Why would she paint a 'copy' of such a famous painting? I think she might be

  • #282
It's too close for her to claim copyright on the painting.

It sure seems exactly the same.

Yeah sure, but my point was they had reportedly met at least once relatively recently when her deception was already going on. The parents hadn't seen her since 2004 or so, IIRC.
Thanks! I misunderstood.

I think the ultimate questions come down to
1). Can she really lead the community better than someone else in the positions she holds? (EWU AA studies, police Omsbudsman, NAACP Pres)
2). It is about honesty, morals, ethics, trust, honor and integrity. Her roles in the various positions are to speak up and call out those who violate trust and honor. She is expected to take a higher ground on the issues that minorities struggle with because of discriminatory acts. Can anyone ever really trust her?

That suggests to me that she has artistic training, but she probably has very little original art. She imitates art, and her life is an imitation of a black woman - she is the inauthentic woman.

Oh wow! Honestly I think the original is so much better, the image of the face (up close) in the original and appears to be sort of weeping and has a sadness feel to it. Her version of the face is much more animal like (tiger?). Pardon my untrained eye, just an observation.

Even if she could get past lying about the race issue, if it turns out that the hate crimes and other victim stories she has didn't actually happen the way she said her credibility is totally shot as an advocate IMO. If she talks about a problem from now on how is anyone to know if it was real or something she made up.

This is just disgusting. Ugh.

Buzzfeed article explains that her many and extravagant claims of being victimized are what drew attention to her other stories.

BUT. Who was the source that "reached out" and sent photos and contact information of her family to the media? Folks along the way seem to have been suspicious about her racial claims, not certain. Photos are proof.

Rachel is 100% responsible for her own mess, but I still believe something is off about the family as a whole. They are estranged, have been for years, and rather bitterly. Which is why I don't accept brother Ezra's accusations at face value, nor her parents' statements which often, IMO, are jabs at Rachel.

A supportive or even neutral family would not have commented to the media about her. These folks haven't piped down yet.

I'm on the fence. On the one hand, I think it is possible that something happens to create an adult like this one. On the other hand, I feel her parents statements have been quite bewildered and tame. Almost gentle. It does seem they were sought out and likely asked to prove they were telling the truth.

See, she lives in the same area she grew up in. Apparently it was well known in her town that she had appropriated black culture so when she started making repeated claims about being a victim and suspicions grew, I imagine it wasn't that hard to find people who knew she wasn't who she claimed to be. And possibly some of them were non-family members tired of the charade and false claims of victimization.

JMO if there is a grain of truth in Rachel's accusations somewhere I think it's probably the physical and sexual abuse part because it would go towards explaining the estrangement and the extreme denial of her birth family, and unless I missed it it was something that the family did not deny although they denied the teepee and the bow hunting and the residency history etc. If the older brother is going to face trial there might be some independent evidence that doesn't hang upon Rachel's testimony. And there could easily be very divided loyalties within the family if one sibling accuses another. The brother Ezra said there was no physical abuse but admitted that the family used corporal punishment, and I think corporal punishment crosses the line into child abuse very easily, so that claim could be close to the truth although she might be embellishing the slavery aspect of it for extra effect.

If the brother is a sexual abuser I hope she didn't hurt the chances of getting him behind bars by destroying her credibility making up stories of victimhood.

Yes, and personality disorders often are preceded by a history of abuse, often sexual abuse in childhood. So that tips me the other way.

To add to the "black" celebs that don't "look" black:

I think this discussion about appearance and "race" is fascinating. There are several threads about the subject over at LipstickAlley and I fell down the rabbit hole reading.....

I agree with the things you are saying about "race". However, there are actual cultural and ethnic differences and this woman has appropriated both American black culture and African American ethnicity.

BBM. We've seen reports of numerous lies by RZ. So very many lies that I couldn't list them all if I tried.

Knowing that RZ is a serial, habitual, pathological liar, I don't believe a single word that comes out of her mouth. Going even further than that, I believe it's likely that anything she says is not true. I don't know that she's capable of telling the truth, ever. If she says it, it's probably not true. IMO, JMO, and all that.

Therefore, IMO, if she says someone was a victim, they probably weren't. If she says someone was abused, they probably weren't. And therefore, anything she says that's contrary to something that her parents say, IMO, the parents are probably telling the truth and she is probably lying.

This is what happens when you make a habit of lying. Particularly when you turn your entire life into a lie.

And this is why I flip again and am unsure. Because you can't trust liars. Also, there have been people like this in the past who either suffered no abuse in childhood or whose claims were fraudulent. Melissa Huckaby is one (who kept making stuff up about arsons, rapes, etc., until she raped and murdered a kid to insinuate herself into a major "story"), and Tanya Reid ( a woman who kept suffocating her kids for attention) is another off the top of my head.

Some of these people were just spoiled and/or got lost in the shuffle when they were kids - but not abused.
Says her adopted brother Ezra. Who knows.

My son is one of 2 white kids in a class of 28. Last year (another school) the balance was about 60 percent white to 40 percent black, mixed, and "other."

My son tested his way into a gifted program within a traditional school, as did the other kids- they all are in the academic top 5% of kids in our state. So, they all have a lot in common. Except race and class, the 2 transcendent biggies.

My son definitely feels he's different from his classmates. He's absolutely constantly aware that he's the minority for the time being. He frequently hears kids in the hallways (from classes other than his own) make racist comments, and being the minority, he often assumes the comments are about him.

Here's what is NOT happening. He isn't developing bad feelings about black or white people, or himself, much less feeling hatred towards himself or anyone else.

He IS learning about racism first hand, and he's getting a taste of how it feels to be in a minority. He was bewildered at first, then super-sensitive, then curious, then empathetic, and after some months, indifferent.

Maybe Rachel went down another path at Howard, and maybe not. In any case, if she walked out with self-hatred I expect that's because she walked in feeling that way about herself, for whatever reason.

Awesome post. Love yoor perspective.

i don't know what this is

anyone wanna guess if she downloaded it herself?

Edit: i guess not

Some of her art is a bit bleak.

The video fits the pattern of a histrionic woman. They are known to be very seductive in relationships but can't sustain long-term ones. Obviously, the guy is extremely turned on and smitten by her and she supplied numerous sexy photos to him for the video. They broke up two months after becoming engaged.

I would think there are some hair stylists out there who have helped her achieve some of her looks and might have wondered about façade versus real. Seems to me the intricate coiling where every hair is participating would be hard to achieve on one's own.

I wondered the same thing!!!!

I answered my own question she does have a son and was concerned for his safety at one point (if she is telling the truth,of course)

From the article:

The region, which is overwhelmingly white, has a troubled history with race relations. Northern Idaho once served as a home base for the Aryan Nations.

In a 2009 interview with the AP, Dolezal described herself as a multi-racial woman who found plenty of challenges in Coeur d'Alene. That included an incident in which three skinheads visited the office and asked for a tour, Dolezal said.

They showed little interest in the center's work, she said, but saluted a Nazi flag that was part of an exhibit on propaganda.

"They asked me where I lived," she said, and where her young son went to school.

None of this is remotely true. IMO. In one police report, her young son completely contradicted claims that some white people broke into her home and that he was frightened to death (He says they were confused and thought it was where they were supposed to house sit. They even stayed to help find the cat they inadvertently let out of the house and the son was not scared in the least).

Interesting. The painting (the one in the middle) looks very much like a work by Turner called "Slave Ship". If she painted it, she seems to have painted the left 2/3 of the original.

Wow!!!!

It's very similar and she must have looked at the Turner work while painting but it's not exactly the same.

Oh that's more than just similar. It doesn't have to be identical to be total plagiarism. This is plagiarism:

From her blog http://racheldolezal.blogspot.com/2012/01/triptych.html below a triptych:
"Triptych with collaborative poetry by published writer, Dr. Josh Dolezal. First Panel: Absence. Second (middle) Panel: The Shape of our Kind. Third (final) Panel: The Return" bbm

In a quick search, I saw a uni. prof- type-bio for Dr. Josh Dolezal w his pix. If we dig no further than this prof-bio for him, can we figure out the relationship, as long as no further discussion of him.

It's her older bio brother, from what I understand. She has a bio brother by the name of Joshua.

Yeah I don't believe in the concept of "victim culture". There is not an entire culture based on wanting to be treated as a victim. That's racist.

It is not about being black or anything like that, it is more an embracement of the notion of something being done wrong to someone and putting yourself in their place, not because of empathy or anything like that, but because you derive a perverse psychological satisfaction from doing it. <modsnip> This woman is doing something like that, except that she is acting out the part instead of being a spectator. But it is still role playing, because when all is said and done, she can stop being an oppressed black woman any time she feels like, and go back to being a mainstream religious white person (or whatever) without any oppression at all. A real black woman can't do that, she is stuck in her skin and has no choice but to deal with all the cr*p thrown her way.

  • #294
Well if I read correctly she got a full scholarship because of being black so at least for that she can be accountable for?

  • #295
No. She got a scholarship because Howard assumed she was black, based on her art portfolio. She can't be held accountable for that. It doesn't appear she broke any rules there.

  • #296
Yes, and personality disorders often are preceded by a history of abuse, often sexual abuse in childhood. So that tips me the other way.

I think it is more likely that she grew up in a conservative highly religious "white" environment that she despised and this was her way of rebelling against that. It is not unusual for children who grow up in those sorts of environments to do that sort of thing, although not specifically in this way.

She clearly doesn't want to be mainstream religious white person. She could have been that day in and day out.

Her parents adopted a number of black children, which is where her interest in the culture seem to be coming from.

You can't assume that Howard assumed anything. They probably just thought her portfolio was interesting, and gave the scholarship on that. If you ask them they will likely tell you exactly that.
