For everyone new just joining this long thread on Mary Anderson...I reposted 2 articles on April 18th, 2024 about the investigation and discovery of Mary in our Seattle hotel. One was posted by a journalist in our local paper; Carol Smith - The Cipher in Room 214, and the other by the late Todd Matthews from NAMUS - Something about Mary. Both of these articles will tell you what they found, where they looked and an in depth interview with the ME at the time who I also believe passed away recently. It was indeed a huge loss to lose Todd so early in his life last year -<modsnip: Removed link to a source that is not approved at Websleuths>

This case baffles me. How has no one noticed this woman is missing? Surely she had neighbours, work colleagues etc. What about her parents? She said she had no family so perhaps her parents passed away. But no siblings, cousins?

I think she immigrated to the US or Canada in the early 1990’s, from the Middle East. I don’t think many missing women in the Middle East are reported. However there was one DNA database that was mentioned that is based in the ME. Could her DNA be submitted there?

I’ve done searches for missing women with a current age of 65-75 on Interpol and The International Commission on Missing Persons with no hits for this woman.

An intriguing but very sad case. I hope one day she is identified.

One thing for sure I’m convinced - Mary Anderson was diabetic more likely type 2.

1. She had a copper IUD opposed to hormonal birth control. (The pill isn’t ideal for women with type 2 diabetes).

2. The crystal light. Very popular product for diabetics during the 90s.

3. Metamucil. Diabetics benefit from fibre & particularly have Metamucil or another fibre supplement like chia seeds in their pantry.

4. The kitchen bowl could be used for foot care which is very important for someone with diabetes.

5. Her belly bloat. While this could be from post mortem changes, it could also be belly weight contributing to a distended abdomin which is a tell tale sign of diabetes.

Maybe she came from another country and couldn’t afford medications in USA and maybe she lost her house so that’s why she ended her life, who knows really. But regardless this woman is highly likely to be diabetic. Not sure if that helps.

Your information pointing to ‘Mary’ possibly being diabetic has lead me back to a MP that I have looked at before. In reviewing my notes from this case, I feel that Barbara Rushton could be a candidate. Barbara happens to have been a diabetic who required insulin at the time she went missing in 1984 (from AL). There is huge weight difference between the two but at this point, over two years have passed.

Her daughter told investigators at that time prior to her disappearance that her mother wasn't behaving normally before she left for her card game - she had a blank stare and was upset and crying. I am wondering if she may have left on her own to escape her life at the time. Once investigators started digging deeper into her life situation, they discovered she had already resigned from her job.

A little over two years later, Mary is discovered in a hotel room in Seattle. This could be a little far out there but could also be a possibility.

‘Mary’ was reported to have brown eyes and Barbara reported to have blue eyes. However, decomposition can change the appearance of eye color to brown in just a matter of hours depending on the temperature. The eye color itself doesn’t change but the breakdown of the tissue does. Hazel, green or blue eyes can all appear brown after death.

Ultimately, ‘Mary’s’ true identity will only be discovered and confirmed with DNA or even dentals but take a look at Barbara and her case. Thoughts, comments? No way, never or possible?

Mary was found in 1996 so that’s a 12 year difference. Plenty of time for weight fluctuations especially with diabetes.

Thank you, Thank you. That was most likely why I left it alone. Time gap is way too much.

Unless she met someone in Birmingham Alabama at a military base where Canadian armed forces did drills or something and she ran away to Canada to be with someone and to get cheaper insulin. 12 years later things didn’t work out so she hopped the clipper ship from Vancouver island and ended up in Seattle with little to nothing. (Valour suits / comfortable clothes are at every ferry terminal gift shop) I’m from Vancouver island B.C. so I have some knowledge on how to get to Washington state it’s a short ferry ride away.

I think the other problem with Barbara is that there's nothing to indicate she was of Iranian/Afghan heritage like Mary was. Barbara appears to be a blonde haired, blue eyed white woman.

There was a woman who went missing in Philly a while back and she was ruled out from a Jane doe who was said to have European heritage particularly Switzerland, when they reluctantly tested the 2 it was a match. The missing woman had never been to Switzerland. You cant lend all credence to one small detail. Sure it can help but it’s not everything.

One can have DNA heritage without having ever traveled to that country. Mary's DNA showed she was of Iranian/Afghan heritage, but that doesn't mean that she had or hadn't ever been there.

There's a huge difference between someone being of European heritage but a different 'flavour' than expected (and they don't have to have ever been there) and someone who is a completely different ethnicity. Mary would have to be adopted for her to be 'known as' white European (if she never knew her heritage) to her friends and family but not by DNA. Maybe possible but quite unlikely.

I think you might be confusing isotopes with DNA. Isotopes are notoriously unreliable, where ethnicity established by DNA is very reliable.

It was reported that this Jane Doe never had children. Barbara had a daughter.
I believe this woman immigrated to the US from the Middle East.

Unidentified White Female

Located in Seattle, King County, Washington on October 11, 1996

Cause of death was suicide.

Vital Statistics
Estimated Age: 33 - 45 years old
Approximate Height and Weight: 5'8"; 240 lbs.
Distinguishing Characteristics: Reddish-brown hair and brown eyes. She used a copper intrauterine device. She had some sort of breast surgery at some point. It had produced scars beneath both breast and around the nipple area. Her hair was combed, her nails were painted cream white and she wore make-up.
Dentals: Dental plate
Clothing: She wore black leggings and a black top.

Case History
This woman committed suicide in Seattle, WA. She checked in to a room at Seattle's Hotel Vintage Park on October 9, 1996 under the name Mary Anderson. She paid cash for her room. She left an non-existent address of 132 East Third Street, New York, NY 11103; and a phone number of 212-569-5549; the phone number does not exist either. When she failed to check out of her room two days later as expected, hotel staff entered the room and found her deceased. She had taken cyanide.

Investigators found a note scribbled upon hotel stationery:

To Whom It May Concern.
I have decided to end my life and no one is responsible for my death.
Mary Anderson.
P. S. I have no relatives. You can use my body as you choose.

A large black Bible lay open across her chest. It was opened to the Twenty-Third Psalm.

The woman's miscellaneous belongings -- velour outfits, shoes, slippers, black leather gloves, leather purse, Estée Lauder cosmetics, toothpaste, perfume, Metamucil, Crystal Light, panty hose, a kitchen bowl, and an iron -- were packed in several luggage bags.

mary Anderson went to the seattle hotel to commit suicide with cyanide, why did she take 6 outfits and a iron, and hang them up in the wardrobe of hotel??? when she then commited suicide.

  • #956
I didn't think so myself about the cases connecting- I thought it was kind of a small coincidence, less of a connection
why would she take 6 outfits and a iron and hang them up in the wardrobe of her room, then lie down and take cyanide?????

Perhaps those were outfits she would want to buried in? Just a thought?

why take 6 why not one? if that was the case, she wasnt bothered about passing , do what you want with my body i have no family etc, so dont think that was it....also she would have dressed herself in one of her velour outfits before she took her cyanide but she dressed herself in black as it was fitting for what she had planned.

She might have been travelling and this was her last stop. Or she had left home and only taken those outfits because they were her preferred clothes. People who decide to end their lives can be very organised and put things in order once they have made their decision. Like the sisters in Aberdeen who recently took their own lives.

yes...but why hang them up , why not just leave them in the suitcase....also cyanide is a convulsing act horrible before you die, yet she was serene ? and no movement on the bed?
