And the whole time, everyone thought that the UID was Asian, possibly preventing his family (and anyone else) from making the connection.

Well, no, as per this thread, by 2021 they knew he was not Asian and had Native American heritage, specifically Mayan, and had stated that publicly. It just takes a long time, sometimes, to untangle family trees in certain populations and among people from certain backgrounds.
