IMO.

Regarding the video where he jumps down; I don't think he really injured himself. He hangs down reducing the drop distance to about 10 feet and then lands on grass. He does appear to drop something though that he stops for a moment to reach down to pick up, maybe his sun glasses or the like, before walking away with nothing like the limp the house surveillance camera footage showed him arriving on Campus with.
