Are those vans set up so there is decent lighting in the rear if you open the hatch?
Interesting point. . .I wonder if she is always a naturally smiley person or if this was out of character for her. My hubby and I were talking about it and he said he would know for sure something was up if it were me smiling like that on surveillance. It's just not my regular character.
FWIW One out of eight couples these days meet online. I wouldn't read too much into it.
She graduated in 2008 and was already working for several months if not close to a year.

No, she just recently graduated (or was getting ready to?). That post referred to her first semester grades. The one below posted September 2008 is titled '2nd day of college'.
Yes, its possible, but it seems more likely that he was self-diagnosing and thus trying to hurry her. And this would point toward other things going wrong, prior. "I may have cancer" has all too often been used to try and trap someone (at least in my kooky family : ( )

Thurston County detectives say they are following up on leads, including several tips, but they've called off an active search for Shantina Smiley.
snip
Azriel's body was found Thursday. An autopsy positively identified the boy, determined he had drowned and his death was an accident.
A wallet containing Smiley's driver's license, some cash and credit cards was found in the van. Two mismatched shoes, a partially full and corked wine bottle, an inhaler and an orange ball have washed ashore since, and police said the items apparently belonged to the boy or his mother.
According to police, there was no indication that a crime took place inside Smiley's 2005 Dodge Caravan.

For real! I am trying to work out the conversations here. Hello, granddad? I am lost and had an accident but I am ok. Did she say to call her steps to let them know that.......what? I'm coming but I'm going to be late when she knew she wasn't going there at all that night. I thought I read that RS was the one to call the grandparents. He didn't say he called back after they called him so apparantly until he called they didn't understand anything was wrong perhaps?
Interesting point. . .
Thanks - I need to stop looking at this stuff for a whileBut for some reason I thought that they did say she was working as a medical coder. Maybe started recently? I dunno.
That too fits with my own belief that she was avoiding a confrontation with RS (in that he wasn't supposed to be along on this visit). She knew he was minutes away from Castle Rock when they last spoke, and by that time he would have been at the step-father's house. There is also the step-sister who had been posting how eager she was to see SS and AC, yet around 7:15 made a comment about being sick of all the drama.
If she were a dear member of my family, I would be still be pleading for her safe return.
I would be hitting the local newspapers and TV so people won't forget.
I would do that until she is found.
I'm not sure either; I seem to remember RS and reports saying that she was either recently graduated or about to graduate, and had an upcoming interview for a great job.
Here is there entire route from what we know.
A 4:15 PM Silverdale, WA (Home)
B 7:50 PM Handy Pantry Market
C 8:02 PM Safeway gas station on Harrison - bought jug of wine
D 9:00 PM Martin Way Diner (ordered and paid for corn dog, left w/o it)
E 9:55 PM Gull Harbor Merchantile (knocked on door but it was closed)
F 10:10 PM Dennis Williams House (used phone - called fiance and then grandparents)
G 10:00 AM Jim Pribbenow's House- guy who found car on his beach
Found it.

"I arrived in Castle Rock around 7:40, and found her Step Fathers house. We started to get worried about 9:00pm, I began to check in with the WSP about accidents."

Smiley earned her certificate in medical billing and coding at Olympic College in 2009. She graduated on the deans list and reportedly got a job at the Kitsap Medical Group.
