GUILTY WA - Jamie Chaffin for child endangerment, Bremerton, 2012

At the age of 9 he's endured more challenges than some people face in a lifetime.

And now, after pleading guilty Tuesday to bringing to school a handgun that accidentally discharged and critically wounded a classmate, he has a criminal record.

But Kitsap County prosecutors believe there's hope for the 75-pound boy with the buzz cut and blue eyes. That's why they agreed to a plea deal that spares him from juvenile detention in favor of probation and counseling.

"The whole intent and purpose of the Juvenile Justice Act is to rehabilitate juvenile offenders as well as to hold them accountable," said Senior Deputy Prosecutor Todd Dowell.

Bremerton school shooting raises supervision issues
March 9, 2012

"The anguished father of a girl who was seriously injured after a 9-year-old boy brought a gun to their third-grade classroom says the state failed his daughter. John Bowman said the state let the boy visit his mother, a woman who had her parental rights terminated and had a lengthy history of crime and drug abuse. She is accused of leaving guns unsecured around her home.

"Amina's life has been forever altered, along with the rest of our family, due to the breakdown of a system that allows parents deemed unfit by the state to have unrestricted access to this student and his siblings," Bowman told reporters after the boy was sentenced this week. His daughter, Amina Kocer-Bowman, remains in serious condition...."

Amina Bowman alert, talking while recovering in hospital
March 13, 2012

"Amina Bowman, the 8-year-old girl shot while in her Bremerton classroom last month, is showing encouraging signs of improvement while she's hospitalized at Harborview Medical Center. Bowman was shot in the stomach and suffered life-threatening injuries in Feb. 22 incident; the bullet from the .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol remains lodged near her spine. She was taken off a breathing machine last week. Tuesday, her father, John Bowman, allowed cameras inside the hospital room, giving an update on Amina's condition. He said she's no longer constantly medically sedated. "She's up for a couple hours at a time, watching TV or talking with her mom..."

Well, the NASCAR race was Sunday.
I guess she should be getting back soon.

It boggles my mind that they are not going after the mom and her boyfriend.
Why should they be enjoying a vacation????

  • #108
Are they also going to take the "long way home"? Jeesh. This is beyond ridiculous.

Nope!!! They are still out of town I guess!
But they are expected in court tomorrow!!! At least we know when to expect them.

Investigators said Passmore and Bauer are currently out of state but are expected in court Thursday to answer to the charges.

The boy's mother, Jamie Lee Chaffin (who also goes by the last name Passmore), has felony convictions related to drug use. She and her boyfriend, Douglas L. Bauer, were charged Tuesday with third-degree reckless assault, a felony.

Doctors say 8-year-old Bremerton girl will live
March 14, 2012

"Doctors say the 8-year-old girl shot by a classmate at a Bremerton elementary school came very close to death, but is expected to live through the ordeal. Amina Kocer-Bowman was critically wounded in the Feb. 22 shooting at Armin Jahr Elementary, where a 9-year-old student brought a .45- caliber handgun to school in his backpack. Police say the weapon accidentally discharged, sending a single bullet through Amina's right arm and into her side. From there, the projectile passed through her liver, gallbladder, and small intestine, before severing her inferior vena cava, the large vein that drains blood from the legs. "That vein was completely transected by the bullet, and so that's why she was bleeding to death really, from that injury..."

We missed this incredible video somehow. Amina is awake and speaking!!

"Mom of girl, 9, shot at school: ‘We’re happy she’s still here’
March 23, 2012

"Her 9-year-old daughter Amina nearly died after she was accidentally shot by a classmate, but Teri Bowman said that she refused to accept the possibility that she would lose her child. "That was something I didn't want to think about," Bowman told NBC's Miguel Almaguer in a report that aired on TODAY Friday. "I was like, 'She's gonna get through this; I know she is.' And I told her: 'You're a Bowman. And we do never, never ever quit.' "

The worst may be over for little Amina Kocer-Bowman. Following her Feb. 22 shooting in Bremerton, Wash., she endured six surgeries. The bullet shattered her elbow, passed into her abdomen, and then penetrated her liver, pancreas and intestines. It finally lodged in her spine, but Teri and Amina's father, John, are grateful that it doesn't appear to have affected her movements, and that their daughter is now on the mend...."
