What am I missing here?
LE didn't capture TR and bring it to an end, his father and friend brought TR to LE to surrender.
The one thing that was historic about a US political assassination is how the suspect ended up behind bars.
ino

"FBI Director Kash Patel claimed the capture of the suspect was 'historic' - patting the bureau on the back for bringing the manhunt to an end within 33 hours."

33 hours is pretty amazing and the partnership among the FBI, state and local officials was described as incredibly well orchestrated. Kudos to all of them.

Cox calls social media a ‘cancer on our society right now’

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox was referencing the rapid spread of graphic video of Kirk’s fatal shooting, along with the recent release of video a deadly stabbing on a commuter train in Charlotte, North Carolina.

He said Americans aren’t used to seeing such graphic imagery. He encouraged people to step away from their devices and spend time with family instead.

“This is not good for us. It is not good to consume,” the Utah governor said. “Social media is a cancer on our society right now.”

The suspect is being held on multiple initial charges, an officer of the UtahCounty Jail told CNN this morning, including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm and obstruction of justice.

Robinson has not been charged formally yet, and initial charging documents aren’t available at this time, other authorities in Utah told CNN. The offenses are all state charges, NBC News reported.

Utah governor Spencer Cox said this morning that the state will be working on formal charging documents in the coming days, which would include additional information on probable cause for a case.

Authorities have three days to file those documents in preparation for a preliminary court hearing, where Robinson would first go before a judge, likely “early next week”, the governor said.

Where I live on the west coast, British Columbia in Canada, Converse are still a big thing. I see grade 1 kids through to high school/university wearing them and their parents as well!

50 yrs old wear them too, but I live in a city surrounded by ocean so maybe it's more a thing here.

Maybe this killer took a cue from Bryan Kohberger wearing Vans. Are shoes a red herring/prop or his actual shoes? They look fairly worn in from the photo IIRC

MOO
Converse are extremely popular on college campuses and high School. They've improved their brand, many with cartoons, colors and quite fashionable. Yeap, the high tops. Much snazzier than the ones we wore.
My granddaughter has probably five or six pair.
Moo....

I don’t know anything about guns, I don’t know much about Discord. I’d never heard of Charlie Kirk until he was murdered.

But to me this outrageous act does have echoes of Luigi Mangione, although it’s really too early to know.

Killer, young guy, seems to have a normal family, has some kind of grievance and publicly shoots the person they deem responsible. Mysterious inscriptions alluding to motive.

Of course there are many differences as well.

Luigi didn’t do this in front of a crowd. His victim wasn’t a famous man.

In fact, it also has echoes of JFK, in my opinion. A very gory shot to the head for JFK, to the neck for Kirk. Instant death in front of enormous crowds that were caught on live TV. In the movies a shot that blows up someone’s head is called a “Kennedy Shot.”

Naturally JFK was a president and lived in a time before the internet, with everyone having a camera and surveillance everywhere, but this will live on because it was such a terrible bloody instantaneous death in public of a well-known political figure, though Kirk wasn’t a politician.

Oswald was a Communist who was politically motivated and we will learn more about Robinson’s motive. If he even has one.

I feel so sorry for the parents here. Good on that dad for turning his son in. That cannot be easy.

I assume Patel attributes the capture in part to the public release of photographs of the suspect, so that those around him would recognize him.
Absolutely. And also the work of the FBI's labs and other resources and how quickly they got things done in relation to that access, etc. Director Patel thanked the Attorney General for the support and resources to get all this moving quickly as they worked with their state and local partners. The team of all LE in Utah and the FBI worked closely to gather evidence, release photos to public, and the gathering of evidence is critical to the prosecution of the case, beyond just the arrest of the killer. The Governor stated that no one in LE on this case has slept for more than an hour over since the assassination took place.

My initial relief at the arrest is turning into....an empty feeling. These cultural references, social media influences, etc. seem shallow and wasteful and not with any true meaning or purpose. Not that pop culture needs to be serious and serve a bigger purpose, but these perps live in an online world that seems dark, manipulative, thoughtless, and well, shallow.

I can see that about Patel even though it's run of the mill procedure when there's CCTV footage.
imo
I think Patel made a misstep earlier (yesterday?) when he prematurely reported LE had the suspect when in fact they did not. His length of time at the microphone this morning applauding the FBI and urging LE to continue to seek their assistance in cases like these seemed an attempt at reputation repair.

FBI and Patel would be better served just doing better next time by avoiding the microphone until it is absolutely warranted.

That said, it was worthwhile and a good call to get those early images and then the improved images out as quickly as possible.

Scary world when someone will commit a murder to become a meme in their own online community... MOO

So where did the fake story about the casings having trans comments on them come from?

Suspect’s father recognized him, AP source says

BY LINDSAY WHITEHURST

Robinson’s father recognized him from images released by authorities and encouraged him to turn himself in, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

He refused at first, but then changed his mind, according to the official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

His father reached out for help to a youth pastor, who helped Robinson turn himself in.

So he just went home, then. Not much of a plan to escape justice!
Noooo, surely not.....what became of the international assassin with a waiting private jet that turned off it's transponders in order to "disappear"?

I am desperately trying to catch up. And I know this is disgusting. But, cue the fan club. I can already see that wack job women will start fangirling over this murdering fool. Maybe he wanted some Luigi style groupies.

my guess, people not having a clue what the inscriptions meant or about pop culture references assigning their own biases to the meanings or significance of them. JMO

I don't understand. There is no rifle visible when he jumps from the roof and runs off. The rifle was supposedly broken down and parts stuffed into his backpack and/or pants. Then the rifle is found in the woods nearby, fully assembled. Are they suggesting he wasted time reassembling the rifle when he stashed it in the woods, instead of just tossing it and running.
This makes no sense to me.

'The spent cartridge was still chambered and three unspent cartridges contained wording on them expressing what some law enforcement officials described as "transgender and anti-fascist" writing, according to preliminary information shared with agencies.'

If this really is the case then I'm sorry but it seems like very much more than a coincidence that the shot was fired when it was. To go to the extreme of writing on cartridges and then to manage to time your shot coincidentally with the moment a particular question is asked? he was surely at the very least listening to the speech? if not, that is some freak timing.

ETA: forgot the link
I have a question. I'm new to this site and learning as I go. But, in the video released of him walking to the campus with a stiff leg limp (assumably the rifle in his pant leg) then once the shot is taken and he's running across the roof, jumping down 14 ft and running again, where is the rifle? Nothing but a backpack in his hands. I'm not seeing how this adds up? Did he take the rifle apart and put it in the backpack? I would like to see pictures of the rifle in the towel to see if it was taken apart or not.

The suspect in the killing of Charlie Kirk has been named as 22-year-old, Tyler Robinson, from Utah. Spencer Cox, Utah governor, says bullets with messages inscribed on the casings were discovered with the rifle.
