That is great to know. I hope that Robb and his daughter, and other family members, will see this and take action. It might help bring them a bit of closure, which I know would not negate their grief, but might help just a little. Thanks for the info.

I'm pretty sure it has to be a blood relative of Shantina's that contacts TES. I'm thinking her grandparents are her next of kin IIRC.

I agree, it's a way to possibly get some answers. The not knowing for sure must be terribly hard.

And it could be a way to get some answers in a way that's not obvious. TES coordinates with LE, and it's my understanding that they don't search unless LE believes the person is deceased. IYKWIM.

I think the Smiths are her step-grandparents, neither are blood relatives. I'll have to find the 'family tree' someone posted early on. Perhaps her brother could contact TES?

Oh I forgot the grandparents could be steps. Her brother should be okay. I don't *think* it has to be next of kin, I just know it has to be family.

Based on comments to Shantina's grandmother - in regards to Shantina's mother's death, I believe Carolene is Shantina's biological grandmother.

Smiley, whose maiden name was Kanally, lived with her grandmother Carolene and her late husband Ron Edgell, in Castle Rock while growing up. She also came to live with the Smiths in Brinnon in 2008, Silas Smith said. (Her mother died that November.)

Tammy Lynn Wallingford Brown died Nov 25 2005 - was Shantina's mother and Carolenes daughter.

Smiley, whose grandparents owned Edgell Well Drilling, grew up in Castle Rock and graduated from Castle Rock High School in 1998. Her son, 8-year-old Azriel Carter, was born in Longview.

I was under the impression that DS is a blood relative of Shantina's. I believe "Dolly" remarried S.Smith after her former husband (Shantina's grandfather) passed away. Could Dolly be Carolene? Maybe Dolly and her former husband lived in Castle Rock, and now she lives in Brinnon with her current husband, Silas.

Why does it have to be a blood relative that calls TES?

Seems there'd still be a receipt. Unless she did pay separately with cash and they didn't know until the video surfaced that she was the one who purchased it. Did the police confirm that she actually carried the wine out of the store?

I think the info about it not being on the receipt came from a video - and later Lt. Mealy confirmed she did buy it.

"Thurston County Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Mealy confirmed Wednesday that Smiley had bought a bottle of wine at Handy Pantry in west Olympia on Saturday night, before she went missing. Sheriff’s Sgt. Cheryl Stines confirmed that Azriel uses an inhaler."

I wonder if this sort of thing could be used to find Shantina? How expensive it is, how appropriate to her case? Just wondering....

LAKE CUMBERLAND - After hours of driving the more than 2,000 miles to get here, Gene and Sandy Ralston got up Monday, loaded and set up special equipment, and within 6 minutes of beginning their search had found the body of Shane Pierce. Dozens of searchers had unsuccessfully hunted for the body of the 37-year-old Indiana man on numerous occasions since Pierce fell out of his boat at high speed on September 8.

The Ralstons, of Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue, came in at the Pierces' request to pick up the search for their son. Kentucky Fish & Wildlife Officer Tony Wright took them to the two spots in the lake where he found the boat and where witnesses said they saw Pierce flip out of the side of his boat the day before this year's Lake Cumberland Poker Run. Wright had recorded the GPS coordinates of the location during the first attempts to find him.

Respectfully snipped

Would the Puget Sound being affected by tides and currents of the ocean be a detriment to finding her unless she is trapped in netting or something and still in the bay?

I honestly thought it was just a mathematical equation, the tide, plus the currents plus her size (plus, minus, multiply and divided by whatever else) combined with the info about what effects the time frame involved with the human body - seemed to make sense, but I guess not so much.

I was upset by them not doing more searching initially, until I figured out how that many miles of ocean or beach would be next to impossible to search - they also don't know if she was washed out to sea, if she was - she literally could turn up anywhere or no where. Where would they begin?

Still, it is better than doing nothing and there is the possibility she is still in the sound - caught on something.

I thought when Mealy said it wasn't on the receipt they found - maybe they were looking at Az's receipt, instead of hers. He did pull out his wallet and appeared to pay for something himself when he got the bottle of water.

IDK about the "blood" relative - I would think any close relative would do, I mean Travis is her blood - up north, her bio dad is up north. Why not whatever relative she is closest to, like her GMa

I just had a completely mindless moment... I agree about Dolly and since the comments came from Silas I thought he was speaking of his wife Dolly - never thought about "Carolene" even tho I was typing it! let me look :crazy:

This video shows her buying the wine and putting her wallet in her pocket, her grabbing the bag and then the clerk hands her the receipt which she does not put in her pocket -- she taps Azriel on the head with it and they walk out.

This video shows her doing something in the front passenger seat, and it appears as if she tosses the receipt on the ground about 55 seconds into the video. Also, when she runs over that curb thing it almost looks as if there is something in her hand.

The account hasn't been deleted. It was accessed and set to private.

Then you have step-father's wife saying on SS and AC's group FB page (later that same day?) that they still think she's out there scared and not sure what to do.

What's going on?????

ETA: sorry, forgot FB link: http://www.facebook.com/shantina.smiley#!/group.php?gid=10150133110780096&ref=ts

That is very strange about SS myspace. All along the last log in was March 7. Also, saw the comments about the family thinking she may be out there and scared. More puzzling pieces to the puzzle. IMO

I know.

I have read through her page, and her friends, and their friends... could one of them be helping her hide out?

We know she bought the wine, and a similar bottle was found 1/2 empty.
She was due to have her case reviewed re: the DUI charge.
Azriel, somehow, ends up in the water and drowns.

Could she have panicked and ran?

Thanks for this video. She hit the front sidewalk curb there at Handy Pantry. I had not seen this one before.

When she hit the curb at the pump it was at Gull Harbor Mercantile.

So, she is not used to driving this vehicle, or she is a careless driver, or something else was wrong.
I have a feeling we will never know the answer.

The thing is...
If she panicked and ran, would she have a friend who'd hide her?

Very interesting comment by Candy. It would make sense to me since this is their belief why they did not attend her memorial. We need some answers.

I wonder if the LE also believes this and are not saying anything?

Although not a direct quote, here is the most recent info from LE (April 17). They believe Shantina also drowned, as Azriel did, and will try to recover her body for the family.

There are no new leads in the investigation of Shantina’s disappearance, but she, too, is believed to have drowned, according to Detective Sgt. Cheryl Stines of the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office will still try to recover Shantina’s body for the sake of the family, Stines said.

Most recent info from LE previous to this article indicated the same.

ETA: April 5 - Chief Criminal Deputy Jim Chamberlain
"It is unlikely they would all float to that spot," Chamberlain said. "Perhaps they walked down the beach and became trapped by the incoming tide, or they tried climbing the steep stairs and slipped, getting trapped in the water."

Maybe Dolly and her former husband lived in Castle Rock, and now she lives in Brinnon with her current husband, S.

Smiley, whose maiden name was Kanally, lived with her grandmother C and her late husband, RE, in Castle Rock while growing up. She also came to live with the Smiths in Brinnon in 2008, S. Smith said.

Here you go... I didn't think I boffed this one so badly, (I hate doing that to myself. I had read they are related.) I have no proof that D. and C. Smith are the same person but they are both listed as last name Smith and living in Brinnon. So we can surmise that they are or surmise they are not the same person. But tdn.com said C is the Gmother of SS.

In the CMA case TES had fielded calls from several concerned people but could do nothing until they received a call from the family - IIRC it was CA who placed the call.

Since SS and RS have been cohabiting for 2 years would he be considered her common-law husband ?
