Things to do in Missing Person Cases When There's No News:

- Go back through threads and collect what you think are the top ten important links in the case, make a list of them, and post them. These lists would be great for both those familiar with the case, as well as people new to the case.

- If there's no timeline for the case, create one and post it, or begin one that others could add to. Find the most recent timeline, update it, and post it. If an existing timeline doesn't need updating, check to see if it's been posted within the last three pages of the most recent thread, and if not, go ahead and post it again for people new to the case to read.

- Write up your own recap of the story of the case and post it. Great for people who are new to the case, plus you get to give a voice to the victim.

- Go back and collect the known facts of the case, along with their source links, and post them. If you don't have time to collect all of them, just do whatever you have time for, and ask for others to add to it.

- Write up your own theory of what happened in the case and post it. Great to get others thinking about and posting on the case, and bring attention to it.

- Find a picture of the victim that hasn't been posted for a while, and post it so there's always a face to put with the victim's name, reminding people that the victim is a real person.

- Research to see if there's an updated missing poster and post it or link to it so it can be printed and distributed.

- Add to this list of things to do and re-post it. Please send me your ideas too!

Just some ideas :)

Thanks!

Such a beautiful, beautiful woman.

Thanks for posting that, Amanda.

BeanE that was a great to do list thanks. It will help in all cases.

After the irratic path she took and where she ended up, I thought there would be so much more follow up searches or information. It always baffles me that a human can just disappear. Though I know eventually the human body finds a way to get discovered. At some point we'll have answers.

Per NickiStarship:
When Asked:"Did you see Kat before she and Az left for CR? Did she seem ok to you? Was she unusually upset or distant in the hours or days before she left?"

Yeah. I saw them that Friday before I went to my birth mother's house for the weekend. Azriel was hugging me and telling me he loved me as usual. And my mom told me to make sure I come home and that she loved me and she'd see me Sunday night.

No new information. Det. Mealy of TCSO : Now that Azriel’s body has been found, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office’s predominate theory - though not the only one - is that Shantina never got off the beach and wound up in the water, too. There have been no sightings and the bloodhounds didn’t pick up any scents away from the beach.

A memorial service for Azriel James Carver was held at the Brinnon Community Church. Pastor Bill Reid told those gathered; "Azriel, accomplished his mission, by touching lives from Buffalo - where his father Jay Carver lives - to Brinnon, where he often came to stay with his great-grandparents Silas and Dolly Smith - a brief life is not an incomplete one.”

Saturday April 17, 2010

On April 17, 2010 a memorial to honor the life of Shantina Smiley; a young woman who worked hard to overcome a difficult start in life - a young mother who had come so far in accomplishing just that.

Family and friends gathered to remember her as a young woman known for “that smile”. Including her daughter Nicky Simmons; who Shantina always inspired to reach for her dreams. “I’m never going to forget that smile,” Nicky said.

“She was a joy
, and she loved me and her grandfather,” said Shantina's grandmother Dolly Smith, “She loved Robb with all her heart. She love Azriel so much. She was a good mother to him.”

Shantina's co leader, Laura Brown, said she had “love - like a cloud surrounding her” and the scouts all testified to Shantina’s warm heart for kids in general.

Members of Cub Scout Pack 4544,
were present when the “Spirit of the Eagle” was awarded to Azriel,
by the Boy Scouts of America .

Detective Sgt. Cheryl Stines TCSO said there are no new leads in the disappearance of Shantina. The sheriff’s office will still try to recover her body for the sake of the family.

Is there any way to find out from LE if they are pursuing any leads or if this case is closed - pending Shantina's body turning up? How would one go about asking them? Anyone from the media care to give LE a call?

ETA: By the way, great job on the timeline LCoastMom!!

  • #493
Excellent timeline LCoastMom! I wish I could fit that into the album.

One thing though... the people that heard banging at their home, are CG and RG , Island View Dr, not Zangle Rd.

That is an interesting question. I have come to feel that the case is cold, and as the family does not want the lake searched, nothing can happen until (if/when) Shantina surfaces, which I pray will be soon. I have a feeling LE would not be too forthcoming about anything, but it sure would be worth a try...

  • #495
Actually I am rather surprised that we never saw more in depth witness reports from the people at the places they stopped that night. I would have thought the media would have have sought these people out by now. Of course LE could have asked them not to talk I suppose or I could have just missed them.

Their multiple stops that night leave me so baffled still.

SMK --- This did not happen on a lake - it happened in Puget Sound - impossible to search - it is huge. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puget_Sound

Cubby, the couple that heard banging on their house has been in the media, both print and video interviews.

So have the couple that owns the property, and the woman who found items on the beach.

This might be a dumb question...
Is the Puget Sound known for bodies being lost for a long time?
I know that searching it would be impossible due to the size and shoreline area. But if anything, this is the season people will be out more, boating and walking on the beaches and shores.

From luckyducky's link:
Its average depth is 205 feet (62 m) and its maximum depth, off Point Jefferson between Indianola and Kingston, is 930 feet (280 m).

Holy cow that is deep.

Yes, it is deep!

The currents in Puget Sound are rapid and lead directly to the Pacific Ocean. Her body could have passed out of the Sound in just a few weeks. But, it is possible with people boating and walking the beaches, that she might be found on one of the islands.

OK, I see. I just thought that since those marine biologists offer that sonar search for free, and have had so much luck, it might work. But yes, Puget Sound must be very difficult to search, I concede.....And if she went into the Pacific Ocean, then she will likely never surface.

FYI We had several big windstorms this spring and I hoped that her body would be washed ashore during one of them... I think now the ocean is probably where she is.
