Michelle Gardner-Quinn Remembered Burlington, Vermont - October 15, 2006

Hundreds gathered at UVM's Ira Allen Chapel Sunday night to share their memories of Michelle Gardner-Quinn, and to celebrate the life of the student who loved music, nature, and yoga.

UVM's Campus Minister, Rev. Sue Marie Baskette, presided over the memorial service. "In the time Michelle was in Burlington, she made many, many friends," said Rev. Baskette.

Michelle Gardner-Quinn's parents joined those many friends and admirers inside a packed Ira Allen Chapel. They came to do what may be impossible -- to try to make sense of the senseless. "She will sorely be missed in our dorm," said Fay Oppenheimer, a friend of Michelle's. "Her crazy personality and positive energy always made our dorm a fun and happy place. It definitely won't be the same without her."

Speakers remembered the 21 year-old Virginia native as a thoughtful daughter of the Earth, sharing stories of how Gardner-Quinn would often pause to admire plant life or insects -- that she felt a connection to eco-systems and cared intensely for their protection. Her Environmental Studies professor, Cecilia Danks, read from her student's most recent essay: "I hope my time in Vermont will further these goals, and aid me in a greater understanding of my place as a whole."

This murder is just so senseless to me. This along with the murder of the entire family along the highway in Flordiay, has brought me to my knees. I cannot fathom how a person is able to function in any way in society and then is capable of such evil acts. It brings me to my knees and makes me afraid and makes me feel helpless. Clearly this evil is beyond our grasp... what can we do?

I so agree Juliana,

Not to be graphic, but the thought of a man grabbing or kidnapping a girl so he can have sex with her one time, damage her in the interim and end up killing her so she won't rat on him - it is beyond senseless. To trade a life for a few orgasms That's about what it amounts to for so many we have read about here.

And I think the USA is outraged as there have been enough situations like this that they have pressed for tougher legislation. Every state should have the same laws for sex offenders and I think there should be a secondary level of sex offender who has been charged with a crime and not found guilty. I don't know if that's legal, but it sure would catch those who haven't advanced as far extending rape into murder to get rid of the evidence!

Just a thought, have you looked through the registered sex offenders database? He may have been registered in a different state, IMO. Also, there is a Brian Rooney from Virginia who started a released/prisoners website. I found it when I used ask.com and searched on him. If you're interested, let me know and I'll try to find it again. The prison brian rooney is from Virginia.[/QUOTe

I am looking through NJDOC and the NJsex offenders

I can't shake this feeling I saw him while trying to look up someone a while back. The thing is his name may mean nothing because if you look at some of these guys they have up to 20 aliases. I am bad at names but I don't forget faces.

Now I feel even worse there is a little girl geez I want to say Jessica
MOO
Thanks for starting this discussion thread, mom3dd... hey, I didn't mean to go off on a tangent on the other thread. It is just so upsetting to have stories such as these occur over and over again! Always the same outcome, finding the missing ones tortures, raped & dead. I really hope they BURN this guy! Did he not confess to a friend and now he's denying it? I can not understand where such evil comes from, has it always been around, or is it multiplying? It seems there is so many cases just like this one. It's sickening! Too bad these pervs can't be put on public dispaly and the families decide and render their punishments, on national television! :furious:

The victims, especially young women and older teens that fit into this category, will never have rights.

My daughter(16) at the time , worked part time and her and her 5 friends were stalked and endured sexually explicit phone calls at work by some 47 year old creep and he blocked his number , he also did it at the store up the highway ,same type of calls but he forgot the one time and they got him at the other store (DUNKIN DONUTS) and the Detective in charge said "unfortunatley there is nothing we can do unless he does something" and I quote. WTF?

So there you go. He is a tow truck driver for the turnpike and the parkway in NEW JERSEY.
This is why people like him get in contact with victims. Because we are worried about the perps rights first. Sad but true.

So true that the law takes care of the perps but I'm not sure how else they could handle it, the manpower just to issue warnings could be astronomical. I still remember going through pervy phone calls at a restaurant I worked at in high school 20 years ago which escalated to the guy coming to the drive through and exposing himself.

The restaurant I worked was a half a block from the main police station so we worked with them to ensure there would always be two people working our window until we could help catch the guy because they could do nothing when it was one person's word against his and our location was the best for logistics. I was the one working the window with one other person when we finally caught the guy literally with his pants down. He had been exposing himself for a couple of months by then and lord knows where that could have escalated to.

i think it's clear that he blacked out and probably doesn't remember, although he remembered enough to come home and tell his neighbor he 'did something bad to the girl from the college'. duh,, sounds like a confession to me.
he also seemed to show remorse to his friends at the bar. but i guess all it took was a few minutes pondering what life in prison would be like, and he thought he better do whatever he can to save his own hide.. hey, might as well take advantage of the fact that there were no witnesses & they don't have any DNA evidence yet... but like i said he's a bad liar because he already more or less confessed and all signs point to him.

Rooney was taken from our facility, went to court and then went to the St.Johnsbury facility.

His bail is $150,000.
One of the ones that he is accused of molesting was his sister-in-law.She was 14 years-old at the time.
He used a rag soaked with ether or paint thinner to subdue her.He is accused of doing that to his wife while they were married.

If he did the same to Michelle, there might be chemical burns for one link to Rooney.
A subpoena is in order for Rooney's DNA.

I used the link above to do a search on him, he doesn't show up anywhere that I checked which was nearly every state. see if anyone else can find out. I feel like this is his first murder victim, many times when it is their first they will most likely act out the way he did the next day. but I don't doubt for a second that this isn't his first sexual assult to bad that an innocent life was taken from us, but on the other hand its good that he got caught, this could have been a small child as well.

$150,000!! That's nothing. dark_shadows, do you know the conditions for making bail? Is it 10% cash or all cash? I'd hate to see this loser make bail and go on the run. JMHO.

Thanks,
barry

I want to say it's 10 percent for bond...and if so...that's a ridiculous bail amount.

I just read on Channel 3's website that the bail bond company declined to do business with Rooney's family. Not because of monetary issues, rather moral issues. They said the family had the assets, but chose not to do business with them because of the heinousness of the charges. I'll try to post the link.

This is something to high five about in this tragedy.

Hi there Sweetmop,:blowkiss:
I want you to know that your post is very much appreciated.
With the autopsy results and the evidence,it will not be long before he is going to be arrested for Michelle's murder and brought back to us.With that looming,I do not see any bail company assuring bail for him.Zigna is a very large bonds company and is known worldwide.Declining the underwriting for him does not hurt the bail company at all.
Scott was the spokes person for the bond company on our news this evening.
He recently started at that bond company. He left employment after years of service at our facility to work for them.He is a good man and we were all very proud of him.
Here are the transcripts;

link
Scott Sprano/Freedom Bail Bonds:"I was contacted on the possibility of posting the bond. I did meet with Mr. Rooney in the St. Johnsbury Correctional Facility holding cell.")) Bail agent Scot Sprano says he met with Rooney at the St. Johnsbury prison Tuesday afternoon. Sprano says Rooney's family in Richmond have enough money and own enough property to secure the bail loan. But the company decided they don't want to help Rooney get out of jail. ((tape tc 1:01 Scot Sprano/Freedom Bail Bonds:"Um after further reviewing the case we have decided to decline to write the bond. Joyce:" Tell us why?" Sprano:"Uh due to the heinousness of the crimes we've just decided against it."))

Hello Barry9120,:)
The amount of $250,000 was asked for but the judge reduced it to $150,000.His lawyer wanted a bail of $50,000.
I will ask Scott what the exact conditions are and post them.

Respectfully,
