WA - Major security incident at SeaTac Airport. All planes are grounded, Aug 2018

he stated his desire to see the olympics . At first he said i have enough to get to the Olympics

Then he verbalized that he was surprised at how much fuel was being burned

Probably dumbed down the fuel settings in the flight sim.

Anyone can see the Olympics, Hurricane Ridge provides a fantastic view and you can get there by car.

Suicidal people still have instinct of safe preservation. I have no doubt the guy was suicidal, he said he is going to go nose down after he does his trick and he did just that.

There might be shades of bipolar here. I know that as a professional and suffering with the malady myself.

Bipolar is like ice cream. Media has messed this up for the public.

All ice cream is ice cream. Different flaovers are different however.

There is some crossing over

  • Bipolar I disorder involves periods of severe mood episodes from mania to depression.

  • Bipolar II disorder is a milder form of mood elevation, involving milder episodes of hypomaniathat alternate with periods of severe depression.

  • Cyclothymic disorder describes brief periods of hypomaniac symptoms alternating with brief periods of depressive symptoms that are not as extensive or as long-lasting as seen in full hypomanic episodes or full depressive episodes.

  • "Mixed features" refers to the occurrence of simultaneous symptoms of opposite mood polarities during manic, hypomanic or depressive episodes. It's marked by high energy, sleeplessness, and racing thoughts. At the same time, the person may feel hopeless, despairing, irritable, and suicidal.

  • Rapid-cycling is a term that describes having four or more mood episodes within a 12-month period. Episodes must last for some minimum number of days in order to be considered distinct episodes.
I experianed ( 2001 -2006 ) relentless rumination of being out of here. It is exhausting and basically all one thinks about .

You would be amazed at how many hours , after a day at the office, ha who knew your therapist was wanting out more than you!

YOu would also be amazed how much is out there on how to do so! Obtaining method, time till death , degree of suffering, detection , etc etc !

I never attempted - that is typical however. Males tend to DO it. Once. Females generally have a history of attempts. Males are more violent in method (guns) which increase likelihood of completion.

He put himself in a guaranteed successful situation as did the German Air guy. Omar did the same.

My flavor - I never became psychotic. Some do. That is the media presentation of bipolar . The reality is very few bipolar sufferers have the psychotic component.

I am a mixed.

i kinda think he might be Cyclothymic. I am confused about the Andrew statement and seem to think ( more and more ) that financial something might be final straw

Those that have never experianced clinical depression tend to think it is a impulsive act. Very rarely. The truth here is it is years and years of battling not to do so.

HOwever when the darkness comes again it can be comforting to know you can always escape.

That is very comforting and often gets one through the dark thunderstorm - knowing if the pain and darkness continues to get worse you Do have some options .

Likely is, but what people post on-line doesn't always accurately represent what is going on in their life.

They opened up a bakery for three years then it closed. Not doing well money wise? Hard to understand on a surface as to what this guy was so depressed/upset about. He was married, had a job (from wasn't fired, which is a trigger for many men who commit these type of acts).

This is why I wondered if he might have had CTE since he was a star athlete in high school football, wrestling and track. He also played some college football.

Man who authorities say took airliner and crashed was a standout athlete in Alaska

What is CTE?

From article: Early symptoms of CTE usually appear in a patient's late 20s or 30s, and affect a patient's mood and behavior. Some common changes seen include impulse control problems, aggression, depression, and paranoia.

This websleuths thread has more articles about CTE: Tyler Hilinski, 21 - Beloved Wsu Quarterback Had Cte

Both young men had been reported to have been outgoing, happy and hardworking. They were both considered to be good team players. They had families that cared greatly for them. One other thing they had in common is that they did something that has been described as being completely out of character for them by their families.

Bipolar 1 here with psychosis. Once...
It’s tough to admit. Humiliation element carries a lot of weight in mood and personality disorders..

until one can crossover into the understanding that mental problems are no different than medical there will always be a problem grasping things

its identical to an individual that is not diabetic being able to eat ice cream sundae

nothing happens

if a diabetic eats a sunday its a whole different thing.

my vote is gonna be there is a huge financial issue with this decision on his part we will see

understanding and grasping mental illness is a huge deal based on many variables -- parents childhood socioeconomic situation educational history religious beliefs location vocation etc etc

they all inform anyone's ability to understand what it is

obviously the notions that he had a bakery has some real meaning is probably not accurate - he stole a plane did acrobatics and killed himself so we would have to assume that the notion that having a bakery negates whatever his stuff actually was is somewhat limited

competency issues ? critical parent? is there a military history ?? He stated he wanted to go in --

Some of the most difficult times in life are event driven.

Speculations ~

Did I hear loss of a brother, early on?

Promotion in April unsatisfactory? Maybe didn't pass a drug test to advance as fast as he would have liked, or company with back up in seniority?

Wife working as waitress, iirc, and still baking for people, working at night? He's working like a dog (heavy lifting) all day.

He's going to school for bachelors in social sciences.

No time to enjoy the simple things like a sunset?

He obviously loves Alaska. Misses it? Misses family? Previous life? Previous friends?

Could layer it further, sometimes people know they are lost can't face it. Sometimes people don't know and just act out.

His face to the world, a very sweet, fun loving guy. But, not mature enough to face certain things, yet? Screws loose, as he put it, but maybe he just needed some more tools for the tool box, of life.

I am left with the impression of how spontaneous his escape from everything feels. He may have been an aviation super fan for a long time, but he upped and slipped a plane into the line up, and just took off. --Maybe they were understaffed that day and he seized the opportunity?

When I think of giant risk taking, I think of the French dude who walked between the twin towers on a tightrope, was arrested, and promptly hailed a hero.

Was the thrill of Rich's dare devil risk symbolic of that which was locked up?

I think he must have been scared in the air when he saw the fighter jets. It sunk in. The joyride gave way to reality. He definitely wanted to do no harm, but he knew he was screwed. He did his best, and he did no harm.

It's terribly tragic to know someone's last words, like this. I feel so sad for the incredible control tower person who so calmly shared his last moments with him.

-And his family and wife who obviously loved him dearly.

Since the body likely burned in the resulting fire, seems they won't be able to do an autopsy. So we will never know if he had brain damage. Family seems shocked so it would appear there were no warning signs.

This is what I don’t get. Assuming he works as part of a crew or whatever, did no one see him turn this plane around and wonder why? Is everyone just so intent on their work that they’re not paying attention?
Part of his job was to tow the planes. Even if somebody saw him do it, they probably would think nothing of it, since that was part of his job.

I recently watched some stuff about the Texas university tower shooter. It's fascinating that he had a sort of weird insight into himself, seeking help but not returning for subsequent appointments, writing letters, requesting his brain be studied. And lo and behold he had a brain tumor. I'm not saying that happened here--of course I have no idea, it just makes me wonder. It's too bad there can't be an autopsy. The whole story is so sad. I'm so glad nobody else was physically hurt; one of my oldest friends and her family live in Gig Harbor, so it was scary in that sense as well.

I'm not sure what your point is.

I guess I was thinking someone would realize this plane shouldn’t have been going anywhere else that day. But you are most likely right.

I believe the full quote was “I think I am going to try to do a barrel roll and if that goes good then I am going to go nose down and call it a night.”

I take that to mean land the plane. When people say "call it a night", that usually means go home, not kill themself.
I think the nose down part is the part where he’s going to crash. He said elsewhere to atc that he hadn’t really planned on landing it.
