Vermont State Police locates body, arrests husband in disappearance of Emily Ferlazzo

ST. ALBANS, Vermont (Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2021) — The Vermont State Police has located human remains believed to be those of Emily Ferlazzo and arrested her husband, Joseph, on suspicion of murder.

After agreeing to speak to investigators Tuesday afternoon, Joseph Ferlazzo told detectives that he had killed his wife early Saturday morning inside their vehicle in Bolton. The vehicle, a small bus, had been converted into a living and traveling space that Emily and Joseph Ferlazzo shared and had used to travel to Bolton late last week. The state police located and seized the bus early Tuesday morning in St. Albans.

A subsequent court-ordered search of the bus at the VSP St. Albans barracks uncovered human remains and other evidence that corroborated Joseph Ferlazzo’s account of the killing.

The victim’s body will be brought to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2021, to determine the cause and manner of death and to confirm identity.

VSP’s investigation into the death is active and will continue through the night. The state police is working with the Chittenden County and Franklin County state’s attorneys’ offices. Joseph Ferlazzo is expected to be charged with first-degree murder and remain in custody pending arraignment Wednesday in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in Burlington.

husband only found because one of the detectives saw him in convenience store.
Thank goodness the detective was astute and found him!

She has been found deceased, according to the VSP press conference. My heart is so heavy. Apparently one of the VSP detectives was in the convenience store where Joseph Ferlazzo was sighted and approached Ferlazzo and asked him to come back to the station to answer questions. Ferlazzo then confessed to killing his wife in the town of Bolton.

ETA: Here is the recorded press conference.
I'm so so so sick. When will it be safe for women to travel with their significant others - or have significant others - without extreme risk of violence?

When will it ever be safe for women to live their lives without any threat? We can't even jog, shop or drive alone!

Well, truthfully, all of us have been traveling with our husbands all of our lives, as have everyone we know. This is an extreme rarity. Thank God.

i think he did. it seems they said remains were found. please do not let this guy out on bail.

He is charged with first-degree murder and confessed to the crime, so I doubt a judge will him grant bail, but then again, sometimes the judicial system can be surprising.

Crazy that he kept her body in the van after he killed her. Crazier that he left the van with her body in it at a friend's place. As I said earlier, there are so many places in this area to hide a body forever.

This is terrible news. Even though I expected that he killed her, I still had hoped I was wrong.

Rest in peace and power, Emily. I never had the privilege of meeting you, but you seemed like such a free spirit who wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. I’m so sorry I (and many others) only got to ‘meet’ you under such terrible circumstances, but you’ve touched me in a very personal way. Although I don’t personally believe in Heaven, I’d like to believe you’re in a better place and can see how many people love and care about you, even people who never knew you in life. I will demand justice for you, Emily, and make sure your memory isn’t forgotten.

He was booked at the Northwest State Correctional Facility around 11:01 tonight.
He was there for hours before being booked.
Criminals can sit in a Correctional facility for hours before being booked that is normal.
He will be transported in the morning to Burlington for arraignment.
Right now he is on 15 minute suicide checks and when he returns from court he will be placed in Delta unit. Delta is solitary.
He will most likely stay in Delta for weeks or months and he will most likely stay on suicide checks for weeks or longer.

This happens so much it’s beyond terrifying. Makes me feel even more like I narrowly escaped that life, having dated a narcissistic sociopath for years in my youth. But anyway, what a tragedy. Far, far too common.
